.

Grüße A.S.

MS snows on AT&T`s TV plans
Microsoft`s delay in providing software for 10 million cable boxes could further slow the planned rollout of AT&T`s interactive services.

Delays by Microsoft Corp. in providing interactive-television software to AT&T Corp. could further slow AT&T`s planned rollout of interactive services and prompt the company to consider other vendors for part of its project deploying 10 million TV set-top boxes, people familiar with the matter said.
Losing any part of the AT&T (NYSE: T) deal would be a black eye for Microsoft, which long has touted its commitment to supply high-end software for as many as 10 million AT&T cable boxes. The pact is the cornerstone of Microsoft`s fledgling efforts in digital TV, one of the many new businesses the Redmond, Wash., company is targeting for growth as its Windows and Office computer-software lines age.

"WSJ": Microsoft-Probleme behindert interaktive Fernsehenpläne bei AT&T
AT&T werde sich weiter hinter Microsoft stellen.

But Microsoft`s TV project recently has run into snags, many of which were disclosed in a meeting between Microsoft and AT&T executives about a month ago, the people familiar with the matter said. Those technical issues -- which also have thrown a wrench into Microsoft`s deployment of advanced TV software for a European cable company, United Pan-Europe Communications NV -- are now on AT&T`s mind as it figures out how many boxes it will allow Microsoft to outfit.
"We`re evaluating that with Microsoft, and we`re moving forward with them to get this trial done as quickly as we can," said Rich Fickle, AT&T`s senior vice president and program director for interactive TV. The first technical trials for the software now aren`t expected until around the first of next year, people familiar with the matter said; last year, both companies had hoped to wire up "showcase cities" for interactive TV by this summer.
AT&T has said for several months it hopes the showcase-city project will launch next year.
Fickle said the software Microsoft is developing for AT&T, based on the Windows CE operating system, "is a very complex product, and the Microsoft guys are, I think, pretty focused on working hard on this and are reacting well to the fact that there have been some unexpected bumps in the road. They`re coming back strong ... we`re going to stay committed."
Still, Fickle stressed that AT&T`s agreement with Microsoft, hammered out last year and sweetened by a $5 billion Microsoft investment in the New York phone and cable company, always has been nonexclusive and wouldn`t give Microsoft a lock on future AT&T cable business. And while Microsoft often touts its commitment to provide software for 10 million boxes, it only has a deal to equip 7.5 million; the other 2.5 million boxes are optional, Microsoft acknowledges.
Asked if Microsoft had talked with AT&T about whether it would get to outfit the other 2.5 million boxes, or if any other part of deal was in jeopardy, Microsoft official Alan Yates said: "That`s pretty far down the road. ... We assume that they evaluate virtually every vendor in the marketplace all the time. They`ve been very clear from the beginning that their network is open to alternative technology suppliers." Yates is head of marketing for Microsoft`s TV-platforms division.
His boss, Jon DeVaan, the senior vice president in charge of all Microsoft`s TV efforts, remains upbeat about the project and notes that TV software involves "a very complicated development process. We`ll take our time and do it right."
Unlike personal computers or even satellite-TV systems, interactive-TV software involves several layers of technology that must work with multiple hardware providers, computer servers, companies that supply actual TV shows and Web services, as well as other "plug-ins," such as home-video cameras, Microsoft said.
But competitors such as Liberate Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: LBRT) and OpenTV Corp. (Nasdaq: OPTV) say they have been able to surmount such difficulties and already have shipped software for set-top boxes. United Pan-Europe, based in the Netherlands, plans to test software from those two companies as it scrambles to meet a looming deadline for deploying about 30,000 boxes.
DeVaan says Microsoft "will still be rolling out early trial versions with UPC," though the boxes won`t offer "advanced digital services," as Microsoft and UPC originally hoped. And Microsoft only recently received the hardware for the boxes from another vendor, Yates said.
Microsoft owns about 8 percent of UPC, so its stake "may be buying them a little more tolerance than they usually get," said Josh Bernoff, an analyst with Forrester Research Inc. in Cambridge, Mass. Microsoft has been criticized in the industry for trying to buy its way into interactive TV.
All the same, the delays in Europe are a "discouraging omen" for Microsoft`s deal with AT&T, Bernoff said. If the AT&T project succeeds, "they`ve got a place to start from. And if they don`t, they might as well fold up and go home."
Executives of Liberate and OpenTV declined to say if the recent Microsoft delays had sparked any new conversations with AT&T, saying they talk to major cable companies all the time. With regard to UPC, however, "I think we`re optimistic about winning some further business from them," said Randy Livingston, OpenTV`s chief financial officer.

