Construction delayed at Cloud Break
Angela Kean
Monday, January 14, 2008
FORTESCUE Metals Group is uncertain of when construction will resume on a processing plant after work was suspended following the death of a mine worker at its Cloud Break mine in Western Australia's Pilbara region last week.
Construction ceased on the plant, which is part of the $A2.7 billion iron ore project, when 26-year-old newlywed Nigel Taylor, who was working for United Group as a rigger, was killed on Friday after his head became jammed between a steel beam and an elevated work platform at the mine.
"It's one small part of the processing plant where work has stopped," FMG spokesman Cameron Morse told Bloomberg.
Morse told the news service construction work was continuing at other areas of the mine, rail and port, but he was unable to comment on when work would resume on the plant.
The newswire also reported that FMG revealed it was still on target to ship its first load of iron ore by May.
The accident has drawn heavy criticism from unions, particularly the Construction, Forestry, Mining, and Energy Union which is claiming workers are under pressure to meet unrealistic deadlines.
"There are problems with scaffolding, problems with riggers and there was no job safety analysis," CFMEU WA assistant state secretary Joe McDonald told The Australian newspaper.
The Australian Workers Union is calling for the development of a safety plan for the minesite.
MiningNews.net was unable to get in contact with an FMG spokesperson for further comment at time of writing.
