Israeli Cable Industry Launches Digital Services

TEL AVIV -- Matav Cable Systems Media and Tevel Israel International Communications -- two of Israel’s top MSOs -- quietly launched digital service this month, countering one of the main advantages trumpeted by upstart direct-to-home rival YES DBS Satellite Services.

YES, which launched last July, had exclusive permission from the government to provide digital TV for a nine-month period. The temporary monopoly was aimed at helping YES build its business to compete with cable. The cablers received government permission to sell digital services in early February.

Israel’s No. 3 MSO, Golden Channels, is expected to launch its digital services by the end of this month. Matav and Tevel subscribers who purchase digital decoders are able to receive additional services that include an electronic program guide and n-video-on-demand pay-per-view programming.

Israeli media regulators still are discussing conditions -- mainly the pricing structure -- under which the MSOs can sell their digital service. That means additional digital tiers of programming probably won’t be available until April at the earliest.

Other services, such as email-over-TV, full video-on-demand and gaming are yet unavailable because of technical limitations
