The National Court is to study the legality of the Salamanca uranium mine

The court has admitted for consideration an appeal against the authorisation given by the Industry Ministry.

      Apr 28, 2016 - 12:44 PM
The Industry Ministry gave previous permission some months ago for the controversial project for the radioactive installation in a fabrication and residues plant, which two ecologist groups have appealed. The mining company concerned is named Berkeley and the location is in an unpopulated area close to the Portuguese border, and intends to open the only open sky uranium mine in Spain.

The partial concession conceded to Berkeley last September, which the Australian company wants to quarry the uranium mineral, treat it inside the installation to be constructed a few metres from the mine between the small hamlets of Retortillo and Villavieja de Yeltes (Salamanca). The last Spanish plant to fabricate concentrations of uranium closed in 2003.

The project is controversial, not only for the environmental impact, but for the participation of Manuel Lamela, former deputy to the former Agriculture Minister, Miguel Arias Cañete. Lamela has assessed Berkeley before the European Commission, which in May 2015 emitted their acceptance. Their ruling document is titled ‘It seems’ which is not legally binding, and that would come with the signature from Arias Cañete.

Lamela registered in the community registry of lobbyers in December 2014. It seems positive that the Commission has granted, but the text lacks substantial information, (such as the investment) and has been declared secret, according to a spokesman, the company has not allowed it to be published: Berkeley deny it, and assured there is no secrecy.

The National Court has already required the Industry Ministry to send the administrative files for the project and to notify the company about this legal challenge as the person demanded, according to the decree of admission signed April 22, to which El País has gained access.

As the Berkeley project for a radioactive installation is of the first category, its transaction will follow the same steps as any new nuclear plant. For now, it only has previous authorisation from Industry, which has been appealed by Equo and Ecologists in Action España.

‘We are going to argue that the declaration of no environmental impact which ruled the Junta de Castilla y León, because such an evaluation project is a matter of State which must rule’, explained the lawyer representing both groups, Manuel Serrano.

‘We will also alleged as the site is close to the Portuguese border, our neighbouring country must be consulted’, he added. ‘With this admissibility we will achieve that Berkeley has no rights and hope that a new Government can rectify’ singled Serrano.

Several Spanish euro MPS have asked the European Commission about this project, given its closeness to areas of outstanding national beauty and the role of the now European Commissioner Arias Cañete.

      What we own
"The Group has a 1% life of mine NSR royalty on the Salamanca uranium project located in Spain and operated by ASX-listed Berkeley Energia Limited (‘Berkeley’). The project consists of four main deposits (Retortillo, Alameda, Zona 7 and Gambuta) and is located in Salamanca Province, Spain, approximately 250km west of Madrid."

      Performance
On July 20, 2015, Berkeley announced that the Nuclear Safety Council had issued a favourable report for the grant of the Initial Authorisation of the proposed process plant to be built on Retortillo, as a radioactive facility, the first in a 3-step process required to authorise the plant for operation.

On October 21, 2015, Berkeley announced the receipt of all the European Union, National, Regional and Provincial level approvals required for the initial infrastructure development of the Salamanca project. These represent major milestones in advancing the project towards first production, with the Environmental License and Mining License already granted at the Retortillo deposit.

On October 7, 2015, Berkeley announced that following an infill drill program at Zona 7, the mineral resource estimate for Zona 7 was updated for an increase in resource grade, an increase in resource pounds and the upgrade of almost 90% of the Inferred Resource to the Indicated category.

On November 4, 2015, Berkeley announced an updated pre-feasibility study (‘PFS’) on the Salamanca project that now includes the updated Zona 7 deposit. Its inclusion in the updates PFS has increased the mine life from 11 to 18 years and reduced operating costs from US$24.60 to US$15.60 per pound of uranium produced during steady state operations, which should make it amongst the lowest cost producers in the world, once developed.

During 2016, Berkeley expects to conduct additional exploration drilling at Salamanca to test a number of drill targets located within the 100km of the approved processing facility and where historical drilling has intersected high grades of uranium without being fully advanced.

Protest in Madrid against Salamanca uranium mine project
About thirty people from the project area have demonstrated Thursday (May 5) in Madrid against the opening of the uranium mine planned by Berkeley in the towns of Retortillo and Villavieja de Yeltes. The protest coincided with the presentation of Berkeley's mining project at the School of Mining Engineers in Madrid. The Stop Uranium platform called for the stoppage of the only project in Europe to establish a uranium mine. (Las Arribes al día, May 6, 2016)

Sollte also passen.
Denke in wenigen Tagen sollte die 60 cent Marke fallen.

Wenn die dann erst einmal irgendetwas erreichen..haben wir ein richtiges Problem...
