"Looking Ahead to the Week of June 12
The preliminary consensus shows retail sales are expected to inch up 0.1 percent in May, slower than the 0.6 percent gain posted in April. Retail sales excluding the auto group should rise 0.3 percent, also less than the previous month when nonauto retail sales grew 0.5 percent.
Initial estimates show that economists are predicting the Consumer Price Index (CPI) will rise 0.2 percent in May, higher than April’s unchanged figure. Excluding food and energy prices, the CPI is also expected to increase 0.2 percent, the same as last month.
Economists are predicting the Index of industrial production will decrease 0.5 percent in May, reversing about half of the previous month’s gain. This is based on the drop in hours-worked in manufacturing as indicated by the employment situation. As a consequence, the capacity utilization rate should edge back down to 81.5 percent after surpassing the 82 percent level last month".

http://cnnfn.com/2000/06/09/technology/microsoft/
Textauszüge hiervon:
"The US Justice Department wants to have the Microsoft case appealed directly to the Supreme Court, rather than to the Court of Appeals, since that would speed the process. Microsoft, by contrast, wants to try its hand with the Court of Appeals first, because that court has been favorable to Microsoft in a separate case involving the government.
"We think we are going to win whichever place we go, but with the huge record this case contains and the huge number of procedural, factual, and legal errors committed, we think the appeals court would be a more appropriate venue for the first phase," Cullinan said.
To move the case directly to the Supreme Court, the U.S. Solicitor General has to ask Judge Jackson to sign a petition to bypass the appeals court. The Solicitor General`s Office is a fairly obscure part of the Justice Department that supervises and conducts government litigation in the Supreme Court. The federal government is involved in about two-thirds of all the cases the Supreme Court decides on the merits each year.
The current Solicitor General, Seth Waxman, was nominated by President Clinton in September 1997. The previously obscure Waxman is likely to have a moment in the spotlight later this month.
However, the Supreme Court is likely to reject any effort by the Justice Department to bypass the appeals court, antitrust lawyers said. The high court prefers to review the slimmed down legal record that appeals courts create, rather than wading through long, complicated lower-court trial records".

Ich will nun ein neues Netzwerk-Unternehmen vorstellen:
Foundry Networks
Thread: Juniper Networks vs. Cisco Systems
Und hier die obenerwähnte Studie:
http://biz.yahoo.com/ii/000609/industry_000609.html
"Foundry Networks (NASDAQ: FDRY)
After a sizzling 1999 debut propelled its stock from $25 to $212, Foundry Networks` shares have pulled back sharply in recent months. The company`s valuation took a $17 billion haircut, but now the stock looks attractive.
Foundry makes networking and Internet access equipment. Competing with the likes of Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO) is not an easy task, but Foundry is more than holding its own. After all, Foundry Networks is the fastest-growing Internet equipment company around.
First quarter sales shot up 355% to $70 million. Per share profits grew at an even faster clip thanks to tight cost controls and a limited head count in its sales force.
Foundry is a prime beneficiary of the Internet`s explosive growth. Thanks to surging demand, Internet service providers (ISPs) need to buy more switches and routers to handle Internet traffic. ISPs make up 65% of Foundry`s sales. In contrast, most competitors see the bulk of their sales go to corporations that are looking to beef up their own Web presence.
That emphasis helps position Foundry for strong growth in the quarters to come as well. According to a recent study by the Synergy Research Group, the ISP market grew four times faster than the corporate market in 1999. That trend is expected to continue through this year and next, when the ISP market for switches and routers is expected to reach $28.9 billion, passing the projected $26.9 billion take of the corporate market.
Foundry`s white-hot growth looks sustainable as the company has just started shipping a new line of higher-profit routers. The Tolly Group, an industry analysis group, says Foundry`s gear is the fastest in the business.
And thanks to the recent market rebound, shares of Foundry have surged ahead in recent days from a low of $51.88 to around $92.27. That`s still well below its high of $212 just three months ago. Look for shares of Foundry to rocket higher if tech stocks can maintain their current momentum".

