      Guten Tag,

es geht nicht nur um Öl.

Falklands : Gold Prospectors on the Loose
Submitted by Falkland Islands News Network (Juanita Brock) 23.01.2003 (Article Archived on 06.02.2003)
Now that prospectors are looking for gold in them there hills, FIBS`s Lee Hazell talks with the Pick and shovel man

      GOLD PROSPECTORS ON THE LOOSE:

      Interview by Lee Hazell (FIBS)

It’s time to stake your claim and get out your gold pans. The Falklands Mineral Joint Venture, which comprises of Cambridge Mineral Resources, FIC and Falkland Islands Mineral Development, have started its 2003 exploration work on the onshore prospecting licence. Derek Reives (DR) tells us a bit more about it, starting with past work that’s been carried out.

DR: Basically, all the past exploration that’s been done here has mainly been more low key sampling in the streams and creeks, tracing back the minerals just to look for the possible source of these. That was basically with a shovel in the creek digging and then at some later stages with a mini excavator just digging a few more substantial samples.

      LH: Did you find much?

DR: Basically, the Falklands have never been explored for minerals so what we are finding can be classed as anomalous but we have found what we class as significant, basically gold mineralisation and we’ve also detected some later stage background minerals such as platinum and palladium.

LH: What work are you going to be doing in the next part?

DR: Well, each level of exploration basically increases the level of work that you do. And, also the expenditure that you have. We are going to basically follow up on a source of the gold, which we think may exist. That’s going to involve actually getting through the peat cover and actually exposing the rock that’s carrying the gold. And, that will involve some large trenching, opening up a way for me to get down into these trenches, which will be about 7 metres deep. Then I will sample the unit, map it and record the geological features.

LH: Where are you going to be working? What sort of areas?

DR: Activities will be quite visible this year in terms of some of the areas we will be working. Basically we will be starting in the vicinity of Swan Inlet and begin working our way down. The trenches will be 5km apart and we will work our way down to the Port Sussex area and reverse and go from Swan Inlet towards MPA.

LH: Is it mainly just around riverbed areas?

DR: Yes. The actual unit that appears to be carrying the gold is actually a very soft rock, so it’s weathered and actually forms the valleys. So basically we will be down in the low areas rather than up in the higher ground.

LH: What sort of things can you see in the future?

DR: Basically the trench we are working is called the Shepherds Prospect. We have started to give these things names. The Shepherds Prospect is one which is accessible so the future would be, if it’s a positive result this time, we will then probably swing into a more full evaluation mode which involved a specialised drilling of hundreds and hundreds of holes to try and build up enough data to better start thinking about reserves. From there, we know how many tonnes we’ve got – x million at a certain grade of gold. We then can basically plan a mine and when we get a mine. From there we go look at the numbers in terms of the cost of building a plant. If the numbers work out that a business is going to be profitable, we will then proceed further. From there it goes into talking with the Government, doing a formal environmental impact statement and the whole works. That time-frame could go from two years or more for a full evaluation, to where you get the final approval from the Government to actually start the construction of the plant. Actually, it’s quite a long process. We could end up spending Millions and Millions of Dollars evaluating this and the value expert could come back and say it’s not profitable. It’s a high risk game. The results thus far are encouraging, so we hope to take that next stage based on results mid year.

      Sehr spannend !

      Good luck

Vom Juni letzten Jahres und lesenswert:

Falkland Islands Holdings runs a large proportion of the commercial activities on the eponymous South Atlantic islands. That covers the local garage, the famous Upland Goose Hotel, a fishing agency, a shipping service and financial services on the islands.

The results from these activities seldom vary much from year to year. FIH turnover was £12m in the year to March 1998 and was £11.4m in the year just reported. Pre-tax profits were £1.26m then and were £1.03m in the latest 12 months. Earnings per share have been equally flat.

David Hudd, the chairman brought in by 19% shareholder Leonard Licht, argues that the islands` economy is relatively robust and quite wealthy. The group is aiming to increase its market share - it already dominates the Falklands retail market - by such initiatives as pushing Waitrose products through its main retail outlet in the capital, Stanley.

But even Hudd would admit that the real excitement lies elsewhere. The group is in pursuit of both oil prospects offshore and minerals onshore. It is presumably these hopes that in part attracted such illustrious names as Licht, former leading light at Mercury Asset Management and now chairman of the Hg venture capital group, and Hillsdown Holdings founder Sir Harry Solomon to the group. They joined the board in 1999 as non-executives and between them now hold just short of 30% of the equity.

Other big holders of the stock include blue chip City investors AMVESCAP, with over 8%, and Jupiter Asset Management, which holds just short of 4%. More interestingly, a vehicle for Jersey-based investor David Kirsch called Channel Hotels & Properties has been building a stake recently and now holds 8.1% of the shares.

So far, it would appear that such corporate manoeuvrings have been as futile as at other one-time wonder stocks. The possibility of oil being found offshore excited a number of groups, including Shell, Amerada Hess and Colin Phipps` Desire, to explore to the north of the islands during the late 1990s. However, nothing came of it.

Then last year a consortium consisting of FIH and two Australian companies, Global Petroleum and Hardman Resources, were granted ten offshore exploration licences in the southern area of the islands. This is said to have similar geology to that of the Exxon discovery. At the moment, the consortium is investigating seismic data to determine whether to take exploration further. Any drilling could be years away.

Meanwhile, the hunt continues on the islands themselves for other minerals. Despite the discovery of "particle gold", the group`s latest missive to shareholders says that such finds have not been in commercially-attractive quantities.

The group has joint-venture partners in the shape of Cambridge Mineral Resources and Global Petroleum again and reckons that other prospects are worth pursuing. However, Hudd is looking for new partners to take the project further as its existing partners appear to have more pressing interests elsewhere.

The main minerals being sought are gold and diamonds, although FIH has also talked of high-grade titanium ore and mineral sands containing rutile, zircon, garnet as being present on the islands. Nothing looks imminent on this score either, though.

Finally, Hudd is also looking to use FIH shares, which moved to the Alternative Investment Market earlier this year, for a UK acquisition. He is seeking something in the service sector, with strong cash flow, to take advantage of FIH`s "high-powered board".

Hudd is clearly enthusiastic about the prospects. It is harder for outsiders to see the promise so clearly. The shares at 185p, unchanged today, remain pretty much at the level they reached just after it emerged that Licht and Solomon were joining the board in November 1999. Yet, trading on a historic price-earnings ratio of 16 and yielding 3%, they are not attractive on fundamental grounds. It would have to be optimistic, or patient, investor who buys in now on the back of the minerals prospects or that the board will shortly transform the company. Unattractive.

Share prices can go down as well as up. The past is not necessarily a guide to future performance and the marketability of some shares can make them difficult to sell.

      Good luck

      Hallo

      http://www.rigzone.com/news/article.asp?a_id=14172

      viel Spass beim lesen

ots news: Börse Berlin-Bremen / Falkland Islands Holding weckt Kursfantasie
