I had my first cigarette 24 years ago when I was 9 years old. I stole it from my cousin who was babysitting my sister and me. I did it because I knew it was wrong and I knew cigarettes were bad for you even at that early age. Knowing it was wrong and potentially dangerous was the main reason I wanted to give it a try. It was the mischief of the situation that attracted me to that cigarette. My mother told me that she had her first cigarette in 1954 and that she was aware of the dangers of smoking at that time. She was 12 years old and did it for the same reasons I did, except that she shared her cigarette with a friend and had taken the smoke from my grandfather.

Fast forward to 1988 and you would have found me enjoying several packages of cigarettes per day. Chain smoking often while I wrote essays and studied to get my degree. I look back at those days with enormous fondness and remember not only my experiences in school but also the pleasure of cigarettes.

Around that time I began to notice that I was experiencing occasional shortness of breath and developing some asthmatic symptoms. I also had a summer job shoveling asphalt at the time so I was getting a real load of junk into my lungs from that as well. I continued to smoke for another six years and finally decided to quit for the sake of my health when I got married in 1994. I have not had a cigarette since that time.

Looking back, I can still remember how much I truly enjoyed smoking and I must say that at some time in the future I may decide to smoke again in spite of the health risks that we all are aware of. They say every cigarette takes 5 minutes off of your life. I guess knowing this, that it would be a reasonable choice to trade ten minutes of pleasure (the time it takes to smoke a typical cigarette) for a little less time at the end of my life, even knowing that each cigarette may have the potential to take statistically more. I think that this is a choice that most smokers have made. Democracy and freedom after all is about choice.

I bring this little life story up to illustrate a few facts. First, that I understood the dangers of smoking before I was 10 in 1976. My mother understood that there were risks involved with smoking at age 12 in 1954. This leads me to believe that anyone who claims to have been fooled by Big Tobacco has either been living on another planet, had their head up their rear or is truly an idiot. Evidently there are several hundred thousand idiots living in Florida as we speak.

The second point of this is that it did not take a doctor or some epiphany to convince me that smoking was the cause of the some of the symptoms I was experiencing and that I should stop smoking. I don`t consider myself to be any more intuitive than the average person. How can all of these smokers pretend that they couldn`t figure any of this out. I guess money really talks in the litigious society we are living in. How sad!

On another note, it is possible to quit smoking. I did it and so have millions of other people. Beyond this, I believe that the vast majority of adults are fully capable of weighing the risks associated with smoking cigarettes and are capable of making choices about smoking. As such I believe also that cigarettes should be available to adults because the risks are as calculable as those associated with drinking alcohol, or driving a car, or bungee jumping etc..

And finally, if I decide that I would like to smoke again, I am going to be madder than you could ever imagine if cigarettes are no longer available because no company can afford to produce them as a result of a court case in Florida. Go MO, and mardac, profanity is not cool on this board.

dieser Artikel sagt soviel aus über die Doppelzüngigkeit und die Amoralität des ganzen Getues gegen die Tabakfirmen. Auch klingt an, dass mancher sein ganzes Leben lang auf der Überholspur lebt, und wenn`s kracht sind die anderen schuld: Saufen - Alkoholhersteller, Bungee jumping - Kranaufsteller, Rauchen - Tabakfirmen, Verkehrsunfall - Autohersteller, Unfall beim Heckenschneiden mit dem Rasenmäher - Rasenmäherhersteller, weil er das nicht davor gewarnt hat ...
Der Kreativität sind keine Grenzen gesetzt!
Meiner Meinung nach sollte man aber zum Himmel schreiende (oder absichtliche?) Dummheit nicht auch noch belohnen!
USA - das Land der Freiheit! Freiheit heißt doch auch, den eigenen Körper kaputt machen zu können, oder etwa nicht???

Wer hat bloss nicht schon als Kleinkind (und das ist bei mir schon lange her) nicht gewusst, dass Rauchen schädlich ist!!!??? Hats nicht Vater und Mutter schon immer verboten, weil es nicht gesund ist!!!?? Mir unbegreiflich, dass sich die ex-Süchtigen nun um Schadenersatz streiten, aber besonders in Amerika ist Alles möglich. hallo an alle!

hier wuerde ich gerne noch zwei willkuerliche beispiele aus der amerikanische rechtsprechung anführen:

1) ein betrunkener autofahrer fuhr einen nieder, der gerade in einer telefonzelle neben der strasse telefonierte. natuerlich klagte der geschaedigte. ausgang des rechtsstreits: die telefonfirma wurde schuldig gesprochen, weil sie die telefonzelle zu nahe an der strasse aufstellte ...

2) nachdem einem idioten (die usa sind wirklich voll davon [glaubt man der jurisdiktion]) eine leiter auf eisigem boden weggerutscht war, klagte er den hersteller, und der wurde natuerlich schuldig gesprochen. seitdem muessen alle leitern die warnung tragen, dass man sie nicht auf eisigem untergrund aufstellen darf ...

amerika, wo wird das von enden ?!