"June 13th,
Tuesday 8:30 AM ET Retail Sales
Tuesday 8:30 AM ET Retail Sales Less Autos
The RETAIL SALES number shows how much we have been out spending on consumer goods in the last month. It will be interesting to know if sales have remained subdued during the past month. The Street is currently looking for 0.0%. This would still demonstrate that the US economy is slowing.
The RETAIL SALES LESS AUTOS number shows how much we have been out spending on consumer goods in the last month after deducting the volatile automobile sector. The Street is currently looking for 0.4%".

http://www.federalreserve.gov/BoardDocs/speeches/2000/200006…
Textauszug:
"In summary then, most of the gains in the level and the growth rate of productivity in the United States since 1995 appear to have been structural, largely driven by irreversible advances in technology and its application--irreversible in the sense that knowledge once gained is almost never lost. Having learned to employ bar code and satellite technologies, for example, we are not about to lose our capability in applying them.
To be sure, some of the increase in output per hour may well reflect cyclical rather than structural changes. Output can be stretched beyond sustainable capacity for a time, raising measured output per hour. And, on the other side, a cyclical slowing in demand is not usually matched by a prompt scaling back of employment, resulting in a temporary decline in output per hour or, at best, a significant slowing in its growth rate.
But cutting through the inevitable cyclical fluctuation of measured output per hour, the evidence of a decided improvement in the growth rate of structural productivity from the macro data has continued to strengthen. And, an examination of the micro level evidence is even more compelling. Disaggregative probings of the productivity data, as well as direct observation of the performance of U.S. businesses lend considerable credibility to the notion that our economy is benefiting from structural gains in productivity that have been driven by a remarkable wave of technological innovation".

"Week of June 12
Wednesday 8:30 AM ET Consumer Price Index (CPI)
Wednesday 8:30 AM ET CPI less Food & Energy
The CONSUMER PRICE INDEX is broken down into two parts: the "headline" number is the overall Consumer Price Index which can be fairly volatile, and the Consumer Price Index less food and energy, the core CPI. These numbers are very similar to the Producer Price Index, however from a consumer`s standpoint as opposed to a producer`s standpoint. The CPI is also the number that the government uses to index inflation-linked payments so it is closely watched. The Street is expecting 0.2% for the headline and 0.2% for the core number. However, if the numbers are lower than this (better) then the bond and stock markets should do fairly well as a reading of 0.2% is not particularly inflationary and will continue to confirm the benign data we have seen for the month of May".

"HaG",
"DoubleClick, Inc. provides comprehensive Internet advertising solutions for advertisers and Web publishers worldwide. Currently, the Company has two principal service offerings, the DoubleClick Network and DART Service. The DoubleClick Network consists of highly trafficked Web sites grouped together by DoubleClick in defined categories of interest. In 1998, the Company introduced DoubleClick Local, a Web advertising solution developed for businesses that want to reach users in specific geographic regions. In addition, the Company provides DoubleClick Direct, a response-oriented Web solution for direct marketers looking to reach users on a cost-per-action pricing model. DoubleClick`s DART Service provides Web publishers, advertisers and ad agencies with the ability to control the targeting, delivery, measurement and analysis of their online marketing campaigns on a real-time basis by dynamically targeting and delivering ads to Web users based on pre-selected criteria".

"Today`s CPI data effectively gives the markets a green light to rally now that the Fed is almost certain to be sidelined at their June 27-28 FOMC meeting. The Fed simply has no case for raising interest rates with the economy showing clear signs of deceleration and recent inflation data well-behaved," said Tony Crescenzi, chief bond market strategist at Miller, Tabak & Co.
"The markets can now put aside its Fed fears until the next stream of data begins to hint at the likely outcome of the August 22 meeting. The market is expressing this relief by further trimming its probability for a June rate hike to just 28 percent, the low point for the move," Crescenzi added.
The stock market has been unable to garner momentum from tame economic data following the magnificent rally on the heels of a mild employment report almost two weeks ago.
"Wednesday`s economic news was pleasing but there`s still the question mark of the impact that energy prices will have on next month`s numbers," said Peter Cardillo, chief strategist at Westfalia Investments.
"The pieces of the puzzle are falling into place but there`s hesitation out there as investors are trying to figure out how much the economy will slow," Cardillo added".
WKN: 916529)
http://quote.yahoo.com/q?s=ebay&d=t
"eBay, Inc. offers a person-to-person Internet trading community. The Company pioneered online person-to-person trading by developing a Web-based community in which buyers and sellers are brought together in an auction format to trade personal items. The eBay service permits sellers to list items for sale, buyers to bid on items of interest, and all eBay users to browse through listed items in a fully automated, topically arranged service that is available online around the clock. The eBay community includes more than two million registered users, who use eBay as a place to socialize, discuss topics of common interest and ultimately to conduct business in an online trading environment. Through eBay, individuals can buy and sell items in more than 1,000 categories including collectibles, antiques, sports memorabilia, computers, toys, beanie babies, dolls, figures, coins, stamps, books, magazines, music, pottery, glass, photography, electronics, jewelry and gemstones".

