Von einer Investition in Aktien der Immune Response Corporation (WKN 879428) sollten Anleger nach Ansicht der Experten vom Börsenbrief Global Biotech Investing Abstand nehmen.

"Dieser Wert habe eindrucksvoll bewiesen, das in kleinen spekulativen Biotech-Aktien nicht nur ein hohes Kurspotential, sondern ein ebenso großes Risiko stecke. Am 01. Juni habe der Titel nach einem vorherigen steilen Anstieg massiv an Wert verloren.

Zurückzuführen sei dies auf eine negative Meldung bezüglich der Wirksamkeit vom AIDS-Medikament Remune, dem Flaggschiff-Produkt des Unternehmens. Die Gesellschaft habe zwar noch zwei Wirkstoffe gegen Arthritis in vorklinischen Testphasen, aber ob diese weitergeführt würden, sei offen.

Die Liquidität reiche noch für 4 Quartale. Dann müsse eine neue Finanzierungsrunde abgeschlossen werden, da sonst das Aus drohe.

Das Researchteam habe nur wenige Minuten nach der Veröffentlichung der Meldung über die schlechten Ergebnisse der Phase II zum Verkauf der Aktien über deren Daily-Information-Service via Fax, Infoline und eMail geraten.

Diesen Titel sollten Investoren meiden, so die Empfehlung der Wertpapieranalysten."

Die gleiche Global Biotech Investing hat im März und April (zugegeben, gute Empfehlung, hab auch daraufhin gekauft) zwei Kaufempfehlungen abgegeben. Interessant ist nur der 2.-letzte Abschnitt, dass via fax, infoline und email (ach, wie modern) zum Verkauf empfohlen wurde. NUR: DANN WAR ES SCHON ZU SPAET, DER KURS WAR SCHON UM 60% GEFALLEN!

werden nun schering und co. das schiff verlassen? steht die aktuelle bewertung für eine firmenbewertung ohne remune? oder ist im aktuellen kurs noch viel potential nach unten?

IMNR ? Tot oder Gold. Da ist was faul. Bin seit 1 1/4 Jahren
drin. Was da in den letzten 6 Wochen und vorher gelaufen ist,
kann ich nicht mehr nachvollziehen. Vor 3 Monaten hat GRUNTAL
die Aktie noch hochgelobt. Dann die Höhen und Tiefen. Jetzt
der Austieg von PFIZER.Entweder wird IMNR in Kürze von einem
Großen geschluckt oder die gehen mangels Kapital den Bach
runter. Glaube eher daran, dass jemand da ein Schnäppchen
macht und IMNR schluckt. Ich bleibe auf jeden Fall dabei.
Verkaufen. Nein. Bin immer noch von diesem Wert überzeugt.
Fahre erst `mal in Urlaub nach Griechenland und werde
abwarten.

Immune Response Corp.`s stock value fell by 44 percent yesterday after drug giant Pfizer terminated a multimillion-dollar pact to develop an experimental HIV vaccine.

The deal`s collapse casts doubt over the viability of the therapeutic vaccine, dubbed Remune, and over the future of the Carlsbad-based biotech company co-founded by the late Jonas Salk.

The stock closed at $2.58. In the past year it has fluctuated wildly, from a low of $1.35 to a high of $12.44.

Pfizer`s La Jolla-based Agouron Pharmaceuticals unit, which began the collaboration with Immune Response in 1998, said its decision to withdraw was "based on review of data from several clinical trials."

Last month, in a setback that foreshadowed yesterday`s move, Immune Response announced that a patient study in Europe showed that Remune failed to slow the growth of the HIV virus.

Remune, an inactivated form of HIV, is designed to help the body`s immune system recognize and fight the virus that causes AIDS.

Immune Response yesterday vowed to continue developing its vaccine for use in Thailand and other countries, as well as the United States. The company employs 150 people in the United States, half of them in Carlsbad.

"The company is obviously disappointed . . . but it is dedicated to the development of Remune," said Laura Hansen, a spokeswoman for Immune Response.

Yet some Wall Street analysts said the loss of its only major research partner could prove a death knell for the money-losing biotech, which has spent more than $200 million developing Remune. The company has no other product in late-stage development.

Pfizer, through Agouron, had taken on most of the costs of final-stage testing of the vaccine in humans. Immune Response, which received $47 million from the Agouron collaboration, must now forgo an additional $30 million in milestone payments related to the vaccine`s development.

The apparent vote of no-confidence in Remune will make it difficult for Immune Response to find another partner to fund the costly clinical trials, said some analysts.

And Immune Response has only $21 million in available cash, enough to fund operations for six months, according to regulatory filings.

"These guys don`t have a whole lot left on their plate," said John McCamant, editor of the Berkeley-based Medical Technology Stock Letter. "The vaccine technology is older and hasn`t produced the data it needs to show the medical community how it can go out there and make a difference."

Though Immune Response has repeatedly failed to impress medical researchers and federal regulators with its vaccine, the company has been successful in selling itself to investors since it was founded in 1987.

As a result, it has proven to be one of the most tenacious biotechs in San Diego County. The company has suffered and recovered from the kinds of scientific and financial setbacks that have toppled scores of other biotechs -- including the loss in 1995 of its original research partner, French drug maker Rhone-Poulenc Rorer.

Yet with that tenacity has come controversy, and critics have accused the company of spinning conflicting or inconclusive data on Remune in too positive a manner.

In November, Immune Response became embroiled in an embarrassing dispute with independent researchers who said the company tried to block publication of a report that said Remune did not work.

The report, which appeared in The Journal of the American Medical Association, concluded that the vaccine did not reduce virus load, slow progression of the disease or keep patients healthier.

The report was based on results of a failed, late-stage U.S. clinical trial that was halted in 1999. At the time, the company acknowledged that Remune didn`t improve patient survival, but insisted the vaccine produced enough benefits to warrant a new study.

It was the new study, which sought to prove that Remune reduces the amount of virus in the blood and increase virus-fighting cells, that Agouron was backing.

Local AIDS activists said Immune Response`s latest setback is not much of a surprise, given the challenges of HIV. Since 1987, 30 experimental HIV vaccines have been tested in people, and none has proved successful.

Greg Curran -- a staff member of Being Alive, a San Diego HIV support group -- said he has been taking the experimental Remune vaccine for about three years, but without much confidence.

"Remune`s been around a long time, and hasn`t shown much efficacy," Curran said. "Why spend more money on it? We should learn from the experience and move on and develop something else."
