AVANT to Pursue Development of Avian Flu Vaccine

NEEDHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 14, 2005--AVANT Immunotherapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVAN - News) today announced that it has formed a research team to focus on development of an avian flu vaccine utilizing in part AVANT`s proprietary bacterial vectoring technologies and VitriLife® preservation processes.

"The combination of conserved antigens together with our existing vaccine technologies could lead to an avian flu vaccine with product characteristics ideal for mass vaccinations: safe and effective, single-dose, oral, storable at room temperature," said Una S. Ryan, Ph.D., AVANT`s President and Chief Executive Officer. "We are dedicating resources today to pursue this challenge, however, an effective response to pandemic flu requires the involvement of many parties - governments, international organizations and vaccine manufacturers," she continued.
Dr. Ryan further stated, "the Paul Royalty transaction, which closed earlier this year and is expected to generate $50 million of funding in a twelve-month period from the monetization of future Rotarix® royalties, will provide us with the funding flexibility to pursue opportunities like this one on a strategic basis."
