Tesla takes a large deferred tax valuation allowance (FC: ~Wertberichtigung für latente Steuern), but how that connects to per-plant profitability takes some explaining—buckle up.
A deferred tax valuation allowance, essentially, reduces the value of a deferred tax asset. And a deferred tax asset means the company won’t pay taxes in the future because there are tax deductions for losses incurred in prior years.
But a company will write down the value allowance if they don’t think they can use all of the deferred tax asset. Put another way, Tesla is saying it won’t make enough money fast enough to use all its past losses to offset any taxes due on future income.
What’s more, Tesla’s tax valuation allowance looks to be caused by losses from its U.S. operations, according to the annual report. The losses from U.S. operations grew in 2021 even as Tesla generated record profits on the whole. If Tesla’s U.S. operations aren’t profitable, and the overall company is profitable, then China must be very, very profitable.
Writing down the allowance seems to indicate that Tesla’s U.S. operations won’t be solidly profitable in the future, according to Johnson. While it might not be an immediate cause for worry, it is something investors might want to keep an eye on.
Some of the losses from prior years can only offset state taxes, explained accounting expert Robert Willens. Tesla might not generate enough profits in, say, its former home state of California to use prior losses to offset income taxes. (Tesla relocated to Texas in 2021).
Willens also pointed out that some of the losses are due to huge charges related to stock-based compensation. CEO Elon Musk exercised roughly $25 billion in stock options in 2021. He paid about $6 for stock worth more than $1,000 a share. From a tax perspective, those gains count as an expense for the company in 2021. The losses looked to be booked in the U.S., according to the way they are recorded in the annual report.
Also, any losses from Tesla’s U.S.-based solar roof business can likely only be used to offset future income from that solar roof business. That business might not achieve high levels of profitability.
So while accounting in the annual report helps understand what’s going on in Tesla’s U.S. operations, it doesn’t paint a full picture of geographic profitability.
