Toshiba to temporarily trim chip output
(UPDATE: Updates with closing share prices; adds analyst comments)
By Edmund Klamann
TOKYO, June 20 (Reuters) - Toshiba Corp, Japan`s biggest chipmaker, said on Wednesday it will temporarily
cut chip output this summer, in the first public sign the Japanese industry`s projections for a recovery later this year were too rosy.
``Toshiba won`t be the only one,`` said Lehman Brothers analyst Scott Foster. ``When Japan is in
big trouble, they take long summer vacations.``
Analysts expect profits at the semiconductor divisions of Japan`s five chipmaking conglomerates
will fall well short of official targets for the year to next March, with semiconductor demand,
especially from cellphone makers, remaining stubbornly sluggish.
In a report earlier this month, Merrill Lynch analyst Hitoshi Shin estimated that the five -- which also
include Hitachi Ltd , NEC Corp , Fujitsu Ltd and Mitsubishi Electric Corp -- would post an
aggregate operating loss in semiconductors of 56 billion yen ($455.8 million), compared with the
firms` own combined profit target of 224 billion yen.
Toshiba said its summer cutbacks, to be implemented from late July to mid-August, would include
a two- to three-week shutdown of a transistor plant that supplies cellphone makers and a plant
making commodity-grade integrated circuits.
It will also temporarily trim output by 30 percent at a memory chip plant in Yokkaichi, central Japan, and cut operating rates at its Oita plant in
southern Japan that makes microcontrollers for cellphones and consumer products.
A Toshiba spokesman said it was unclear, however, whether the cuts would affect production and earnings targets for the full business year.
The conglomerates` share prices have tumbled in recent weeks as the chances for a second-half chip market recovery ebbed, and many
extended their losses on Wednesday.
CELLPHONE SLUMP
Fujitsu fell for a fourth consecutive session, sliding to 1,293 yen, its lowest intraday level since late 1998, before paring losses to end at 1,315
yen, down 1.13 percent.
Analysts expect the company will have to reconsider its plans for a two-thirds increase this year in production capacity for flash memory, a key
component in cellphones. A spokesman said no changes had been made to the company`s plans.
Shares in Mitsubishi Electric, also a major flash memory maker, slid to an 18-month low of 588 yen before closing at 597 yen, down 1.16
percent.
Toshiba fell a more modest 0.48 percent to end at 626 yen, although it is fast closing in on a 2-1/2 year low of 616 yen hit in March.
But NEC and Hitachi, while likely to be hurt hard by a slump in dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) prices, have recently put in relatively
buoyant performances.
NEC, Japan`s second-largest chipmaker, fell 2.12 percent to 1,710 yen but was still a reasonable distance from its March low of 1,520,
cushioned by positive perceptions of its aggressive restructuring plans including a withdrawal from DRAM production.
Hitachi Ltd was the only gainer among the five conglomerates on Wednesday, rising 1.68 percent to 1,212 yen. Investors have been impressed
by rapid growth in its data storage business.
``For Hitachi and NEC, there are major positive factors aside from semiconductors,`` said ABN Amro analyst Satoru Oyama, who identified
Mitsubishi Electric and Toshiba as those with greatest exposure to the chip market`s woes.
Lehman`s Foster said, however, that Toshiba appeared better positioned than some of its peers to weather the semiconductor downdraft,
pointing to its brisk business making chips for Sony Corp`s popular PlayStation2 game console.
He also noted that, while Fujitsu and Mitsubishi Electric are major producers of NOR flash memory for cellphones, Toshiba makes NAND flash
memory used in digital cameras and MP3 audio players, which have remained relatively buoyant amid the current downturn.

Toshiba kaufen