@DonDiego,

(axv/c`t)

AT&T may mull other vendors after Microsoft delay
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp.`s (MSFT.O) delay in providing interactive-television software may slow AT&T Corp.`s (T.N) technical trials of the technology and could limit the number of set-top boxes the telephone company lets Microsoft outfit, sources familiar with the situation say.
AT&T, the No. 1 U.S. long-distance telephone and cable TV company, last year agreed to have Microsoft supply the software for 7.5 million of its planned 10 million interactive-TV set-top boxes. AT&T has said Microsoft or another vendor could supply the software for the remaining boxes.
Software giant`s Microsoft`s deal with AT&T has been one of its highest-profile moves into the emerging market for high-speed Internet and cable TV services. Microsoft`s software delivers voice, video and Internet services through the small cable boxes that sit on top of television sets.
Microsoft confirmed earlier this month that its interactive-TV software would not be ready for the planned October roll-out of another client, United Pan-Europe Communications NV, which is Europe`s largest cable operator.
The delay could slow AT&T`s interactive-TV roll-out as well. Microsoft and AT&T met last month to discuss the problem, sources said. The potential delay was first reported by The Wall Street Journal on Monday.
AT&T declined to comment. Microsoft said its relationship with AT&T has not been jeopardized and AT&T remains committed to having Microsoft outfit the 7.5 million boxes.
AT&T`s first technical trials of the technology have been pushed back to early next year, sources said Monday. Both companies originally hoped to have ``showcase cities`` ready for interactive TV by this summer.
Microsoft`s delay could prompt AT&T to more seriously consider other suppliers, the sources said.
Microsoft`s interactive TV software competes against operating systems from companies such as Oracle, PowerTV, Liberate Technologies Inc. (LBRT.O) and OpenTV Corp.(OPTV.O).

OpenTV shares zoom on reports of AT&T`s interest
By Bloomberg News
August 29, 2000, 4:00 p.m. PT
OpenTV shares rose 24 percent today on
speculation that the software company may benefit from Microsoft`s reported delays in providing software for interactive television to AT&T.
The stock closed up $9.44 to $48.31 on a volume of 2.32 million shares, more than six times its average volume. Mountain View, Calif.-based OpenTV is the largest U.S. maker of software for interactive television.
Microsoft`s delay may cause AT&T, the largest cable TV provider in the United States, to turn to other companies, such as OpenTV, The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday.
OpenTV has been in talks with AT&T and other big cable companies about possible alliances in which OpenTV`s software would be used in the cable providers` set-top boxes, OpenTV spokesman Mark Meagher said, adding that talks were "complicated," and nothing is imminent.
AT&T and Microsoft declined to comment.

Can Liberate cash in on Microsoft`s set-top stumble?
By Stephanie Miles and Dawn Kawamoto

