Datacraft Asia stays on growth path with solid first half performance
Company posts 38% pre-tax profit increase on 42% growth in revenues
Singapore, 20 January 2000. . . Main board listed Datacraft Asia, the region`s leading
communications and networks systems integrator, has reported solid growth for the first half
of financial year 2000. For the first half ended 31 December 1999, the Datacraft Asia Group
increased its revenues to US$168.1 million, and its operating profit before tax to US$17.0
million, up 42% and 38% respectively over the same period last financial year. Profit after
tax and minorities rose by 26% to US$12.3 million over the same period last financial year.
"Lingering economic problems in certain Asian markets have made this a challenging six months
but this has not stopped us from moving aggressively to exploit future high-growth
opportunities," said Des Althorp, chairman of Datacraft Asia. "Thanks to our geographical
diversity, sound management, and inherent strength in enterprise data communications and
Internet infrastructure, we were once again able to hedge our risks and outpace the market.
"We are very pleased to have entered Korea and Japan at exactly the right time. Our acquisitions
in these two countries are already paying off handsomely and Korea, in particular, has
contributed significantly to our first half results. Services revenues continued in their
upward trend, with notably strong increases coming from outsourcing and training."
"The new millennium offers unprecedented opportunities for us. We are seeing the convergence
of Internet content providers and traditional telecom service providers, while many companies
are accelerating network upgrades and expansion to take their business online. These trends
have generated tremendous demand for new business infrastructure built around Internet
technologies. Combining our expertise and proven track record in data networking, with our
newly acquired e-business integration and consulting capabilities, we believe that Datacraft
is well positioned to become the region`s leading e-systems integrator." "We have already made
a rapid start in building our e-systems integration capability though new acquisitions and
alliances. Given our sound fundamentals and strategy, I am confident of achieving the new
goals we have set for ourselves and in propelling the company to greater growth in this new
millennium."
Datacraft Asia`s key achievements for first half of financial year 2000 include:
Regional Expansion
Datacraft Asia continued to expand its regional footprint aggressively with more acquisitions.
Datacraft now operates from 56 offices in 13 countries. Datacraft makes its foray into Japan
Following its successful foray into Korea, the company went on to establish a strategic foothold
in Japan with two major investments. In its biggest investment to date, Datacraft Asia entered
the region`s largest IT market in July 1999 by taking a controlling interest in a Japanese
networking systems integrator NetWAVE Inc. for US$37.5 million. The investment gives Datacraft
a 75 per cent stake in NetWAVE, as well as immediate market access to a portfolio of blue-chip
Japanese customers, many of whom have extensive operations in other parts of Asia Pacific. In
November 1999, Datacraft made a second investment in Japan by buying a 75 per cent majority
stake in PTS Co Ltd for US$23.6 million. PTS, which provides systems integration services, IT
consulting, IT training and Hotmail helpdesk services. PTS strengthens Datacraft`s services
capabilities in Japan and complements NetWAVE`s existing business. The investment will also
provide Datacraft with an established customer base of multinational companies.
Acquisition of e-commerce company
Datacraft took a decisive step into e-commerce consulting by acquiring a 60 per cent stake in
Hongkong-based I Square Solutions Limited. The US$5.25 million deal gives Datacraft access to
a team of 35 e-systems integration specialists with a strong track record of delivering
successful solutions based on Internet technologies to enterprise customers. I Square`s service
offerings encompass Internet business consulting; business-to-business and business-to-consumer
e-commerce solutions; business process and workflow; and customer relationship management. It
integrates third-party products and develops systems by using a component-based infrastructure.
Since it was established in 1998, I Square has completed more than 30 major assignments.
Clients include prominent Hong Kong enterprises and multinational companies such as BP Amoco,
Philip Morris, Kuehne & Nagel and Oriental Daily, as well as HK government departments such
as the Housing Authority, Office of Telecommunications Authority and Employee Retraining Board.
Millennium Strategy
For the 21st Century, Datacraft has unveiled a business development blueprint to capitalise on
the digital economy for rapid growth and increased market share. Focusing on the two key growth
areas: e-business systems integration and the "new-world" IP (Internet Protocol) based public
network infrastructure, the Millennium Strategy underlines the company`s plan to position
itself as a service driven, high value-add company. Datacraft targets to derive 50 per cent of
its business from services and software offerings by 2002.
