Singapore-based B2C and C2C consumer marketplace for buying and selling new and used goods in Singapore Carousell, has struck an investment deal with a consortium led by South Korean internet giant Naver as announced by the startup in a statement dated September 15, 2020.Following the deal, Carousell will be valued at over US$900 million which will inch the startup to a unicorn status. This is an elevation over the US$850 million valuation the startup achieved in November 2019, after it merged with rival 701Search, then a unit of Telenor.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought a lot of uncertainties in many industries. While losses are countless and impactful, the wins though not as many have also provided a ray of hope amid gloomy business forecasts. However, the first half of 2020 brought a new set of experiences for the Rakuten Viber team, but also a new set of milestones, said a press release.Compared to the 2019 data, Viber has recorded an increase of usage in Bangladesh during the first half of 2020, with a 17% increase in activations, a 21% increase in sending group messages, and 25% in one to one message. The number of messages sent in a group experienced robust growth as well, with a 48% rise, while community Views increased to 77%.
Similarly, the rest of the region experience accelerated activity, especially when it comes to communicating within Groups and Communities. Countries in the Asia-Pacific saw strong growth in the number of messages sent within Viber groups compared to 2019—Myanmar at 41%, Nepal at 67%, Sri Lanka at 91%, Vietnam at 43% and Philippines at 95%. Community Engagement similarly grew, with most countries almost doubling their numbers of Community Views, Myanmar at 106% growth, Sri Lanka at 118%, and Nepal at 195%, respectively. In the Philippines, Community engagement experienced robust growth as well, with a 2.5x increase in community viewers and 2.7x growth in messages sent within Communities.

Japanese telco Rakuten Mobile bets big on India with services, equipment
September 21, 2020Rakuten Mobile appears to be making a much bigger bet on India in the field of IT services and telecom hardware for both its telecom network in Japan and Rakuten Communications Platform (RCP).
Rakuten’s chief technology officer Tareq Amin said that the company wants to make India a “hub for engineering” and it will be working towards growing enabling the IT and telecom ecosystems.
“If it grows, then I have another supply chain that I can go to and we feel comfortable about,” Amin was quoted as saying by the Economic Times. “I am personally motivated quite a bit to make India a hub for a lot of the engineering we do.”
The senior executive told the publication that it is going to enter into big partnerships with Indian IT companies and system integrators for its RCP.
The company is already working with IT services company Tech Mahindra and telecom equipment maker Sterlite Technologies Limited in India. While Tech Mahindra is helping Rakuten with its RCP, Sterlite is providing it with Wi-Fi 6 hardware.
“We have a great story in the making of collaboration between Rakuten and the right Indian partners that are really willing and one team to embrace and build indigenous technology in India and create a win-win model for us as Rakuten then and for future business partners in India,” he told the publication.

Still Rakuten has two profitable segments which are delivering significant growth and its marketplace services is not restricted to Japan only as it also covers the US and continental Europe together with East Asia.
