THE Autonomous Bougainville Government (AGB) has called on the National Government to quickly implement a Papua New Guinea/ Solomon Island border post surveillance given the recent upheaval in the Solomons.
Vice President Joseph Watawi said since the Solomon Island was facing political instability, the ABG was concerned that the uprising would trigger an increase in the trade of firearms on the border.
Mr Watawi made the call after Buin police arrested a man from the Solomon Islands man who had attempted to sell an M16 rifle to Bougainville clients.
Würden allein die B'viller die Dinger exportieren könnte man ja ein Auge
Mr Watawi said many illegal crossers have been found crossing the PNG/Solomon border to sell and buy firearms in the region.
He said there was a real need for a border post surveillance and monitoring system to come into effect immediately.
“I emphasised that before land or any other issue can be discussed, a decision has to be made by the National Government since the border is a national issue” he said.
“The National Government should take responsibility to equip the joint border patrol with the necessary facilities to monitor the PNG/Solomon border.”
Mr Watawi said the National Government had the capacity to implement the PNG/Solomon border program and it should give the need special attention because of the problems in Bougainville and the Solomon Islands.

Dangerous crossing at Buka Passage
ALL ABOARD: These youths from Gohi village of Selau District in the northern tip of Bougainville were caught preparing to transport an old model jeep body on top of a banana boat across the Buka Passage. To any outside observer, it was a risky and scary exercise but the boys made it safely across the fast-flowing Buka Passage current — along with their cargo. The youths from the surrounding area said they were taking their prized cargo (the old jeep body) to Kokopau and would fit an engine to the body. At last report, the vehicle had stared to resemble a completed off-road vehicle and should be cruising around in the Bonus Plantation area soon.

K20million deal bad for Bougainville
THE Autonomous Bougainville Government had mortgage the future of Bougainville for K20 million, Mining Minister Sam Akoitai said yesterday.
He said in Parliament during question time that the K20 million deal between ABG and a mining company was a very serious issue.
He claimed that the firm had no track record in mining, and called on government institutions like the Ombudsman Commission to check on the arrangement, which Mr Akoitai said was outside of normal government procedures.
He was responding to questions from the Member for North Bougainville James Togel about the future of Panguna mine and the recent signing of an agreement between ABG and a Canadian company.
“I agree that Bougainville is worth more than K20 million, which is a bad deal,” Mr Akoitai said.
He also confirmed yesterday that the National Executive Council had approved a review of the Bougainville mining agreement.
He said the review was not to reopen the mine but to see where the problem was that contributed to the Bougainville conflict.
Mr Akoitai stressed that the decision to reopen the mine was with the people of Bougainville and ABG, and not the national government.
He said the Bougainville copper agreement between the state and the company prior to independence did not involve the landowners and provincial government.
The review will now involve these two parties.
He maintained that this was only a consultation process.