For the e-business enterprise market, Datacraft has developed a programme branded as e-Net that
provides secured enterprise networks for business-to-business e-commerce, alongside a
comprehensive range of e-commerce solutions.
Public Networks 2000 (PN2000) is the equivalent programme for the telecom/ISP sector, enabling
customers to migrate from old world voice networks to New World IP-based public networks. The
building blocks of the PN2000 initiatives are in three key areas: broadband access technology,
backbone network technology and operational and billing support systems (OSS/BSS) for service
providers.
New Partnership Agreements
As part of e-Net`s new e-business security offerings, Datacraft partnered with Baltimore
Technologies for public key infrastructure (PKI) offerings. A PKI is a combination of hardware
and software products, policies and procedures that provides the basic security functions
required to carry out electronic business so that users - who do not know one another, or are
widely distributed - can communicate through a chain of trust.
An agreement was also signed with Check Point Software to provide a comprehensive range of
firewall and VPN (Virtual Private Network) solutions for Internet, intranet and extranet
deployments.
In line with its PN2000 strategy, Datacraft teamed up with Samsung Electronics, a world leader
in electronics, to pursue the rapidly emerging business opportunities with broadband Internet
service providers in Asia Pacific. Samsung`s broadband Internet access solutions include cable
TV network digital modems, ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) modems and Internet video
phones.
In building its portfolio of software support solutions, Datacraft partnered with Portal
Software to offer Telecom Service Providers customer management and billing software. Portal`s
Infranet real-time solutions enable instant provisioning of service offerings; usage-based
billing and custom target marketing during service use.
Enterprise contracts
Major banking contracts worth over US$14 million
Over the past 6 months, Datacraft has clinched projects with MNC banks that resulted in sales
of over US$14 million in equipment and services. These projects involve building
high-performance, secured communications infrastructure to enhance the efficiency and quality
of banking services.
Contract to build one of Asia`s largest ATM networks
Huawei Technologies - one of China`s largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer -
contracted Datacraft to build an enterprise intranet infrastructure for its new production
plant in China. The US$1 million intranet project interconnects the networks of Huawei`s
electronics centre, mechanical processing centre and manufacturing centre, all of which
reside within the new plant. The Huawei intranet is one of the largest ATM enterprise networks
ever to be implemented in Asia.
US$800,000 deal to build the first call centre in India
Datacraft has successfully implemented India`s first call centre in a US$800,000 project for
GE Capital Services. The project, will be the first voice-over-ATM implementation in the
country, is implemented in multiple locations in India and the US. It uses several units of
Cisco IGX 8430 WAN switches, equipped with redundant power supply and processor modules. The
completed network provides voice connectivity and data connectivity over Frame Relay, as well
as bandwidth-on-demand for various applications.
Over US$13 million worth of enterprise wins in China
Datacraft has stepped up efforts to grow its enterprise market share in China. Over the last
five months, the company has clinched over US$13 million worth of networking projects in China.
The new deals include a contract from Zhejiang Provincial government that involves building a
secure multi-service LAN that would meet growing intra-office voice and data communications
demands. China Life Insurance, one of the country`s largest enterprises, also awarded Datacraft
a contract to build a multi-service architecture to link up its regional hub to 90 sales offices
in Fujian province.
Telecom contracts
Project wins of more than US$10 million in China DDN market
Datacraft`s strong digital data network (DDN) market leadership in China has yielded contracts
worth over US$10 million from leading Chinese provincial telecom authorities. The projects
entail upgrading the telecom authorities` existing DDN infrastructure with the installation of
NET multi-services systems to address the fast-growing voice and Internet service demands of
businesses. Among the customers are Weifang Telecom from Shandong province, Jihua Telecom from
Zhejiang province, Zibo Telecom from Shandong province, as well as Sha`anxi and Gansu PTA.
Internet infrastructure solution for India`s BSES Telecom
Datacraft has successfully built a high-performance, multi-service Internet infrastructure for
BSES Telecom Ltd, one of the leading telecommmunications and Internet service providers in India.
