New PCCW/C&W HKT entity poised to make `shocking` moves

The deputy chairman of the Pacific Century CyberWorks Limited, Francis Yuen said the merged entity between it and C & W HKT (0008-HK) will be able to accomplish deals which amaze people in terms of sizes and speed. Sources said PCCW will announced next week that it will form an alliance with an Japanese content provider to launch broadband its multi-media service NOW in Japan. In addition, the chief executive of C & W HKT, Linus Cheung, will become the deputy chairman of the new entity. The deputy CEO and financial director, David Prince will turn chief financial officer.

Yuen also told wire service Reuters that PCCW (1186-HK) will concentrate on three main fields of business including C & W HKT-related business which will be the major source of income and profit of PCCW in short term; the joint venture with Telstra and also its broadband services.

Allerdings kann man Hikari Tsushin kaum als content provider verstehen.

PCCW set to leverage HKT assets - Yuen
      REUTERS

      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Long constrained by its corporate masters in London, Cable & Wireless HKT`s formidable assets will be leveraged to help Pacific Century CyberWorks fulfil its ambitions to be a global new media colossus, PCCW deputy chairman Francis Yuen said on Friday.
Following the scheduled August 17 closing of PCCW`s US$30.4 billion takeover of HKT - a deal PCCW bills as the largest-ever merger in Asia - the firm`s eight business units would be organised into three groups, Mr Yuen said.

The Hong Kong telecoms business, which will consist of the core HKT`s holdings and be the chief source of the combined firm`s revenue in the short term.

A unit holding the new company`s wireless and Internet Protocol (IP) backbone joint ventures with Australian carrier Telstra Corp. Those businesses are set to be spun-off through initial public offerings.

Broadband services, including PCCW`s recently launched Network of the World (NOW) converged Internet and video service.
"The second and third are going to grow quite substantially in the future," Mr Yuen said.

A company spokeswoman said details on PCCW`s other units - including the planned Cyber-Port business park and data centre businesses - would be announced soon.

"The HKT business is going to be the engine driving the short-term profit and revenue growth, whereas the NOW is in our future," Mr Yuen said.

PCCW`s joint venture with Telstra to provide IP backbone services would have a market-leading position in Asia and had powerful growth prospects that could take it global, he said.

"That could be even bigger than the Hong Kong business in the not too distant future," Mr Yuen said.

      Cash and expertise

Mr Yuen said that in addition to providing cash to fuel PCCW`s more ambitious undertakings, HKT also brought network management and engineering expertise.

"In the past, they have been constrained by their parent company, so they could not export their expertise," Mr Yuen said, referring to controlling shareholder Cable & Wireless.

"Now they are free to do it. That expertise also is a very good foundation for them to grow into other businesses, particularly the Internet business," he said.

Mr Yuen also said the negative effects on HKT of Hong Kong`s deregulated telecoms market, which triggered ferocious price competition, appeared to be "bottoming out".

But reconciling PCCW`s new-economy speed and flexibility with HKT`s more traditional style would be a challenge, Mr Yuen said.

While parent Cable & Wireless pursued international ambitions, HKT`s mandate was limited to Hong Kong, he said.

"We have to change to a more international mindset, [focused] a little bit less on bureaucracy, more on imagination, flexibility," Mr Yuen said.

Also, HKT could not leverage its proximity to mainland China, while PCCW could. "We feel more confident because we know this part of the world better," Mr Yuen said.

Mr Yuen said PCCW, which propelled itself from near-obscurity with its audacious deal for Hong Kong`s dominant telco, said PCCW`s deal-making would continue.

"We have a very energetic leader, who probably will not stop here," he said, referring to young tycoon and PCCW chairman Richard Li Tzar-kai.

"We have to continue doing deals to realise our goal more quickly to become more of a global company."

Asked whether any deal was imminent, Mr Yuen said company-watchers would be "surprised by both the scale, and the deal that we might be doing", as well as how soon it might come.

Tipp: www.chinaonline.com - www.tom.com - www.hongkong.com -