Ein etwas negativer Bericht über Qualcomm:
http://quote.bloomberg.com/fgcgi.cgi?s=AOUfnWxUBUXVhbGNv&T=m…
Textauszug (ganz am Ende):
"South Korea, the biggest market for Qualcomm chips, is considering adopting W-CDMA as the next national cell-phone standard instead of CDMA2000".

a) Earnings-driven ups and downs
b) Market-driven ups and downs
c) Economy-driven ups and downs
"Week of June 12
Thursday 10:00 AM ET Philadelphia Fed
The PHILADELPHIA FED gives an indication of how the economy is doing in the Mid-Atlantic States. This gives insight into how the local economy is doing and how well inflation is behaving in the area. This is not a major number, however any large moves in this number can affect the bond and equity markets. We should watch to see if the number gives a similar reading to the NAPM and Chicago survey from last month. This is the first regional survey for the month of June. The Street is looking for a drop to 13.0, which would show that the manufacturing economy is continuing to slowdown".

"The market`s slow grind this week denotes a continued lack of willingness to step up to the plate. Market participants continue to ponder just how big an effect the Fed`s six rate hikes since June 1999 will have on earnings growth going forward.
The market is still stuck in neutral and can`t find the clutch. Economic numbers that were better and worse than normal came out this week and caused some half-hour reactions, but not enough to move the market into any kind of trend," said Robert Dickey, chief technical analyst at Dain Rauscher Wessels.
The market may need the FED meeting or second-quarter earnings as a catalyst to get things going again, Dickey said".

"Ed Snyder`s target for QCOM was 110 USD in January when his 2000 EPS estimate was $0.97. Now, his target is 50 USD, while his 2000 number is $1.07 !"
Hier die Quellenangabe (vom Januar 2000)
"Chase H&Q issued a Daily Notes Report on January 26, 2000 for QUALCOMM Inc..
On January 26, 2000 Chase H&Q analyst Ed Snyder issued a 6 page Daily Notes Report on QUALCOMM Inc. Report highlights: `The fiscal 2000 EPS estimate was lowered to $0.96 from $0.97 to reflect weak demand. A MARKET PERFORM rating was reiterated with a price target of 110 USD".
Und hier seine gestrige Herunterstufung (Juni 2000):
"Ed Snyder lowered his fiscal 2000 earnings estimate to $1.07 per share from $1.11 and his fiscal 2001 forecast to $1.27 from $1.49. He put a 50 USD 12-month price target on Qualcomm (QCOM)".
Also:

"I hope I`ve arrived before it`s too late
To save you longs from a terrible fate
I`ve studied my charts and the "charts don`t lie"
They say the stock is bound to die.
The upper helical subtend infuser
indicates this stock`s a "looser"
Everyone should listen to me.
Sell now, buy back at thirty three.
Opps, I`m having a DD attack
I`ll start my research at the back
at the place where they keep old boilerplate.
I`ll hint that management isn`t great.
I must point out:" I`m never wrong".
"The company`s great." "I will go long."
"My investment advice is consistantly great."
"I`m up six jillion year to date."
Oh no Oh no, you longs aren`t selling
now I`ll have to stay up yelling.
Fearful post on a Friday night.
Black Monday coming. Scream with fright.
Snyder Snyder manipulation
Qualcomm capitulation...."

Hallo "Wahrheit",
Ansonsten weiter so.

"Week of June 19
Tuesday 8:30 AM ET Trade Balance
The US TRADE BALANCE shows what the net amount of trade is going into and out of the US. A negative number, which it has been for quite some time, means that the US is importing more goods than it is exporting. This trade deficit needs to be funded by non-US investors investing in US assets. There is some worry that if the trade deficit continues to grow and US asset markets falter, it will become harder for the US to fund this deficit as non-US investors would not want US assets. This event could also lead to weakness in the US Dollar which then in turn undermines the US asset markets. The market, especially the bond market, will watch the US trade balance number. Expect a larger deficit number this month as the US economy continues to suck in imports. It should have little impact unless it is much larger than last time".

"NEW YORK -- Heated buying interest in chip, biotech and bank stocks helped the major averages score meaty gains. The Nasdaq led the charge, closing at its highest level since April 11.
"We`ve breached some key levels. What`s important now is follow-through," said Bryan Piskorowski, market analyst at Prudential Securities.
"The light volume suggests there`s still no large-scale buying and not a lot of conviction," Piskorowski said. However, he continued, the market`s also in the earnings pre-announcement period, trying to avoid landmines as it gears up for second-quarter results".

