AMD-ATI relationship with TSMC and UMC not to change
Monica Chen, Shanghai; Steve Shen, DigiTimes.com [Wednesday 23 August 2006]
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) expects its cooperation with IBM and Chartered Semiconductor, as well as ATI Technologies' business relations with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC), to remain unchanged following AMD's acquisition of ATI in October, said AMD company president and Chief Operating Officer (COO) Dirk Meyer recently in Shanghai.
With AMD having its own foundry facilities and additional capacity support from IBM and Chartered Semiconductor, market sources speculate that AMD-ATI may gradually reduce its wafer-start orders with TSMC and UMC following the completion of the AMD-ATI merger.
Meyer dismissed such speculations and stressed that the AMD-ATI deal won't affect the status quo of ATI's OEM business relations with TSMC or UMC, and that the production of ATI's graphics chips and IGPs will continue to be subcontracted to the two companies. Meyer made the remarks on the sidelines of the launch of the company's new R&D center in Shanghai.
Taiwan-based motherboard makers generally agreed with Meyer's statement as AMD's own foundry capacity currently is barely enough to support its product development and the company has no additional facilities to accommodate ATI's products.
However, local motherboard makers still argued that the relationship between AMD-ATI and TSMC, and UMC, would undergo dramatic changes if AMD sufficiently expand its production capacity in the future.
Meyer also disagreed with a market rumor that projected that AMD is expected to ship a total of 46 million desktop-use CPUs in 2006. He said that the total shipment volumes should not as high as the market had anticipated.
However, with support of its customers, including the Lenovo Group, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Fujitsu Siemens and recently Dell, AMD is confident to capture one-third of the global x86 industry in 2008 and to have 40% of the server CPU market worldwide by 2009, Meyer stated.

AMD-ATI-Beziehung mit TSMC und UMC
Monica Chen, Shanghai; Steve Shen, DigiTimes.com [Mittwoch, der 23. August 2006]

AMD's Next Generation Microarchitecture Preview: from K8 to K8L
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/amd-k8l.html
Conclusion
The future processor from AMD, currently known as K8L, will be the next step in the evolution of the K8 series. The improvements we learned about so far such as increased to 32 bytes instruction sample, improved branch prediction algorithm, introduction of out-of-order reading, will eliminate a few bottlenecks and improve the integer performance. The expansion of SSE instruction sets will help improve the performance significantly in applications dealing with heavy floating-point or integer calculations using SSE instructions, where K8L will be able not only to compete successfully but even to outperform Conroe. The inability to decode and retire 4 commands per clock cycle in some cases may result into tangible performance gaps in integer applications. However, it may not be of that much importance in most cases, because the typical instruction execution pace in real integer applications does not exceed 2-2.5 instructions per cycle because of the data dependence. K8L performance may also be increased in other ways without raising the number of decoding and retirement pipes. Here I am talking about increasing the scheduler queue depth, reducing the number of false dependences (thanks to mechanisms similar to stack engine) and performing out-of-order reading skipping the writes. We do not know today if AMD will be able to implement these features in their new processor. We also do not know if they will modify the caching and prefetch system. However, this is very important for successful competition of the new K8L against Conroe processor in the entire range of tasks.
The successors to K8 architecture require a lot of work. They need not just to compete with Intel solutions, but to outperform them, and that is why their architecture needs to be free from the K8 bottlenecks and has to be able to decode and process up to four instructions per clock. Alas, developing and perfecting a new core is a tremendously laborious and time-consuming task. Even if a new architecture is under development at AMD, it will hardly become market-ready in the next couple of years. It’s hard to tell what this rapidly developing industry will have become like by that time!

Intel will seinen Highend-Xeon Tulsa am 29. August offiziell vorstellen.

Wenns weiter