The US$450,000 contract involves the implementation of a state-of-the-art Internet gateway
backbone, dial-up access network and firewall security based on Cisco Systems` technology.
Other services provided include consultancy services, design and network maintenance services.
Internet backbone projects in South Korea
The booming telecommunications market in South Korea has opened up significant business
opportunities for Datacraft Commis. The company has won more than US$1.8 million worth of
contracts from Hitel, a leading telecommunications company, to build its IP backbone and install
remote access servers based on Cisco Systems` solutions. Datacraft also secured a US$3 million
project from Hanaro Telecom, another leading telecommunications company in Korea, to build their
IP backbone.
Strong services growth continues
Datacraft has capitalised on the region`s growing outsourcing trends to realise strong services
growth into the new millennium. The company has seen a surge in the use of STARtrac, its
advanced 24-hour network management centre by multinational corporations. These companies
include MCI Worldcom, Origin and Citibank. In Korea, Datacraft also won a contract to provide
consultancy services to Hanaro Telecom, a leading telecommunications company, to help Hanaro
optimise its national network infrastructure and maintain its competitive edge.
Strengthening Datacraft Management
Datacraft continued to beef up its management team with a few key appointments. Formerly
Director of Services, Koh See Heong now oversees the operations of the Group as Chief Operating
Officer. Basil Chan was appointed as the Chief Financial Officer in place of Victor Yung who
has stepped down from the Board of Directors and assumed the role of Director, M&A.

Datacraft Asia posts stellar full year results with strong profit before tax growth of 57%
Singapore, 17 August 2000. . . Mainboard listed Datacraft Asia, the region`s leading networking systems integrator and e-business enabler, posts the highest operating profit growth for the last three years on the back of yet another stellar set of results. For the year ended 30 June 2000, the Datacraft Asia Group increased its profit before tax by 57% to US$42.6 million on the back of revenue growth of 64% over the last financial year to US$417.7 million. Profit after tax and minorities surged 47% over last financial year to US$31.5 million. "I`m pleased to announce that we are firmly back on the fast-track after a slight softness in China in the first half. This maintains our unbroken record of pretax profit growth of more than 50% per annum compound growth rate over the last seven years," said Des Althorp, chairman of Datacraft Asia. "More importantly, the company has successfully transformed itself into an end-to-end e-systems integrator that allows us to address the unprecedented opportunities in the new economy for networking and e-business integration.""The company is, of course, a larger and more complex business than it was in the mid-90s, so these results are a considerable testament to the talent and dedication of the staff and management team. Our ability to grow our core networking business and even increase our market share despite the Asian economic crisis has been key in reinforcing our leadership position in the industry. Notably, we have also been successful in leveraging our investments and the skills of our people to achieve high organic growth, as exemplified by our operations in Korea where revenues have grown several times over since we entered the market 18 months ago.""In line with our strategy, we have successfully grown our services business at the highest rate, achieving an 89% year-on-year growth in the high margin services division. Together with the rapid rollout of the Millennium Strategy in the last nine months, we are poised to become the major player in e-business enablement when the e-commerce market takes off in the region. This will supplement and strengthen our existing position as the region`s leading networking systems integrator.""Our core networking business remains an area of high market demand, particularly for broadband infrastructure and network management services. We are addressing these opportunities through our well established telecom and enteprise divisions, supplemented by our high value services. In addition, together with Dimension Data, we will be introducing global services for our multinational customers, " added Althorp.Datacraft Asia`s key achievements for financial year 2000 include:Millennium StrategyIn November 1999, Datacraft unveiled its Millennium Strategy, a blueprint to capitalise on the digital economy for rapid growth and increased market share. Combined with Datacraft`s networking expertise, these three acquisitions provide enterprises preparing to undertake e-business transformation with end-to-end consulting and integration service offerings. der halbjahresbericht:

