Sweden’s H2 Green Steel lines up Vale, Rio Tinto for iron ore supply

Swedish metal and hydrogen company H2 Green Steel (H2GS) said on Wednesday it has signed multi-year deals with Rio Tinto and Vale for the supply of iron ore pellets from Canada and Brazil.

H2GS, which plans to build a low-carbon steel plant in Boden in northern Sweden and to start production in 2025, said the contracts with the two miners will help the company convince investors and lenders to commit to financing of its project.

The Swedish company will use a production process known as direct reduced iron (DRI) to cut CO2 emissions by up to 1,900 kilograms per tonne of finished steel compared to traditional blast furnaces, according to an H2GS spokesperson.

Vale loses bid to block BHP's London lawsuit in Brazil dam case

LONDON (Reuters) - Vale on Monday lost a bid to block fellow mining giant BHP Group's bid to have it share potential liability in a 36 billion-pound ($46 billion) London lawsuit over Brazil's worst environmental disaster.

BHP, which denies liability, applied in December to have Vale join the case and contribute to damages if they are found liable to the claimants.

The company argued that Vale should share in any potential liability because BHP Brasil and Vale both owned 50% of Samarco.

China Baowu wants new models of cooperation with Vale

BEIJING, Aug 3 (Reuters) - The world’s largest steelmaker China Baowu Steel Group Corporation has held talks with Brazilian iron ore miner Vale on potential opportunities for future cooperation, according to an update on its WeChat account on Thursday.

Hu Wangming, chairman of the group, held a face-to-face meeting with Eduardo Bartolomeo, Vale’s chief executive officer, at Baowu’s headquarter Shanghai.

Hu said Baowu and Vale need to explore new models of future cooperation to achieve sustainability in the steel value chain.

Both sides also discussed cooperation in investment in mineral resources as well as the research and development of the low-carbon metallurgical technology, it said without giving further details.

Saudi pays rich but logical price for Vale metals

Saudi Arabia’s latest flashy acquisition makes a certain degree of sense. The kingdom’s $780 billion Public Investment Fund and mining company Saudi Arabian Mining (Ma’aden) are buying one-tenth of $66 billion Brazilian miner Vale’s base metals arm. The price is far from a bargain, but is logical given the geopolitical land grab taking place in critical minerals.

Together with U.S. investment firm Engine No. 1, the acquirers are paying $3.4 billion for a 13% equity stake in Vale Base Metals, which produces mostly nickel and copper. The implied enterprise value of $26 billion is 10.6 times the EBITDA that analysts expect the base metals arm will generate this year, according to Visible Alpha data. That compares to the 9.4 times average that peers Freeport-McMoRan, Southern Copper, Antofagasta and First Quantum trade at. Freeport, one of the world’s top copper producers, only trades at 8.2 times this year’s expected EBITDA.

In other words, Saudi is doing what its riches often allow it to do – paying over the odds. But it has some basis to do so. Copper and nickel companies are in investors’ sights, thanks to the race to secure metals used in batteries and other clean-energy technologies that will be integral to the energy transition. In 2022, the prices paid for base metals acquisitions jumped 65% relative to the year before, according to S&P Global. While owning a minority of a bit of Vale limits the influence Saudi can have, it also means the premium Riyadh has to pay is probably smaller than it would have been if it had lobbed in a bid for the whole of the base metals unit.

Vale doesn't rule out IPO or merger of base metals unit ahead

July 28, 2023 - Brazilian miner Vale does not rule out an initial public offering (IPO) or merger of its base metals unit in the future, but the focus for now is on execution and accelerating growth, chief executive Eduardo Bartolomeo said on Friday.

Vale announced on Thursday deals to sell a 13% stake in the business for $3.4 billion to Saudi Arabia’s Ma’aden and US firm Engine No. 1, as part of it strategy to unlock more value from its nickel and copper assets.

“For now, let’s focus on closing the gaps on execution and accelerating growth. And then, two or three years down the road, the optionalities will be all in our hands,” Bartolomeo told a conference call with analysts when asked about the matter.
