E*TRADE Australia ANNOUNCES 80% TRADING VOLUME INCREASE FOR DECEMBER 1999
QUARTER
SYDNEY, 4 January 2000 - E*TRADE Australia (ASX Code: ETR) today announced
that the company continued to experience exceptional growth during the
quarter ended 31 December 1999.
Highlights (Unaudited)
* E*TRADE Australia now accounts for about 27% of all online trades
executed on the ASX
* Recent survey rates E*TRADE Australia the # 1 online brand
* December quarter trading volume up 80% on September quarter
* December quarter brokerage revenue up 50% on September quarter
* Customer accounts exceed 34,000 - up 32% since 30 September 1999
* Customer assets up 18% since 30 September to $1.2 billion
* December market participation averages 6.32% in all trades on the
ASX
* ANZ commences its marketing campaign, initially targeting its
130,000 Internet banking customers, and ANZ staff and shareholders
E*TRADE Australia, which has been trading in Australia for just over 20
months, now accounts for about 27% of online trades on the ASX and is
regularly amongst Australia`s Top 10 brokers by volume. A recent survey
confirmed E*TRADE Australia is the leading online brand and measured by
trades executed, is currently the second largest online provider of Internet
stockbroking services in Australia. It is fast closing on the market leader.
E*TRADE Australia`s online executions now exceed the combined online trades
of the next three largest players.
"On current growth rates, we anticipate that E*TRADE Australia will surpass
the market leader in terms of online trades around mid-2000," said Mr Kerry
Roxburgh, Group Chief Executive Officer, E*TRADE Australia. "We are aiming
to exceed their combined online and phone trades by the end of the year
2000."
In a quarter when online trades on the ASX rose from 8% to over 11% of all
trades, the number of E*TRADE Australia`s customer accounts grew strongly
and today exceeds 34,000. This is an increase of 32% since 30 September
1999. E*TRADE Australia`s customers executed 80% more trades on the ASX than
in the September quarter, with the company participating in an average of
6.32% of all trades for the month of December compared with 3.69% in
September 1999, an increase of 72%.
Despite a price cut on 23 September 1999, brokerage revenue (unaudited) for
the December quarter exceeded that for the September quarter by 50%. The
current value of registered customer assets (cash and securities) is $1.2
billion, up 18% since 30 September 1999. Gross brokerage revenue for the
half-year exceeded $7 million.
"The fact that our customers` trading volume increased by 80% in the quarter
ended December 1999, can be attributed in part to our continuing commitment
to upgrading the quality and diversity of our offering and strength of the
E*TRADE Australia brand. We have been the brand leader in the online space
for the past 12 months. A recent survey shows that our brand leadership is
increasing over time," said Mr Roxburgh.
ANZ E*TRADE Online Investing
The ANZ E*TRADE Online Investing(1) service commenced with a soft launch
during the quarter and is performing in accordance with management
expectations. ANZ has commenced its marketing campaign, initially targeting
its 130,000 Internet banking customers, and ANZ staff and shareholders.
This first phase of the marketing program that occurred during December 1999
included advertisements in leading Australian newspapers. Further
significant marketing activities are planned for early in the New Year.
E*TRADE Australia does not expect ANZ to be entitled to any new shares
during the first 6 monthly milestone period ending 31 March 2000.
During the period, E*TRADE Australia wrote off as an abnormal non-cash item,
$42,180,000 representing the deemed value of the initial allotment of shares
to ANZ. This action was foreshadowed in the CEO`s report to shareholders in
the 1999 Annual Report.
E*TRADE Pro
"Over the past three months we have introduced a number of innovative new
services for our customers. Most recently, we introduced E*TRADE Pro, a
free Internet service providing dynamic data feeds for our active investors
enabling them to literally watch their order hit the market. We are the only
broker in Australia to offer active investors access to their accounts over
the web, and now via PC-based software again using the Internet," said Mr
Roxburgh. "In November, we launched our Investors Relations web site to
provide the latest and most comprehensive information on the company."
"The first quarter of this year will be an extremely active one for E*TRADE
Australia, with the launch of a number of new financial services products.
In addition, Michael Deleray, who joins us from The E*TRADE Group in the US,
has been appointed Chief Operating Officer, effective from January 2000.
These initiatives will not only reinforce E*TRADE Australia`s reputation as
the innovator in online investing but also set us well on the road to
achieving our goal of becoming the leader in online personal financial
services in Australia," said Mr Malcolm Spry, Chairman E*TRADE Australia.
(1) In June 1999, E*TRADE Australia signed an agreement with ANZ to form a
strategic alliance. The innovative structure of this agreement gave E*TRADE
Australia access to ANZ`s 4 million-strong customer base. Under the
agreement, ANZ received the opportunity to be issued with 40 percent equity
in E*TRADE Australia.

Hallo nobe,

sogar vom englischen
übersetzt hast - mein englisch ist miserabel also doppelt dank !