Focusing on the two key growth areas: e-business systems integration and the "new-world" IP (Internet Protocol) based public network infrastructure, the Millennium Strategy underlines the company`s plan to position itself as a service driven, high value-add company. Datacraft targets to derive 50 per cent of its business from services and software offerings by 2002. Establishing e-business integration capabilitiesAs part of the company`s Millennium strategy to expand into e-commerce consulting and e-systems integration, Datacraft Asia has acquired 60 per cent stakes in three fast-growing e-commerce integration companies – I Square Solutions, DFI Consulting and PlaNET Technology Solutions – for a total of US$21.41 million. The deals give Datacraft access to highly experienced e-systems integration specialists with a strong track record of delivering e-business solutions based on Internet technologies to enterprise customers. Combined with Datacraft`s networking expertise, these three acquisitions provide enterprises preparing to undertake e-business transformation with end-to-end consulting and integration service offerings. PlaNET`s strength in financial portal and customer-relationship management systems complement iSquare`s expertise in business-to-business and supply-chain management solutions, and both are supported by DFI Consulting`s skill in the integration of ERP systems with e-commerce front-ends.Expanding value-added servicesUnder the Millennium Strategy, the company is supplementing its existing strength in building telecom/Internet infrastructure networks with business and operation support system services for telecommunications companies, Internet service providers, applications service providers and data centre operators. The company is also leveraging its investment in STARtrac by working with the managed service centres operated by the Dimension Data Group – Datacraft`s majority shareholder - elsewhere in the world. The collaboration is set to create the industry`s first truly global portfolio of online enterprise management services.Expanding geographical footprintDatacraft made its inroad into the region`s largest market - Japan by acquiring 75 percent stake in Netwave Co. Ltd and PTS Co. Ltd in the first half of the financial year. Datacraft strengthens network management service capability with new STARtrac centres in Japan and New Zealand
Singapore, 17 Aug 2000 ... In an aggressive step to expand its service business, regional networking systems integrator and e-business enabler Datacraft Asia has opened new state-of-the-art network management centres in Japan and New Zealand. These centres replicate and expand the capabilities offered by Datacraft`s original Singapore-based STARtrac centre. The new centres, also known as STARtrac (STAR Technical Response and Assistance Centre), offer customers real-time, online network management services and support around-the-clock. In the coming months, Datacraft will open a similar centre in Korea and also plans to link all of its STARtrac operations with Dimension Data`s network operations centres around the world to provide the world`s first global services network."As more and more companies move from traditional business models into the e-commerce world, their need for technology assistance and outsourced network services becomes more critical," said Mr Koh See Heong, Datacraft`s chief operating officer and Director of Services."We understand such concerns, which is why we are moving fast to address their networking demands as well as their need to outsource their network management. The setting up of new STARtrac operations throughout Asia Pacific is integral in delivering quality services to our customers, wherever they are."The two new centres are linked to the main STARtrac operation based in Singapore and are equipped with sophisticated facilities such as 24-hour helpdesk, call centre and remote network monitoring. "The complexity of managing today`s information networks and lack of skilled IT professionals are driving companies in New Zealand to outsource their network management," said Mark McHugh, Managing Director of Datacraft New Zealand. "As the demand mounts rapidly in the country, the launch of STARtrac is opportune in helping us capture a lion`s share of this new emerging market and meet customers` demand for local specialised IT support."In Japan the opening of STARtrac, with its ability to provide 24-hour proactive support, has enabled Datacraft to achieve Cisco Systems` prestigious Certified Gold Partner certification, which is awarded to channel partners with the highest standard of sales and support."With the set-up of STARtrac in Japan, we are now fully equipped to offer a wide range of online network services on top of our end-to-end network infrastructure solution," said Yoshimoto Uemura, President of Datacraft Netwave in Japan. "STARtrac Japan has the unique ability to provide telephone support services in both Japanese and English. This effectively removes any language barrier our customers may face when they outsource their network management to Datacraft."Managed by highly qualified and certified service engineers, STARtrac offers a wide selection of advanced real-time, proactive network management services that would help optimise companies` network performance and availability. These range from basic monitoring to extensive predictive analysis and reporting, through to complete facility management including security services.Using its fully automated Customer Services Management System, STARtrac is able to perform on-line fault tracking, remote diagnosis and fault resolution without disrupting customers` mission-critical networks, ensuring consistent service delivery to multinational clients. In addition, customers can access STARtrac`s secure web portal to check on their network status and performance in real time. Where on-site technical assistance is required, STARtrac also guarantees on-site response within four hours in most cities in Asia Pacific.
