Network Appliance earnings beat estimates
(UPDATE: updates share price, adds background)
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Feb 8 (Reuters) - Computer data storage maker Network Appliance Inc. (NasdaqNM:NTAP - news) reported on Thursday third-quarter earnings that topped Wall Street estimates and revenues that rose 91 percent from a year earlier, but just below analysts` forecasts.
Operating earnings rose to $38.9 million, or 11 cents a share, on sales of $288.4 million, from profits of $19.8 million, or 6 cents a share, on sales of $151.3 million, in the quarter a year earlier.
Analysts on average had expected earnings of 10 cents a share on revenues of $292.73 million, according to a poll by First Call/Thomson Financial.
Network Appliance has been under pressure recently after a number of analysts downgraded the firm, questioning whether it would be able to thrive after storage giant EMC Corp. (NYSE:EMC - news) moved into the part of the market Network Appliance dominates.
Network Appliance shares were almost unchanged in after-hours trade at $35-1/4, compared with a close of $35-3/16 on Nasdaq.
``Storage is a strategic IT investment and remains a priority for today`s leading corporations,`` Chief Executive Dan Warmenhoven said in a statement. ``We are clearly encouraged by the enterprise penetration of our new high-end systems.``
Network Appliance is the leader in a niche market for stand-alone data storage units, or appliances, that improve network efficiency by taking on functions that otherwise would slow servers.
EMC`s entrance into that market has led many analysts to lower forecasts for Network Appliance, although the company has said that EMC`s move validates the storage appliance business model and market.
Network Appliance shares have underperformed those of EMC by about 20 percent since the end of 1999 and have lost about 75 percent of their value since October and more than 50 percent since January 23, when they closed at $73-9/16.

so long + glta

Erfahrung, Vorzeigekunden, Software, Zertifizierungen, Service usw. = Qualität,
Wenn ich meine Unternehmenskritsche Daten, z.B. SAP,
