Russia`s metals giant Norilsk Nickel(GMKN) said on Wednesday it had bought a controlling stake in a company developing a large gold deposit in the country`s far east.

Reuters : Russia’s Highland Gold Mining, backed by foreign investors, said yesterday it would soon add a new a mine to its operations in Siberia in a move likely to stir Western interest in Russian gold extraction.

Highland, the fourth-largest gold firm operating in Russia, expects the Darasun mine in the remote Chita region to produce 40 000 oz (1,24 t) of gold in 2004 and reach annual production of about 120 000 oz in 2005.

Highland`s shareholders include South Africa`s Harmony Gold and Britain`s Fleming Family & Partners.

Its main Mnogovershinnoye mine, previously controlled by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, raised production by 9,8% year-on-year in the first half of 2003 to 90 100 oz, Highland said in a statement.

The mine produced a total of 178 000 oz last year.

By comparison, Russia`s top gold producer, Norilsk Nickel, produced about 25 t of gold in 2002 and hopes to raise production to 90 t.

Highland said this year it would spend about $22-million on the Darasun project, which has an estimated total of about 800 000 oz of gold in proven and probable reserves.

The Darasun shafts were initially flooded in the early years of the 20th century. The Soviet Union re-opened the mines and about four-million ounces of gold had been extracted before operations stopped three years ago, industry experts say.

Russia produced about 170 t of gold last year.

Official data obtained by Reuters showed that overall ore extraction rose 3,8% in the first half of this year, but the Gold Industrialists Union, a lobby group, said in July pure gold output was nearly unchanged.

Russia remains the world`s largest unexploited region for gold mining, but crime and complicated legislation have kept foreign mining companies from investing.
