China Zinc, Lead Smelters to Reduce Output by 10% (Update2)

By Li Xiaowei and Xiao Yu

July 14 (Bloomberg) -- China's smaller zinc and lead smelters will cut output by 10 percent to bolster prices and ease a power shortage in the world's largest producer of the metals ahead of next month's Beijing Olympics.

Henan Yuguang Gold and Lead Co. and 26 companies agreed to reduce production for three months through September, the Shanghai Nonferrous Metals Trade Association said today in a statement. Zhuzhou Smelter Group Co. and Huludao Zinc Industry Co., China's two biggest smelters, are among producers that aren't part of the accord.

The agreement adds to planned reductions of as much as 10 percent by China's biggest aluminum producers that helped send prices to a record last week. Zinc rallied for a fourth day in London, after slumping 26 percent this year to July 8, on concern the industry faces an oversupply.

``The big ones are still profitable and want to squeeze the smaller players out of the market,'' Le Yukun, a Shanghai-based analyst at BOC International Ltd., said today by phone.

There may be a global oversupply of 215,000 metric tons of zinc this year, the International Lead and Zinc Study Group said in April. Lead may have an excess of 26,000 tons, the group said.

Zinc for three month delivery jumped as much as $95 a ton, or 4.7 percent, to $2120 a ton in London. It traded at $2,050 a ton at 1:37 p.m. Singapore time. Zinc for September delivery gained in Shanghai by as much as 2.2 percent to 16,150 yuan ($2,364), and traded at 16,120 yuan at 12:17 p.m.

      Capacity Cuts

Sichuan Hongda Chemical Industry Co., China's third-biggest smelter by capacity, Hechi Nanfang Nonferrous Metals Co., Yunnan Haolong Industrial Group Co. and Hanzhong Bayi Zinc Industry Co., were among the producers who met on Saturday.

``We continue to see 2008 and 2009 as a challenging time for zinc producers, with rapid growth in global zinc mine production and slow growth in demand leaving both the concentrates and the metal markets in surplus,'' Macquarie Group Ltd. analysts said today in a report.

Sichuan Hongda fell as much as 4 percent to 13.90 yuan in Shanghai and traded at 14.29 yuan at 12:12 p.m. local time. Henan Yuguang declined as much as 1.8 percent to 15.60 and traded at 15.91 yuan.

The average operating capacity of the 28 largest zinc smelters in China dropped to 78 percent in May, from 83 percent a year ago, researcher CBI China Co. said last month.

China produced 3.7 million tons of zinc and 2.7 million tons of lead in 2007, according to China's National Bureau of Statistics.

Energy accounts for 25 percent to 30 percent of the cost of producing zinc, making it the second-most energy-intensive metal after aluminum, Merrill Lynch & Co. said.

China is grappling with its sixth year of power shortages caused by economic growth that averaged more than 10 percent annually in the past 5 years. Insufficient coal supplies forced the closure of 2.5 percent of the country's coal-fired power plants as of July 6, data from the State Grid Corp. of China showed last week.

      * Shanghai zinc up after some smelters agree production cut

      * Big China zinc smelters to meet; cuts not on agenda (Adds comments, updates prices to Shanghai midday)

      By Alfred Cang

SHANGHAI, July 14 (Reuters) - Shanghai zinc futures gained 2 percent on Monday after rising by their 4 percent daily limit in the last session, following a weekend agreement by small- and medium-sized Chinese smelters to cut production by 10 percent.

Shanghai's September contract <SZNU8>, the most active on the Shanghai Futures Exchange, rose 315 yuan to 16,120 yuan ($2,360) a tonne at the midday bell, while the LME metal <MZN3> eased $5 to $2,020 by 0333 GMT.

China's small- and medium-sized zinc smelters, accounting for about 30-40 percent of output in the world's top producer, agreed on Saturday to cut production immediately to lift local prices. [ID:nSP330457]

The deal came just two days after China's biggest aluminium smelters agreed to cut output by 5-10 percent to ease escalating electricity shortages that threaten to push the country into its worst summer power crisis since 2004.

The production cut will run from July to September, said industry sources, citing the agreement.

"Aluminium and zinc prices are heavily influenced by Chinese supply," said ANZ's senior commodities analyst Mark Pervan. "What happens in China will have a strong bearing on supply. Any curtailment news will have an impact on prices."

China's large zinc smelters plan to meet on Tuesday in Beijing, an industry association executive said on Monday.

The meeting, organised by the lead and zinc division of the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association, will discuss market conditions but the smelters had no specific plan to discuss output cuts, the division's director, Zhao Cuiqing, said. [ID:nSHA46822]

Shanghai September aluminium <SAFU8> fell 55 yuan, or 0.3 percent, to 19,695 yuan while LME aluminium <MAL3> retreated $3 to $3,315 after matching an all-time high of $3,380 a tonne on Friday.

Three-month lead <MPB3> was up $15 at $1,980 after reaching a five-week high at $2,080 in the previous session as falling stocks triggered fresh buying.

Shanghai copper <SCFU8> rose 220 yuan to 63,090 yuan ($9,238) a tonne, while LME copper <MCU3> rose $60 to $8,330.

The gap in prices between London and Shanghai copper futures widened to 3,476 yuan from 3,196 yuan on Friday, including Chinese value-added tax. The gap reached its widest ever at 6,719 yuan on July 3. silberinfo-Marktbericht: Zahlreiche Parallelen zu den 70ern