Liberate Technologies is in serious talks to put its software into AT&T`s cable TV set-top boxes, sources said today.
The negotiations are a slap in the face for Microsoft, whose own AT&T software trials have been repeatedly delayed.
Executives from AT&T and Liberate have been meeting regularly to discuss a potential deal that would put Liberate`s interactive TV software into AT&T cable set-top boxes, according to high-level sources close to the situation. The talks come amid increasing reports of delays in Microsoft`s development of similar software for AT&T.
Last week, Liberate engineer Jan Van Doorn visited AT&T to demonstrate how Liberate`s software would work in AT&T set-top boxes, sources said. In addition, AT&T has been approaching Microsoft`s third-party software developers, inquiring whether their software would also work with Liberate`s technology.
AT&T declined to comment on specific negotiations with Liberate. "We`re talking to a lot of companies a lot of the time," an AT&T representative said. "Our interactive TV platform has always been designed to be an open platform with multiple vendors."
Liberate declined to comment on any talks.
The news is the latest black eye for Microsoft`s TV group, which has been marked by delays and management shakeups, as the company has struggled to find a market for its retail WebTV set-top boxes and Microsoft TV server software.
Many of the key Microsoft executives charged with managing the company`s relationship with AT&T have left the group in the past year, one source said, explaining that many Microsoft employees were concerned about missed deadlines and contract renegotiations. "Things can`t be good now," the source said.
One possible scenario has Liberate serving as either an alternative or secondary platform for AT&T`s set-top boxes, sources said. Also possible: AT&T is using the negotiations as leverage to force Microsoft to finish the development and begin testing the boxes.
"AT&T needs some way to hedge its bets," said Richard Doherty, an industry analyst and president of The Envisioneering Group. He added that AT&T is likely getting nervous as major fall industry trade shows loom, where cable operators typically show off next year`s products. If AT&T misses the shows, he said, it will likely have to wait an entire year to introduce the boxes.
"Despite the $5 billion investment (by Microsoft), AT&T can`t take that chance," Doherty said.
Microsoft and AT&T have been jointly working on the interactive TV project since Microsoft`s $5 billion investment in AT&T last year. But as the software delays continue, AT&T appears to be exploiting the nonexclusive nature of its relationship with Microsoft.
Although AT&T has held talks with Liberate in the past, the discussions have been stepped up as of late, one source said. "Since Microsoft is behind, AT&T is considering its alternatives, and that`s the reason for the frequent activities" with Liberate, the source said.
While Microsoft faces delays in delivering its software for set-top boxes, Liberate is shipping its products in the United States and Europe. However, those familiar with Liberate`s product caution that the software is not necessarily technically superior to Microsoft`s.
"It might not be the `full monty,`" Doherty said.
Still, sources said, it`s unlikely that AT&T would dump Microsoft outright, especially given that the software giant is a large partner and investor in AT&T. In addition, the cable industry is subject to sudden whims and changes in direction.
"You can`t say a deal is imminent. That word doesn`t exist in the cable industry`s vocabulary," one source joked.
In recent days, Liberate`s stock, along with that of other Microsoft competitors such as Excite@Home and OpenTV, has surged on speculation swirling about Microsoft`s delays. Liberate shares shot up more than 15 percent today, to as high as $29.94, from a close of $24.44 yesterday, on news that BellSouth would use Liberate software in its satellite boxes.

100 Mio.

AT&T to use Liberate interactive TV software
SAN CARLOS, Calif. (Reuters) - AT&T Broadband, the entertainment business unit of AT&T Corp. (T.N), said on Thursday it would use Liberate Technologies Inc.`s (LBRT.O)interactive-television software in set-top boxes for its pilot tests, which are slated to start later this year.
Liberate`s software provides Internet-styled properties to television via a set-top box. In the AT&T trials, the software is planned for a Motorola Inc. (MOT.N) box.
If the trials are successful, the companies expect to distribute the advanced interactive-television services commercially.
Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O), an AT&T shareholder, agreed last year to supply the interactive-television software for 7.5 million of AT&T`s planned 10 million interactive-TV set-top boxes. But sources said late last month that Microsoft`s delay in providing the software could delay AT&T`s technical trials of the technology.
Such delays could limit the number of set-top boxes equipped with Microsoft software, the sources said.
Europe`s largest cable TV operator UPC (UPEC.AS) (UPCOY.O) said it would use Liberate`s software, after the Microsoft software was delayed.
