NexPower breaks ground for thin-film solar cell plant in Shandong, China
Nuying Huang, Taipei; Willie Teng, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 13 October 2010]
NexPower Energy, a United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) subsidiary, on October 13 held a groundbreaking ceremony in Jining, Shandong Province for the construction of a thin-film solar cell facility.
The manufacturing plant is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2011 with an initial capacity of 35MWp and up to 70MWp eventually. NexPower's solar cell capacity in Taiwan and China will total 150MWp in 2010.
In related news, a UMC-invested grid-connection solar farm in Jining officially went online on October 13. The solar farm, which adopted amorphous silicon and microcrystalline silicon cells from NexPower, has an installed capacity of 17.2MWp and is capable of providing electricity to 4,500-5,000 households. The company claimed that the solar farm is Asia's largest thin-film solar system. UMC also broke ground for a second solar farm with 20MWp installed capacity expected in the region on the same day.

NexPower Technology, a subsidiary of United Microelectronics has entered into a module supply agreement with Wipro EcoEnergy, the cleantech business of Wipro Ltd.
The agreement allows for a capacity allocation of 36 MW in thin-film photovoltaic solar modules along with engineering expertise on system design, servicing and delivering joint solutions to the end customer. The shipment of the PV modules to India, for use on Solar Farms has already begun.
The innovative NexPower modules have won the Taiwan Science Park Creative Product Award three years in a row (2008-2010) and the worldwide patent applied has exceeded over 100 applications. In high-temperature environments NexPower’s thin-film technology can produce more power versus conventional crystalline silicon solar cells, thereby becoming the technology of choice for Solar Farms.
Arthur Chou, CEO, Nexpower said, “Since its inception, NexPower has been committed to advancing the development and application of solar photovoltaic technologies. This strategic project with Wipro EcoEnergy is a milestone for Taiwan PV manufacturers and will help us grow our footprint in Asia, with an increased focus on the rapidly growing Indian market.” Highlighting a growing trend in the use of Solar Energy he added, “The total watt sold by NexPower has grown over six times, from 10.3 MW in 2009 to 73.8MW in 2010.”
G K Prasanna, President. Wipro EcoEnergy said, “Incorporating sustainability in mainstream business operations is more than simple green-washing. Through our investment with NexPower, Wipro EcoEnergy is now geared up to deliver the latest Solar PV Solutions to cater to the growing power-demand of governments, customers and even our own Sustainability Targets.”
