Bio-Rad Selected by the CEA (a French
Research Agency) to Produce a Diagnostic Test
for BSE, or "Mad Cow Disease"
HERCULES, CA, February 5, 2000 — Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc. announced
today that it was selected by France`s Commissariat a l`énergie atomique or CEA, to
produce and market a diagnostic test for BSE (Bovine Spongiform
Encephalopathy) or "Mad Cow Disease." Among the four tests investigated by
the European Commission (EC), the Bio-Rad/CEA test was determined to be the
most sensitive. Working in collaboration with the CEA, Bio-Rad plans to
commercialize this test, an immunodiagnostic assay using brain stem samples
from cattle. Industrialization of the product is under way, with epidemiological
studies soon to begin, as announced by the French Health Authority.
Bio-Rad has a worldwide exclusive option right on the test`s intellectual property,
which is owned by the CEA. Bio-Rad is a major supplier of tests and platforms
for the surveillance of food safety and public health. Among the Company`s
products are assays and instrumentation for listeria, salmonella, EHEC and E.
coli 0157-H7 bacteria.
BSE is a source of intense fear in the European Community. The disease was
identified in Great Britain (where it is widespread) in 1986, after which more than
175,000 head of cattle were destroyed. Though several European countries have
now reported infected livestock, the prevalence of BSE infection among
European herds today is uncertain. The primary objective is to determine
whether or not BSE can be detected before the animal shows symptoms of the
disease. Success in this effort would help assure the safety of the food supply.
Further epidemiological studies will be needed to determine if there is a
connection between BSE and the human form of the disease, called new variant
Creutzfeld-Jakob Disease (Nv CJD).
Though there is no direct evidence, it is feared that people eating meat
products from BSE-exposed cattle could contract Nv CJD from it. Incubation time
for this fatal disease is long, so its long-term effects on humans are not known.
Severe neurological problems are a possibility, therefore an epidemic of Nv CJD
today could translate into significant public health problems in future years. It is
this scenario that is of widespread concern. In screening prospective donors,
United States blood banks disqualify those who have lived in Great Britain for a
specified length of time. In Europe, fear of the spread of BSE has provoked
trade disputes among neighboring countries over the importation and testing of
meat products.
"We are very excited to assume a leadership role in the commercialization of
this important product," stated Bio-Rad President and CEO David Schwartz. "We
are aware of the anxiety that exists about BSE, and we see our work with the
CEA as an opportunity to shed some light on this mysterious disease."
Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc. (www.bio-rad.com) is a multinational manufacturer
and distributor of life science research products, clinical diagnostics and
analytical instrumentation, based in Hercules, California. The company serves
more than 70,000 research and industry customers worldwide through a network
of more than 30 wholly owned subsidiary offices.

also 865406.

Was denkt Ihr?
Auszug aus Protherics-Geschäftsbericht 2000
BSE Diagnostic Test: There is significant public concern in Europe with respect to BSE (bovine spongiform
encephalopathy - commonly known as “mad cow disease”). Protherics has licensed its intellectual property in transmittable spongiform encephalopathy, or “TSE”, diagnosis to Enfer Scientific Limited for application in the worldwide development and marketing of a test to determine whether beef carcasses are infected by BSE. Enfer has developed a high throughput test and established a dedicated laboratory and logistic support to provide a testing service on beef carcasses in the slaughterhouse prior to release of the carcasses into the food chain.
As part of a program to address the political, commercial and health issues, a European Union validation study has
undertaken a review of a number of alternative BSE detection tests of which four companies’ tests were accepted for detailed evaluation. On 25 June 1999 the European Union announced the results of this evaluation. The evaluation showed that three of the four tests selected for the study were 100 per cent accurate in detecting BSE in samples from known affected animals. Enfer’s test was one of these tests and proved to be the fastest. It also performed well on diluted samples which may provide some indication of its possible effectiveness in detecting preclinical disease. The EC has recently mandated that BSE surveillance programmes have to be put in place across the EU by January 2001, using one or more of the validated tests
