WorldCom Issues October 2002 Operating Results
Thursday December 26, 4:00 pm ET
CLINTON, Miss., Dec. 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- WorldCom, Inc. today filed its October 2002 Monthly Operating Report with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. During the month of October 2002, WorldCom recorded $2.3 billion in revenue, $300 million in earnings before interest, taxes depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) and a net loss from continuing operations of $205 million. WorldCom`s capital expenditures for the month were approximately $53 million, including $22 million for property and equipment and $31 million for related software.
WorldCom ended October with approximately $2.1 billion in cash on hand, an increase of $600 million from the beginning of the month with approximately half of the increase the result of non-recurring receivables collections.
The financial results discussed in this release and the October 2002 Monthly Operating Report exclude the results of Embratel. However, this Monthly Operating Report includes a supplemental schedule that reflects WorldCom`s consolidated Statement of Operations for the third quarter of 2002 ended September 30, 2002, which includes Embratel results. Until WorldCom completes a thorough balance sheet evaluation, including reviews of goodwill, property and equipment, accrual balances and allowances for doubtful accounts, the Company will not issue a balance sheet or cash flow statement as part of its Monthly Operating Report.
The Monthly Operating Reports are available on WorldCom`s Restructuring Information Desk at http://www.worldcom.com.
Based on current information and a preliminary analysis of its ability to satisfy outstanding liabilities, WorldCom believes when it emerges from bankruptcy proceedings, its existing WorldCom and Intermedia preferred stock and WorldCom group and MCI group tracking stock issues will have no value.

Scandals yield bargain stocks
New money manager survey says stocks like Tyco and WorldCom could be good deals for investors.
December 26, 2002: 12:23 PM EST
NEW YORK, (Reuters) - Stocks that have been tainted by the year`s biggest corporate scandals, like Tyco and WorldCom, are a good buying opportunity, according to a survey of big money managers released Thursday.
Alleged misdoing at Tyco and WorldCom followed the Enron Corp (ENRNQ: Research, Estimates). scandal and were part of an ongoing deterioration of investor confidence in corporate America.
But, more than 45 percent of 156 large investors polled by Broadgate Consultants said scandal-tainted companies are a bargain as their stocks have taken a beating. Once they install new management and boards, they are potentially attractive, the investors said.
Shares of WorldCom (WCOEQ: Research, Estimates), which filed for bankruptcy in July, trade on the Pink Sheets, akin to a minor league exchange for companies kicked off the Nasdaq or New York Stock Exchange. The stock last traded at 16 cents.
Shares of Tyco (TYC: up $0.05 to $16.04, Research, Estimates), plagued by probes into the activity of past management, are hovering around $16, a far cry from their Dec. 31, 2001 price of $59.79.
The overwhelming majority of poll respondents wanted to see the Securities and Exchange Commission continue to crack down on bogus accounting. More than 71 percent of investors want the agency to keep the corporate probes going, particularly of auditing firms.
The investors expressed less confidence in the new nominee to lead the SEC, William Donaldson. About 40 percent of respondents said he was not the best choice to replace Harvey Pitt, which is evidence of concern Donaldson`s background may not serve him well.
Donaldson co-founded Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, a top investment bank that was eventually sold to Credit Suisse First Boston. Donaldson`s critics contend he is too close to Wall Street, which has faced its own scandals for alleged conflicts of interest in its research departments and stock allocation practices.

New York, Dec. 27 (Bloomberg) -- AT&T Corp. and WorldCom`s MCI Communications Corp., the No. 1 and No. 2 long-distance carriers, and other companies will raise fees in 2003, possibly marking the end of low-cost, long-distance, USA Today reported.
AT&T will increase the monthly fee new residential customers pay for its 7 cents-a-minute plan to $4.95 from $3.95, the newspaper said. This month, MCI raised the monthly fee on one of its plans to $12.95 from $10.95, and Sprint customers who don`t subscribe to a plan faced a November increase of 18 percent per minute, the newspaper said.
Phone companies are trying to increase revenue to offset the loss of customers who are increasingly relying on cell phones and e-mail to communicate, USA Today said.
The increased prices may signal the decline of competition, the newspaper said, citing unnamed consumer advocates.

