Analysis: Auto firms race to secure non-Chinese graphite for EVs as shortages loom
EVs to account for more than half of mined graphite demand
Automakers seek supply from new Western graphite miners
Graphite biggest component by weight in EV battery
FACTBOX: Graphite companies and offtake deals read more

LONDON, June 21 (Reuters) - Automakers, including Tesla and Mercedes, are rushing to lock in graphite supply from outside dominant producer China, as demand for electric vehicle (EV) batteries outpaces other uses for the mineral for the first time due to soaring EV sales.

Auto firms have been slow to plan for graphite shortages, focusing mainly on better-known battery materials lithium and cobalt, even though graphite is the largest battery component by weight.

Now, car makers are knocking at the doors of new producers, such as Madagascar and Mozambique, as this year EVs are forecast to account for more than 50% of the natural graphite market for the first time, according to consultancy Project Blue.

Shortages of material produced outside of China will be even more acute as legislation in the United States and Europe aims to cut reliance on China for critical minerals.

"Automakers are in a real bind because there's been no investment in Western graphite," said Mark Thompson, founder and managing director of Australia's Talga Group Ltd (TLG.AX), which plans to launch production next year in Sweden.

Each EV on average needs 50-100 kg of graphite in its battery pack for the anodes, the negative electrodes of a battery, about twice the amount of lithium.

Zitat von Oginvest: Aus dem "Flyer" "Is all graphite created equal? Not all graphite is created equal"

Automakers are seeking supply from Western graphite miners

Reuters reports that EV manufacturers are actively seeking alternative graphite sources outside of China. The demand for graphite in EV batteries has surpassed all other uses for the mineral, due to the skyrocketing EV sales.

Graphite holds the distinction of being the largest battery component in terms of weight. Unfortunately, the automotive industry has been slow to address potential graphite shortages. Anticipated graphite shortages range around a global supply deficit of 777,000 tonnes by 2030 according to Project Blue projections.

Currently, China dominates the global natural graphite industry, producing 61% of the world's flake supply and 98% of the final processed material used for battery anodes, according to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence. This Chinese control of the market makes it difficult for automakers who want to qualify for EV subsidies under the US Inflation Reduction Act bans critical minerals that are mined, processed, or recycled in a "foreign entity of concern".

Hence, EV manufacturers are accelerating the pace in securing volumes to limit their exposure to China's dominance, ensure their eligibility to Western cleantech incentives and cut their carbon footprint thanks to greener natural graphite sources.

Northern Graphite Signs Land Agreement for Baie-Comeau Battery Anode Material Plant, Advances Mine-to-Market Strategy

Ottawa, Ontario, June 29, 2023: Northern Graphite Corporation (NGC:TSX-V, NGPHF:OTCQB, FRA:0NG, XSTU:0NG) (the “Company” or “Northern”) is pleased to announce that it has signed a letter of intent (“LOI”) with the city of Baie-Comeau to purchase land for a 200,000 tonne per year Battery Anode Material (“BAM”) plant as it advances plans to supply anode material to lithium-ion battery manufacturing plants throughout North America. The LOI, which is subject to financing and receipt of regulatory approvals, gives Northern the right to purchase a 1.2 million m2 property, approximately 300 acres, in the Baie-Comeau port industrial zone, with access to municipal services and infrastructure, for US$1.2 million.

“This is a big step forward in our strategy to be an integrated, sustainable, cost-effective mine-to-market supplier to the booming EV battery manufacturing market and a key player in North America’s critical minerals strategy,” said Northern Chief Executive Officer Hugues Jacquemin. “From here everything flows. We now know where the facility will be located, how much power it will require and where the power needs to go and can proceed with all the design and logistical work required to begin construction.”

There is effectively no capacity in the west to convert graphite mine concentrates into anode material and the EV manufacturers are depending on project proponents such as Northern to fill the void and supply existing and planned lithium-ion battery manufacturing plants throughout North America. The Baie-Comeau BAM plant will be one of the world’s largest such conversion facilities and will process concentrates from Northern’s mines as well as from other producers that will be coming online. The plant will have one of the lowest CO2 footprints in the industry due to its access to green, hydroelectric power with pricing that is among the most competitive in the world.

      ...

“The evaluation of options, and the selection and securing of the industrial site set the stage for the technical, social and economic studies needed to implement plans for one of the largest suppliers of battery materials in Quebec and North America,’’ said Guy Simard, director of industrial development for ID Manicouagan.

Baie-Comeau is located on the shores of the St. Lawrence River, approximately 400 km north-east of Quebec City in the Cote-Nord economic region and has direct access to the rest of North America via road, rail and a deep water, all-season port. The BAM plant, which the Company expects the first phase would cost in the range of $500 million, and which the Company would target for completion in 2026, will be subject to financing, regulatory approvals and certain other conditions, and is eligible for assistance under programs offered by the province of Québec, the Canadian and U.S. governments, as well as other assistance by the Manicouagan region and potential Plan Nord incentives.

Northern Graphite Clarifies Namibian Export Ban on Unprocessed Critical Minerals
Ottawa, Ontario, June 22, 2023: Northern Graphite Corporation (NGC:TSX-V, NGPHF:OTCQB, FRA:0NG, XSTU:0NG) (the “Company” or “Northern”) comments on news reports that Namibia, home to the Company’s Okanjande graphite project, has banned the export of unprocessed lithium and other critical minerals.

“We have consulted with the Ministry of Mines and Energy of Namibia, and we have been assured that this ban only applies to unprocessed ore and as such should have no bearing on our plans to mine and process graphite bearing resources into concentrate at Okanjande,” said Northern Graphite Chief Executive Officer Hugues Jacquemin.

“This prohibition applies strictly to unprocessed critical minerals. Value should be added at least up to the concentrate, carbonate/hydroxide level,” said Mr. Andreas Simon, a spokesperson for Namibia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy in a statement provided to Northern.

The Okanjande project, due to come back on line in 2024, will involve mining and processing graphite bearing material and exporting concentrates to supply traditional markets as well as to the fast-growing electric vehicle industry.

NGC wurde vor einigen Monaten durch eine Acquisition, von der Imerys SA zum Produzenten:

May 2, 2022: Northern Graphite Corporation (NGC:TSX-V, NGPHF:OTCQB, FRA:ONG, XSTU:ONG) (the “Company” or “Northern”) announces that it has closed its previously announced acquisition (December 2, 2021) of the producing Lac des Iles graphite mine (“LDI”) in Quebec from a subsidiary of Imerys SA (Imerys and its subsidiaries, “Imerys”) and the Okanjande graphite deposit/Okorusu processing plant in Namibia from a subsidiary of Imerys and its joint venture partner (collectively, the “Acquisition”). The Acquisition was financed through US$36 million in debt, royalty and stream financing provided by funds managed by Sprott Resource Streaming and Royalty Corp. (collectively, “Sprott”) and a CDN$23 million equity offering lead by Sprott Capital Partners LP. Sprott invested CDN$3.75 million in the equity offering and Imerys has received US$4 million in equity, on the same terms as the equity offering, as partial payment of the purchase price. > > https://www.wallstreet-online.de/diskussion/1316291-131-140/…
