Korean Shipbuilders Set Record for Foreign Orders
Updated July.18,2004 18:15 KST
http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200407/200407180…
Korean shipbuilders such as Hyundai, Samsung, Daewoo set a new record in the amount of orders received from foreign countries. According to a report entitled "The trend of shipbuilding industry in first-half of 2004 released by Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy, domestic shipbuilders won a total of 9,060,000 tons in orders, representing 256 vessels, which is 16.4 percent more than last year`s first-half amount, 7,780,000 or 232 vessels.
This is a new record as the amount of orders in the first-half of the year, which is 90,000 tons more than the former record established in the second-half of last year. In particular, domestic shipbuilders won 29 out of 32 LNG ships and had 91 percent of total contracts.
Lee Byeong-ho, the vice president of Korea shipbuilders association said that Korea won 56.2 percent of new orders in the first quarter, which is almost two times higher than Japan. This is because Korean shipbuilders have the ability to build various vessels according to orders thanks to their own R&D technologies whereas Japanese shipbuilders build mainly standardized vessels, he added.
At the end of June, Korean shipbuilders` backlog of orders records 3,067 tons, or 847 vessels, 45.3 percent higher than last year`s June.

Korea Sets New Shipbuilding Contracts Record
http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200407/200407190…
Updated July.19,2004 14:25 KST
Korean shipbuilders enjoyed brisk businesses in the year`s first half, as increased global trade boosted demand for new vessels.
Figures by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy show Hyundai Heavy Industries and eight other Korean shipbuilders received orders amounting to some 9 million compensated gross tons, a measure of building time and manpower used per ton, in the January to June period. The figure is up by 16 percent from the same period last year.
Befitting Korea`s reputation as the world`s largest shipbuilding nation, local shipyards received construction orders for 29 of the 32 high value-added ships such as Liquefied Natural Gas carriers, with the remaining three going to Japan and France.
It`s no surprise that Korean vessel exporters have already surpassed their annual contract targets.
