DJ Hikari Tsushin/Results -5: Hurt By Huge Special Losses

TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Hikari Tsushin Inc. (J.HKR or 9435) said Tuesday it sank into the red for the seven months ended March 31, hurt by huge special losses on investments in affiliates, the sale of its Hong Kong unit and losses on securities holdings.

The mobile phone distributor and Internet-business investor had a group net loss of Y16.12 billion for the period.

On-year comparisons weren`t available, as the company`s earnings period last fiscal year was irregular. Hikari changed its fiscal term to the year ending March from the year ending August from last fiscal year.

The company recorded a group operating profit of Y3.81 billion for the seven-month period, on revenue of Y71.06 billion.

The results are broadly in line with Hikari`s estimate made in February of a group net loss of Y16.5 billion and an operating profit of Y3.6 billion.

For the current fiscal year through March 2003, Hikari forecasts a group net profit of Y1.8 billion and an operating profit of Y8.4 billion on revenue of Y102.4 billion.

DJ Hikari Tsushin/Results -6: To Further Trim Debt This FY

In the fiscal year ended August 2001, the company posted a group net loss of Y56.35 billion and an operating profit of Y5.52 billion on revenue of Y123.08 billion.

In a bid to return to a profitability, Hikari is carrying out drastic restructuring in terms of both operations and financial structure.

In the seven-month term, Hikari`s group-based special loss totaled Y20.35 billion, it said.

The company slashed its parent-based interest-bearing debt to Y832 million at the end of March from Y1.13 billion at the end of last August. Hikari plans to further cut the amount to Y413 million at the end of March 2003, it said.

On a parent-only basis, Hikari had a pretax profit of Y2.91 billion on revenue of Y19.78 billion for the seven months ended March 31.

The company will omit a dividend payment again for the last fiscal year, it said.

DJ Hikari Tsushin/Results -7: To Focus On Corporate Business

Hikari Tsushin said it will shift its business focus to services for corporate customers from mobile phone handset sales.

"The mobile phone market is becoming a mature market," Hikari Tsushin president Yasumitsu Shigeta said.

Among corporate services, the company will focus on e-mail hosting services, sales of office automation equipment and computer server leasing for midsize companies.

In the seven months to March, sales of mobile phones accounted for 62% of the firm`s sales, while services for corporate customers accounted for 26%.

However, sales of mobile phones are expected to fall to 53% of total sales this year through March 2003, while corporate business is forecast to rise to 43%.

In the year ended August 2000, mobile phones sales accounted for 84% of the company`s overall sales, with only 10% coming from its corporate business.

On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, Hikari Tsushin shares finished Tuesday up 2.1% at Y1,067 prior to the announcement of its results and outlook. The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average ended the down 0.3%.
