U.S. Options-MedImmune calls active after buy rating
CHICAGO, June 15 (Reuters) - Calls turned active on Thursday in options on MedImmune Inc. (NasdaqNM:MEDI - news) after a bank started the biotechnology firm with a buy rating.
At 11:25 a.m. CDT (1625 GMT), roughly 6,790 calls and 625 puts in the June-December 56.625-80 strikes had changed hands on the American Stock Exchange, the Chicago Board Options Exchange and the Pacific Exchange combined.
That compared with overall average daily volume during the last 20 trading sessions of about 2,055 contracts. During that period, daily turnover ranged from a peak of 7,941 contracts on June 6 to a low of 253 on June 12, according to Track Data.
``It`s no great secret here. It`s associated with the (rating),`` said a floor source at the AMEX of the increased activity. ``It`s not an individual. It`s widespread ... (and) mostly call buying`` by customers.
Bank of America said on Thursday that it started MedImmune with a buy rating and a $77 target. In addition to MedImmune, the bank started six other biotech companies on Thursday.
The call purchases helped implied volatility stay firm, with the July 65s standing at about 70 percent compared with 68 percent quoted on Wednesday.
``Vols ticked up a little bit, but nothing outrageous,`` added the AMEX source.
The stock`s one-month historical volatility was about 76 percent.
Busiest late Thursday morning were the December 70 calls, which were flat at 11 at the AMEX on volume of 2,552 and open interest of 58. The July 65 calls rose 3/4 to 6-1/2 on volume of 1,601 and open interest of 1,746.
The shares of Maryland-based MedImmune were down 7/16 at 64-3/16 after backing off from an intraday high at 69. Nasdaq volume in the stock exceeded 5 million shares.
