U.S. stocks rally on Greenspan`s productivity views
(UPDATE: Updates to late morning)
By Ian Simpson
NEW YORK, July 11 (Reuters) - Wall Street rallied in late morning trading on Tuesday, cheered by Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan`s view that there was little sign strong U.S. productivity growth was slowing.
With little other news to focus on, investors took their cue from the central bank chief`s comments on the surge in productivity.
The blue-chip Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI - news) was up 107 points, or 1 percent, at 10,753.
The technology-packed Nasdaq (^IXIC - news) rose 43 points, or 1.08 percent, to 4,023.
The Standard & Poor`s 500-stock index (^SPX - news) was up 11 points, or 0.74 percent, at 1,486.
Advances led declines by 1,305 to 1,072 on the New York Stock Exchange.
Barry Hyman, market strategist for Ehrenkrantz, King Nussbaum Inc. said Wall Street got a lift from Greenspan`s view that productivity was still on the rise.
``The market took it very well and I think you`re seeing it mostly in the Dow,`` he said.
In his remarks, Greenspan said it was still an open question whether the strong U.S. productivity boom represented a permanent structural change in the economy.
He said it would take a slowdown in the economy to show how much of a recent strong rise in productivity was permanent.
Increasing productivity -- or output of goods and services by U.S. workers -- is considered among the keys in controlling inflation.
The market was also weighing earnings reports from U.S. companies.
Among the Standard & Poor`s 500 components reporting on Tuesday are Internet media company Yahoo! Inc. (NasdaqNM:YHOO - news) and International Paper Co. (NYSE:IP - news).
Shares in VoiceStream Wireless Corp. (NasdaqNM:VSTR - news) were up 15-9/16 at 140-1/2. The Financial Times reported that Germany`s Deutsche Telekom was making a $30 billion bid for the telecommunications company.
Oil shares ticked higher after the International Energy Agency warned about dwindling heating oil inventories in the United States and Europe. The American Stock Exchange`s oil index (^XOI - news) rose 2.36 percent.

Greenspan-Aussagen treiben Markt
