Western Power has formally sought federal environmental approval to build a transmission line from the Muja power plant, near Collie, to Wellstead, east of Albany.
The line would connect Grange Resources' proposed Southdown magnetite mine to the electricity grid.
The $350 million line would pass through the shires of Collie, West Arthur, Kojonup, Broomehill-Tambellup, Gnowangerup and the City of Albany.
Western Power says its submission to the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities is a long-term option that will provide the future power needs of the Great Southern.

Grange mulling over funding options for A$2.5bn Southdown mine
KALGOORLIE (miningweekly.com) - Magnetite producer Grange Resources said on Tuesday that it was investigating a range of options to fund the development of its A$2.5-billion Southdown project, in Western Australia, with the aim of securing funding by the middle of next year.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Diggers & Dealers conference, Grange MD and CEO Russell Clark said that the funding options included an equity raising, and a possible divestment of a stake in either the Southdown project, or Grange’s Savage River project, in Tasmania.
Clark said that while no decisions had yet been taken regarding the equity raising, the company would seek to retain a controlling interest in both projects, and would only consider divesting of between 15% and 25%.
He noted that possible uptake partners for the divestment of a stake in either project would include steel mills.
“There is a lot of interest around the world for vertical integration of steel mills, and they have seen in recent years that they are paying an awful lot for material, and if they have the vertical integration, what they lose on the swings, they will be gaining on the roundabout,” Clark said.
However, he reiterated that with Grange being a producing magnetite producer, the company was likely in a better position to secure funding for its 70% stake in Southdown without selling off a stake in the project, than its nonproducing counterparts.
“It is something that we are looking at, but we haven’t formally started the process, but the logic is spread the love, reduce the risk, get some equity to help you pay and reduce the debt and equity that you need.”
The Southdown project currently has a resource of around 650-million tons, but this could be increased to one-billion tons, said Clark, as only half of the orebody was included in the current resource estimate.
A recent prefeasibility study found that the project could support a ten-million-ton-a-year operation, over a life-of-mine of 40 years. The definitive feasibility study was scheduled for completion during the first quarter of 2012.