Comeback für Worldcom !
Experts Say Economy Poised for Comeback
United States, Dec 26, 2002 (Newsbytes via COMTEX) -- With Loudoun County`s two largest employers, United Airlines and WorldCom Inc., in Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and new layoffs announced at America Online Inc., it may be difficult to believe that Northern Virginia`s economy is looking up. But that`s what business leaders and economists are predicting for 2003.
The expected war in Iraq and the need to invest in new business technology could create thousands of jobs in a regional economy already benefiting from increased defense spending, economists say.
Anirban Basu, director of applied economics with the consulting arm of Towson University near Baltimore, said as many as 20,000 to 40,000 jobs could be created.
"By midyear 2003, people will be able to perceive a real difference in the character of this economy," Basu said. "It will be a much different year than the past two or three years."
Basu said much of the region`s technology, including computers and software, was purchased in the late 1990s and is past the average 3 1/2-year lifespan.
"Many companies developed a habit of replacing computers every three years," he said. "This now hasn`t happened for four years. There is pent-up demand in the business community for upgrading equipment, and we`ll see more robust business as a result."
Because there are so many high-tech companies in Northern Virginia, investment in new office technology will have a considerable impact, he said.
Larry Rosenstrauch, head of the Loudoun County Department of Economic Development, agreed. He said that although the area is going through a difficult period, it is a time of renewal.
Rosenstrauch said many good new technology products in the area will come to market as soon as their developers can devise a business plan. "The good news is, we know there are . . . technologies for the future," he said. "It`s just living through the mid-part while those technologies move themselves into a real business model" that is a challenge.
Martin Briley, head of Prince William County`s department of economic development, said several projects will come online in 2003, including an Eli Lilly and Co. insulin manufacturing plant that will employ 700 people. Seven private builders are adding 250,000 square feet of office space, and a building will be constructed at George Mason University`s campus, he said.
"We think the momentum has returned already with regard to some part of the market," Briley said. "We feel the new companies are coming back to the table. They didn`t kill projects, they put them on hold, and now we`re seeing them come back."
Stephen S. Fuller, a regional economist at George Mason, said unemployment claims dropped substantially this year, especially in the summer, as new jobs were created or companies began to hire. He said he expected the same thing to happen in 2003.
"In Fairfax, we`re at April 2001 [unemployment] levels, which was the period going into the slowdown," he said. "We`re not quite at the prerecession labor force but close to it."
He said Northern Virginia`s unemployment rate is 2.8 percent. The national rate is 6 percent.
Fuller said the outlook for 2003 is positive because of the mix of several factors, including a continued strong housing sector and stronger job growth. "The preconditions for a healthy economy are in place, so as we proceed through the first and second quarter, we`ll see more of it," he said.
Fuller said he expected that 40,000 new jobs would be created in the metropolitan area next year, with 22,000 in Northern Virginia. He acknowledged that the figures seemed high but said people are creating many of those jobs themselves.
The recovery could be slow, just as the downturn was, Fuller said. Northern Virginia`s economy peaked in November 2000, after the national economy peaked in December 1999, he said. The local economy did not hit bottom until December 2001.
Although slow, Fuller said he expected next year`s growth would be smooth and steady, unless, he said, "things blow up in Iraq."
Iraq is the wild card in economic forecasts.
Basu blamed the uncertainty of war for the wide range in the number of new jobs he predicted.
Federal government agencies such as the Defense Department are hiring more people as are local companies with government, especially defense, contracts. It is widely speculated that the new Department of Homeland Security will find a home in Northern Virginia, which local officials hope will bring many jobs.
But a war in Iraq also could mean higher oil prices, which could stall economic growth because of "a dramatic crash of consumer confidence," Fuller said.
"It looks like a good year, not a great year, but a good year," Fuller said.

Sprint Likely to Increase Calling Rates
NEW YORK, Dec 30, 2002 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- Be on the lookout for higher long-distance bills in 2003: Now that the nation`s two largest long-distance calling providers have announced rate increases in recent weeks, No. 3 Sprint Corp. seems likely to follow suit.
Spokeswoman Leslie Letts would not comment on whether Sprint plans to raise any fees or rates but acknowledged Monday that the company had taken note of the increases made by rivals AT&T Corp. and MCI, which is part of WorldCom Inc.
"We are always looking to evaluate our portfolio and make sure we stay even with the competitive landscape," Letts said.
MCI, the No. 2 long-distance carrier, announced increases on some calling plan fees and per-minute rates in late November and early December.
AT&T also said last week it will raise some fees as of Wednesday. For example, the monthly fee new subscribers will have to pay for seven-cents- minute long-distance calls will rise to $4.95 from $3.95.
AT&T, which criticized MCI`s recent increases as a sign of desperation brought on by WorldCom`s bankruptcy, is likely to raise other prices in 2003. But AT&T spokesman Gary Morgenstern said they would be "minor in comparison" to MCI`s moves.
These increases come even as the long-distance market figures to get even more competitive in 2003, as regional phone giants win government approval to offer long-distance to customers in more states.

Today a Long White Candlestick formed. Buyers were aggressive and the buying pressure was strong. Be careful, this may be a potential turning point!
