      DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

Motorola Inc. (MOT) cut its fourth-quarter forecast as a result of a shortfall in its mobile devices segment, citing an unfavorable geographical and product-tier mix of sales.

Motorola now expects to earn between 13 cents and 16 cents a share on a GAAP basis, which the company said falls below its internal forecast. The latest estimate includes charges of 10 cents a share for investment-related losses, stock compensation expenses, business reorganization charges and unusual tax expenses.

Motorola also reduced its sales views for the quarter to between $11.6 billion and $11.8 billion from its original forecast of $11.8 billion and $12.1 billion.

Analysts polled by Thomson First Call predict earnings of 39 cents a share on sales of $11.98 billion.

Motorola said its mobile devices unit sales were about 66 million units, up 48% from a year earlier. Meanwhile, results for its networks and enterprise and connected home segments are expected to meet or exceed internal expectations.

Motorola plans to release quarterly results on Jan. 19, when it will "discuss plans to improve profitability."

Sprint Nextel cut at Deutsche Bank on 'abysmal' outlook

      By Aude Lagorce
Last Update: 5:58 AM ET Jan 9, 2007

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- Deutsche Bank cut telecommunications operator Sprint Nextel (S) to sell from hold, citing the "abysmal" 2007 outlook released on Monday. The broker told clients that with the cut in estimated 2007 EBITDA and higher-than-expected capital expenditures, it looks like Sprint's operating performance will continue to deteriorate through 2007 before signs of improvement emerge. Deutsche Bank said it now looks for negative net subscriber addition in all four quarters of 2007. In addition, after the pre-announcement reduced its cash-flow estimate by 60%, the broker said it is unlikely that investors will continue to believe the company is a prime leveraged buy-out or merger candidate.

AMD sees lower prices cutting into results

      By Ruth Mantell, MarketWatch
Last Update: 11:12 PM ET Jan 11, 2007

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc. warned Thursday evening that significantly lower microprocessor average selling prices have tamped fourth-quarter operating income.
The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based chip company (AMD) said the lower microprocessor average selling prices "largely" offset a "significant" increase in unit sales.

The company also expects operating income, excluding its recent acquisition of ATI Technologies Inc., to be "substantially" lower than the prior quarter's result.
AMD, the world's No. 2 maker of PC and corporate server chips, has been locked in a heated battle with Intel Corp. (INTC ) , the No. 1 maker, for sales.

AMD recently won a key legal victory in its ongoing antitrust suit against Intel as a federal court ruled that Intel must produce documents and other evidence related to its foreign dealings with PC makers, distributors and others. See full story.
Last month, AMD's chief financial officer said he did not expect the company's growth to slow anytime soon. See full story.
AMD has also been planning to generate higher-than-projected cost savings from its $5.4 billion acquisition of ATI, and make a broader push in the consumer electronics market.
Thursday evening, AMD said it sees fourth-quarter revenue, excluding ATI, growing 3% from the $1.33 billion reached in the prior quarter.
In October, AMD, which has a market capitalization of more than $11 billion, said it was looking for fourth-quarter demand to be "seasonally strong" and expected sequential sales growth. At that time, AMD did not provide further details.
AMD added that the lower microprocessor prices have also impacted its gross margin. In October, the company's shares fell more than 13% after it reported that profit margins were squeezed due to the ongoing price war and manufacturing missteps. See full story.
AMD shares closed Thursday at $20.18, up 0.85%. In after-hours trading, the shares fell more than 2%.

      Intel's Profit Decline Shows
      Weight of Rivalry With AMD
      Net Drops 39%,
      But Revenue Falls
      Less Than Expected

      January 17, 2007; Page A3

Intel Corp.'s fourth-quarter results signaled that a counterattack against rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is working but taking a toll on the chip giant's profit.

The Santa Clara, Calif., technology bellwether, still suffering from softer demand for the computers that use its microprocessors as well as recent gains by AMD, said net income was off 39% from the year-earlier period on a 5% drop in revenue. Revenue was higher than analysts expected, however, and its prediction for revenue in the first quarter was also a bit higher than the average estimate on Wall Street.

      CHIPPING AWAY

      • The Situation: Intel is trying to regain market share lost to AMD, a much smaller competitor.

      • What's New: Intel's fourth-quarter revenue was better than Wall Street expected, but its forecast for profit margins was disappointing.

      • What's Next: AMD reports results next Tuesday, shedding more light on the fierce battle between the companies.

A bigger surprise, however, was a projection that Intel's closely watched gross profit margin will be roughly 49% in the first quarter -- down from 49.6% in the fourth quarter and 61.8% in the fourth quarter of 2005 -- and will improve to only about 50% for all of 2007. Intel attributed the prediction mainly to costs of improving its manufacturing technology. The company's stock, which was at $22.30, up 17 cents, in 4 p.m. Nasdaq Stock Market composite trading, declined following the news to $21.65 in after-hours trading.

"I would have thought they would have been more optimistic about their margin expansion," said Adam Parker, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein.

Intel has long dominated the market for chips that serve as electronic brains in computers. But AMD, of Sunnyvale, Calif., has become much more competitive, forcing Intel to cut prices and step up the pace of product introductions.

Intel said that in the fourth quarter, the average selling price of its chips rose on record unit volume. AMD, by contrast, had stunned investors last week by warning of lower-than-expected fourth-quarter profit, caused by "significantly" lower average prices.

Asked about the disparity, Intel Chief Financial Offier Andy Bryant said Intel sold a higher proportion of new chips for laptop computers and servers, which tend to command higher prices than chips for desktop PCs. As computer buyers placed fewer orders for machines with AMD chips -- at companies such as Dell Inc., a new customer -- AMD was left with excess inventory of chips that it was forced to sell to others at steep discounts, said Sumit Dhanda, an analyst at Banc of America Securities.

Mr. Bryant said he expects pricing to be competitive in the first quarter. "They have full intentions of using price as a weapon," said John Lau, an analyst at Jefferies & Co.

Another weapon is manufacturing technology, which allows Intel to produce chips with more transistors at a lower cost. For example, Intel was more than a year ahead of AMD in shrinking the size of chip circuitry to 65 nanometers, or billionths of a meter, from 90 nanometers.

As a result, Intel has been able to package two dual-processor chips in what it calls "quad-core" chips; AMD is waiting until mid-year to package four processors on a single piece of silicon. "Our 65-nanometer transition was superbly executed," said Paul Otellini, Intel's chief executive, during a conference call with analysts.

But the costs of operating its 90-nanometer factories at less than full capacity knocked its profit margin down by about two percentage points in the fourth quarter, Mr. Bryant said. Costs of starting up new production lines that create 45-nanometer circuitry are likely to reduce profit margins in the first quarter by about three percentage points, he added.

Intel has made progress in reducing its costs, trimming its headcount by nearly 6,000 workers to 94,000. The company said it is on track to reduce total spending and manufacturing costs by about $2 billion. It recorded a $483 million gain on selling some operations, along with $457 million in restructuring and asset-impairment charges.

"The fourth quarter was a strong ending to a challenging year," Mr. Bryant said.
