Stock picks of the week
Quantum, Alltel, Lucent, Cisco, Intel,
HD, and GE make the short list
April 07, 2000: 1:50 p.m. ET
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Every week, CNNfn asks some of the nation`s top
analysts and money managers to comment on their favorite stock picks.
Here`s a rundown of their recommendations, culled from CNNfn.com`s daily
feature, "Stock picks by the pros."
The current investing environment is "really a tale of two markets," Dan
Veru, portfolio manager, Palisade Capital Management, said
Friday. "You`ve got the S&P and the Dow that have gone through
a long corrective phase and look quite good from this level.
Conversely, the Nasdaq is going through some market swings
with some of the high-flying technology stocks. But within technology there are
names that we like, such as Quantum Corp. DSSG (DSS: Research,
Estimates), which is an old name, a competitor to names like Seagate (SEG:
Research, Estimates) and Maxtor (MXTR: Research, Estimates)."
"We like Quantum," said Veru. "The company`s got $350 a share in cash
and no debt, and it`s generating a lot of cash flow. Storage has gone through a
long period of decline, but we`re seeing tremendous new demand coming in for
storage every day. We think that pricing is going to improve, and these are
companies with huge revenue bases where a nominal tick-up in the margin
structure leads to tremendous profitability. We`ve got them earning over $4 over
the next two years; the stock is at $12 right now."

"I think investors should make technology a big piece of their portfolios,"
said Patricia Chadwick, president, Ravengate Partners,
"but they must look for the companies that really do have
earnings. Personally, I`m very afraid of those companies that
have no earnings at all or are selling at huge multiples of their
revenue. But that may be because I`m not as sophisticated
an observer of technology. But I also think that there are a lot
of what you might call `old economy` stocks, companies like
Wal*Mart (WMT: Research, Estimates) and Home Depot
(HD: Research, Estimates) and GE (GE: Research, Estimates), moving
towards `new economy` initiatives. GE is probably the most sophisticated
company in terms of the use of the Internet and the new technology. And I
think those companies will do extremely because they will be part of the
Internet B2B or B2C environment."

"Our top picks have been BellSouth (BLS: Research, Estimates), ALLTEL
(AT: Research, Estimates) and Sprint (FON: Research, Estimates)," Tim
Horan, telecom analyst, CIBC World Markets, said Wednesday. "BellSouth
partly because they`re so cheap on some of the parts basis. They have some
great wireless assets that are really not reflected in their valuation. And we felt
it was pretty inevitable that they would begin to create separate companies to
recognize some of that valuation."
"Alltel is probably one of the cheapest wireless stocks on the planet," said
Horan. "And there`s a good chance they can spin out some of their divisions in
the next year or two. And also once again fundamentals should be very strong
there."
"Sprint is very inexpensive versus the WorldCom takeover. It`s over a 25
percent discount," Horan said. "First, (there is) the $76 that WorldCom will be
acquiring it for. And we think it`s a very strong likelihood that merger will go
through by the end of the year."

Lucent (LU: Research, Estimates) could, despite being a tech stock, be
considered a value stock, David Powers, senior technology
analyst, Edward Jones, said Tuesday. "I think it`s important that
investors look at technology stocks right now that have been
around for some time, that have a proven track record of growing
revenue and earnings, and have an established track record to
look at," said Powers. "And within technology, Lucent certainly
fits that bill. Yes, the company has had some bad news. But if
you noticed yesterday, during this massive sell-off in the Nasdaq, Lucent was
just down slightly. They have some new products on the market, and I think the
second half of the year is going to be very strong for them."

"I don`t think Cisco (CSCO: Research, Estimates) is going to disappoint,"
Bill Keithler, fund manager, Invesco Technology fund, said Monday,
discussing about the earnings prospects for the first of the so-called "four
horsemen" of Nasdaq, "and they will be the last to report; they`ll report in May. I
think Intel (INTC: Research, Estimates) is going to report a good number. I
think Microsoft (MSFT: Research, Estimates) will report an in-line number. And
Dell (DELL: Research, Estimates) has already lowered the bar of expectations.
I don`t think they are going to disappoint [investors] either."

Basisinvestments halten.
Zu den Auserkorenen gehören der Anbieter von Online-Zahlungsdiensten First Data
[NYSE: FDC Kurs / Chart ], der Datenbankspezialist Oracle [Nasdaq: ORCL Kurs /
Chart ], der Netztechnik-Produzent Cisco [Nasdaq: CSCO Kurs / Chart ] und der
Entwickler von Prüfsystemen Teradyne [NYSE: TER Kurs / Chart ]. Weitere

Hallo Bonnie-Jean, vielen Dank für deine "Nachtarbeit" - great !
