Scramble for East Africa’s black gold likely to hot up, say analysts

By CHRISTINE MUNGAI - Daily Nation
      Monday, March 26 2012 at 22:30

Last year, prospectors predicted that Kenya would be the next big thing in oil and gas, and they have been proved right.

Tullow Oil on Monday announced the discovery of a significant deposit of oil in Turkana County, a vindication of the $24 million (Sh1.97 billion) spent on the project.

The scramble for potentially lucrative acreage is expected to get hotter — the wider East African region has been the focus of oil exploration companies in recent years as leading international players rush to seal deals to secure them a cut in the fortune.

      More than deals

Last year saw at least 17 notable deals signed in East Africa including five corporate deals worth more than $250m, more than double the deals struck in 2010, which numbered eight.

Several other companies are prospecting for deposits in Kenya, including Tullow, Total, Africa Oil and BG, as well as the US-based firms Apache and Dominion.

Four wells are expected to be drilled this year in Kenya, two on land and two offshore.

Tullow is leading the charge onshore in applying knowledge gleaned from Uganda’s rift basins to Kenya’s Rift Valley and arid north, as the two countries could have a similar geological profile.

Apache is scheduled to drill the Mbawa prospect off the coast of Kilifi with its partners Tullow, Los Angeles-based Origin Oil and Australian company Pancontinental Oil and Gas.

“Tullow, in particular, is leading the charge to try to replicate the success it has had in the tertiary rift basin in Uganda,” said the latest report by investment analysts, Jeffries Group.

Four large 3D seismic surveys have been done in Kenya, covering nearly 6,000 square kilometres, both off the coastline and in the arid north.

Gas discoveries in deep waters of Indian Ocean have been made by mostly small to mid-sized firms.

Consultancy Africa Intelligence (CAI) said East Africa is experiencing growth in investment from foreign firms keen to profit from its potential due to portrayal of region as ‘new frontier’ of oil and gas opportunities.

“If it can surmount certain obstacles, East Africa could become a major global focus area for the oil and gas sector, with major consequences for the region,” said the South Africa-based research and strategy firm.

The analysts have a buoyant picture for the region’s nascent oil sector. Last year, Jeffries predicted that East Africa could produce 5,000 kilotonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) by 2030, as much as Australia will produce in 2020. Tullow’s latest discovery fuels the upbeat outlook.

The acceleration of licensing, assets and corporate deals, geophysical data acquisition, drilling plans and resource discovery have all exceeded our bullish expectations from this time last year,” says the report.

Tullow Oil has acquired significant stakes in the area around Lake Turkana, and has gone on to secure a 15-20 per cent stake in an area called Mbawa off the coast of Kilifi, where second deep-water well will be drilled in Kenya. (Anmerkung: PCL hält an Block L8 15%)

Another company extending its portfolio is Texas-based Anadarko, which has been the leading player in the region’s budding natural gas sector.

Anadarko will operate two rigs in this region through 2012. It also operates five blocks in deep-water Kenya, and the first well may be drilled by late this year or early 2013.

Analysts expect further consolidation of interests this year.

“We expect additional deals are likely in the region, in particular at the asset level as the acreage first-movers look to bring in better-funded partners to fund their exploration and bring exploration expertise [that] smaller companies may lack.”

"Chariot's drilling rig, Maersk Deliverer and support vessel, Olympic Commander, are due into Walvis Bay 04/04.

Commander is seen on this map (link below) rounding the bruntland heading into Ghana Bay off the Ivory Coast, where it will unite with the anchored rig Deliverer just east of Abidjan and proceed to Walvis Bay.

ECO's immediate future entirely lies in this exploratory activity by Chariot inasmuch as the results of the drill will be delivered before the 3D seismic on Eco's own acreage. Indeed, EOG IR has adivsed we watch Chariot's work very closely here.

Interestingly, the rig is contracted only to drill one vertical well, with no allotment for spurs, side drilling etc."