Hi,

Also:

P.S. Microsoft hält heute eine große Analystenkonferenz:

Hi Die_Wahrheit,

"The Best Pickers in the Pack
By Edith Yates
6/22/00 3:19 PM ET
Among the best, there`s always that subset of the very very best.
We`ve identified that superb group - the creme de la creme -- of the analysts who scored best in stock picking in our Analyst Rankings -- Equity 2000 survey.
Using data provided by I/B/E/S International, we scored analysts on their stock recommendations for the 12-month period ended Feb. 15, 2000.
Of the 63 analysts who topped their peers, five absolutely blew away the competition. Their performances were far, far better than those of the second-ranked stock pickers in their industry categories. Here, we talk to those five hot hands about what they look for in a stock, and what they`re liking right now.
How do they do it? Well, one thing these analysts have in common is that they tend to support the stocks of companies for which their firms have done underwriting and other investment-banking work. While those links are often regarded as a recipe for conflict, for these stock pickers the familiarity with their client firms seems to have provided more stock-picking insight. (For more on the conflicts analysts face, please see our related story on the state of the analyst industry.) Here, then, the winners:
Tim Dolan
Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown, Systems Software
Dolan, 26, covers "customer relationship management" and e-business applications. He joined Alex. Brown in 1996, having done investment banking and equities research with the First Albany-META Research team. Dolan received his B.S. in accounting and investments from Babson College.
What He Looks for
Dolan looks to fundamentals more than valuation when it comes to picking hot stocks. "What generally moves stocks over the longer term is beating estimates and having estimates get raised," he says. He looks for potential multibillion-dollar market opportunities that are still wide open, where multiple vendors can enjoy hyper-growth that doesn`t have to come at the expense of rivals.
"Many of the vendors I follow are growing at 100% to 500% a year, which makes management execution extremely key," Dolan said in an email. "I look for companies that are able to attract and retain management personnel that have experience building large, rapidly growing software companies. A differentiated product with a sustainable technology or functionality lead over competitors is important, but it is often sales and marketing execution that leads to the ultimate winners in the enterprise software markets rather than simply the company with the best product."
What He Likes Now
Dolan currently covers nine companies. Dolan`s top picks among "traditional" software companies making the move into the e-business market include Siebel Systems(SEBL:Nasdaq), Peregrine Systems (PRGN) and Xchange (EXAP). (Alex. Brown has done investment banking work for Peregrine and Xchange.) With respect to "pure plays" in the e-business applications market, top picks include Vignette Corporation (VIGN) and Eprise (EPRS). (Alex. Brown was the lead manager for Eprise`s private placement and recent IPO.)
Like his top stock-picking peers, Dolan doesn`t see the investment banking link with his top stock picks as a negative. "Deutsche Banc Alex. Brown has always been considered to have a top-notch franchise in the enterprise software space, going back to our firm`s relationship with Microsoft (MSFT), Oracle (ORCL) and Computer Associates (CA).
"Our firm tries to pick the industry sectors where we believe there will be tremendous growth for an extended period of time, and then we focus on picking the top companies within each of those market segments to develop long-term investment banking relationships," Dolan said in the email.
"In certain circumstances, I will pick up research coverage of noninvestment-banking clients that I consider critical to my research franchise. However, the end goal is that these companies would eventually become investment banking clients if I am able to become a top voice on their stock. The bottom line is that our firm wants to be associated with the best vendors in the software industry."
James Henry
Bear Stearns, Alternative Carriers
Henry, 28, covers competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) and Internet service providers (ISPs). Henry joined Bear Stearns in 1997, after working as a research associate at Alex. Brown. He received his B.A. in psychology from Connecticut College.
What He Looks for
Henry considers five areas crucial when evaluating a company. In order of importance, they are:
Management team: "The single most important thing," he says.
Equity (venture capital) sponsorship: "They don`t bring just capital. They bring critical experience, expertise and stewardship," he says.
Strategic relationships
Access to capital: "Capital is the lifeblood of this industry."
Results: financial and operational -- revenue growth, quality of revenue, margins, underlying profitability over time.
What He Likes Now
Henry`s top picks among CLECs are Covad Communications Group (COVD), Intermedia Communications (ICIX), and MGC Communications (MPWR).
On the ISP side, which includes Web hosting, he likes Digex (DIGX), Data Return (DRTN) and PSINet (PSIX).
