Vale is starting to turn mine waste into construction materials

One of the world’s biggest mining companies is getting into the construction business.

Vale is starting to extract sand from material left over from iron ore processing to supply civil construction projects in Brazil. At the same time, the Rio de Janeiro-based mining giant is developing a type of low-emission geopolymer cement that will use the mining-waste sand, said Rogerio Nogueira, head of ferrous marketing.

Vale’s so-called sustainable sand and green cement initiatives are part of the mining industry’s push to clean up its own operations and supply chains as the world battles to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The plan is to spin off successful initiatives in a type of corporate venture capital, Nogueira said in an interview.

The cement project is still in development while the sand operation has begun with a modest 250 000 metric tons before ramping up to at least 1 million tons next year. Vale could potentially produce 50 million tons, which is about what is contained in its iron-ore tailings. That compares with Brazil’s more than 300-million ton sand market and the global industry of about 40-billion tons, most of which comes from illegal dredging

“Sand is a critical commodity to the world and one that has a lot of impact on the environment because of river dredging,” Nogueira said.

Beyond cement and road pavement, Vale is looking at other uses for the sand such as ceramics. Universities in Australia and Switzerland are studying possible applications of sand made from mineral ores, using Vale’s as a case study.

Vale expects iron-ore prices to rise after Winter Olympics

NEW YORK – Mining company Vale believes iron-ore prices will increase after the Winter Olympics in China scheduled for February as Beijing is likely to allow more steel producers to regain production capacity.

China's government has been asking plants in several sectors, including steel, to reduce production to cut air pollution before the sporting event.

Vale's VP for Strategy and Business Transformation Luciano Siani told reporters after a meeting with investors at the New York Stock Exchange on Monday that he expects industrial activity in China to grow once the Games are over, boosting iron-ore prices.

Siani, however, does not see a large price gain, saying the tonne of steel's raw material is likely to stay between $90 and $120 or $130.

Spot prices of iron ore with 62% iron content for delivery to China, compiled by SteelHome consultancy, rose $3 to $105 a tonne on Monday.

Prices had been falling heavily from a peak of above $230/tonne in May.

Siani also talked about the future of some business units at the company, such as coal and base metals.

He said that discussions about the sale of the coal business are progressing and that an announcement is likely around the beginning of 2022.

About the base metals unit, the executive said the company is working to make it more independent from the rest of the company, so Vale could have the option to sell it if it decides for that path.

But Siani said a decision regarding base metals will not come before 2023.

SAO PAULO, Nov 29 (Reuters) - Brazilian miner Vale SA on Monday lowered the ceiling for its 2021 iron ore production outlook to 320 million tonnes from a previous 335 million, while leaving the lower end of the forecast range at 315 million tonnes.

The company, which did not provide an explanation for the lowered guidance, also said in a securities filing that its 2022 iron ore output is expected to reach 320 to 335 million tonnes.

Vale sees its iron ore production capacity at 370 million tonnes by the end of 2022, versus 341 million tonnes at the end of this year, while its long term goal is to reach a production capacity of 400 to 450 million tonnes.

The Brazilian mining giant, which is due to brief investors on at an annual presentation in New York, added it sees its capital expenditure (capex) totaling $5.8 billion in 2022. The company also said it expects to invest an average of $5 billion to $6 billion in the coming years, but did not provide a specific timeframe.

Vale estimates its nickel production at 175,000-190,000 tonnes in 2022, while its copper output should reach 330,000-335,000 tonnes in the same period. (Reporting by Gabriel Araujo; Editing by Christian Plumb)

Brazil police recommend homicide, environmental charges in Vale dam disaster

RIO DE JANEIRO - November 26, 2021 - Brazilian police have recommended multiple criminal charges against miner Vale SA and Germany's TUV SUD for their role in a 2019 dam burst that killed 270 people and caused extensive environmental damage, according to a statement on Friday.

hallo fraggle,

ich will mal so sagen:
ich bin seit genau 10 jahren bei vale. habe alle höhen und tiefen dieses wertes - vor allem nach den fürchterlichen betriebskatastrophen (2015/2018) - mitgemacht.
eingestiegen bin ich mit 1670 stk zu 12,40€ in 2011.
da vale aber immer gute dividende zahlt, bin ich dabei geblieben und habe immer die hälfte der gewinne neu bei vale investiert. jetzt liegt mein einstigeskurs bei 10,8€ und ich bin schon bei 5200 anteilen. 2015 u 2018 gab's natürlich zu recht nichts.
aber dieses jahr bekam ich schon gut 7600 € dividende. für mich als kleinanleger zahlt es sich so langsam aus, diesen wert lange zu halten. ich werde auch immer wieder dazu kaufen.
will also sagen, ich bin hier nur wegen der dividende so lange investiert.
ansonsten ist dieser wert sehr von der weltkonjunktur abhängig. von 2€ bis 27€ alles mitgemacht.

na? weiterhin verunsichert? war nicht meine absicht. waren nur mal so meine gedanken zu diesem wert.