Bear Stearns has done investment banking work for all six companies. But Henry insists that doesn`t taint his picks. To the contrary, he sees research as a driver of what business the investment banking arm picks up.
"Of the 30 companies that I cover, we have banking relationships with the vast majority," he says. "The Bear Stearns research franchise is well recognized, and has attracted a lot of companies that want to do business with us. You will find that we have a disproportionate number of `buy` ratings."
"It`s really a sector bet, an industry bet. We will not take a piece of any sort of corporate finance business if research is not supportive. For every deal we do that you hear about, there are 10-plus that we don`t do."
David Hilal
Friedman, Billings, Ramsey, Internet Software and Services
Hilal, 29, specializes in Internet "enabling technology." Prior to joining Friedman Billings in 1997, Hilal was a manager at American Management Systems (AMSY), a global information technology consulting firm. Hilal received both his M.B.A. in finance and his B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Notre Dame.
What He Looks for
Hilal takes a top-down approach when evaluating companies. The most important criteria he considers are:
Market size and market growth: Is the market saturated or still in its infancy?
Technology: "I view that as the barrier to entry. Companies that have their own intellectual property tend to do better competitively."
Differentiation: He looks for unique relationships with OEMs, or partnerships, not what he calls "Barney" relationships, the "I love you, you love me" deals.
Management: "Management must be able to change the direction of the ship. You can`t put it on autopilot."
Business and revenue models: "If they`re not making money today, do they have a revenue model where they can?"
What He Likes Now
Hilal currently covers nine stocks. His top two picks are Inktomi (INKT) and Ariba (ARBA). Hilal says the two companies both have a dominant position in their space and attractive revenue and business models. Another favorite of Hilal`s is WebMethods (WEBM). Though not yet cash-flow positive, WebMethods has a recurring revenue model that Hilal likes. (Friedman Billings had a venture capital investment in WebMethods and also underwrote the company`s IPO.)
"My relationship with public companies is solely research," says Hilal, explaining that he isn`t part of investment banking decisions involving public companies. (The firm has investment-banking relationships with three of the companies that Hilal covers.) Still, as a limited partner in Friedman Billings` venture capital investment division, Hilal does participate in decisions regarding investments in private companies, like the investment in WebMethods.
Jeffrey Lipton
Chase H&Q, Semiconductors
Lipton, 34, covers broadband components, including optical networking, and communications chips for Chase H&Q. Lipton joined Hambrech & Quist in 1996 after having worked as a management consultant at A.T. Kearney. He received a B.S. and an M.S. from Lehigh University and an M.B.A. from Univeristy of California -- Los Angeles` Anderson Graduate School of Management. He is a registered professional engineer and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
What He Looks for
Lipton has a long list of criteria that he uses to evaluate a business, including:
Long-term fundamentals
Quality of management team
Quality and defensibility of intellectual property: "Especially in optics, intellectual property is important."
General ability to focus, execute and manufacture
Quality of acquisitions and the ability to digest acquisitions, in an industry that is very acquisitive
Level of innovation
What He Likes Now
Lipton currently covers 12 stocks. His two favorite picks are SDLI (SDLI) and PMC Sierra (PMCS). He cites their fundamentals and potential upside in the models.
Lipton also likes Broadcom (BRCM), JDS Uniphase (JDSU) and New Focus (NUFO). (Chase H&Q has done investment banking for SDLI, PMC Sierra, Broadcom and New Focus, and for two companies that JDS Uniphase acquired.)
"Banking relationships are often viewed as a negative, but I view that as a positive. You get to learn about the company, and establish strong relationships with the management team. Our banking and research team sits down and we decide which deals we do," he says.
Daren Marhula
U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray, Health Care Distributors and Services
Marhula, in his late 20s, covers information-driven health care, software and Internet services to the health care industry for Piper Jaffray, which he joined from Wessels, Arnold and Henderson. He received his B.A. from the University of St. Thomas, where he double-majored in accounting and finance.
What He Looks for
Marhula cites four crucial qualities he considers when sizing up a company. They are, in order of importance:
Solid business model that contains some sort of value proposition for the industry
Management team
Proof of concept: Does their product work?
Distribution strategy that shows how they`re going to get their product to their customers
What He Likes Now
Marhula covers 11 stocks. His four favorites are Cerner(CERN:Nasdaq), Data Critical (DCCA), Medical Logic (MDLI) and Allscripts (MDRX). (Piper Jaffray has done underwriting for two of the companies that Marhula covers: Data Critical and Medical Logic.)".

"kammler",

(MU) sehr gute Quartalszahlen vorgelegt)...
