The Wall Street Transcript Publishes B2B e-Commerce Report
Tue Apr 18 08:00:00 EDT 2000
NEW YORK, Apr 18, 2000 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Five leading analysts and top
management from twenty-one sector firms examine B2B e-commerce companies in the
latest issue of The Wall Street Transcript (212-952-7433) or
http://www.twst.com/info/info84.htm
In a vital review of this evolving sector for investors and industry
professionals, this 132-page B2B e-commerce issue features:
1) B2B e-commerce -- In an in-depth (6,000 words) analysis of the sector, Eric
Upin, Managing Director at Robertson Stephens, discusses the outlook for
Internet services stocks, explains B2B exchanges, market corrections, shares his
view on growth sectors, valuation methods, and offers his current stock
recommendations.
On the sector, Upin comments, "We believe the biggest payoffs, in terms of
productivity, capacity utilization, and improvements in business processes, will
come from this phase, that is, connecting businesses to other businesses. It is
new. It also commands some of the highest valuations in the stock market today.
It is also one of the most volatile areas."
Internet Capital Group (Nasdaq: ICGE) is well positioned, finds Upin. "It`s a
stock that has been hit very hard, but it`s one of our favorites in the sector
because it is a diversified play on the B2B space. It is a holding company and
an incubator that has over 41 companies in the B2B space."
For a free interview excerpt in which Upin explains why he rates Internet
Capital Group as `top pick`, see http://www.twst.com/notes/articles/jaw813.html
Upin highlights Ventro (Nasdaq: VNTR), formerly called Chemdex, as a value name.
"Ventro originally started in one vertical market and now they are targeting
four. They actually have both a powerful technology architecture and technology
capability to deliver these verticals, which is much harder than it looks at
first glance."
On VerticalNet (Nasdaq: VERT), Upin states: "VerticalNet is also an interesting
one because VerticalNet is targeting 55 different vertical marketplaces. So you
have a broadly diversified B2B play, which is specializing in markets that are
most prone to adoption, or ones where they`ve developed expertise. In
particular, it`s the electronics vertical."
This 132-page B2B e-commerce Issue also includes:
2) B2B e-commerce -- In an in-depth Analyst Roundtable (8,800 words), James
Pickrel, Senior Analyst at Chase H&Q, Chris Rowen, Research Analyst at The
Robinson-Humphrey Company and Steven Tuen, Co-Manager of the Kinetics Internet
Fund and Kinetics Emerging Growth Fund, examine the outlook for the industry,
including e-commerce infrastructure providers, B2B integration providers,
regulatory outlook and investment strategies, and give specific stock
recommendations.
3) European e-commerce & Internet Software -- In an in-depth (3,300 words)
Analyst Interview, Coleen Kaiser, Vice President of Merrill Lynch Securities
Research, gives her insights about the sector, as US technology companies expand
into Europe, and shares specific stock recommendations.
4) The TWST confidential Off-The-Record survey of management performance at 16
sector firms asked market insiders about the ability of management teams to
create shareholder value. Firms reviewed in Off-The-Record include: Agile
Software, Ariba, Art Technology Group, Bluestone Software, BroadVision, Commerce
One, Datastream Systems, Harbinger Corporation, i2 Technologies, Informatica,
Oracle, Retek, SAP AG, Siebel Systems, VerticalNet, WebMethods.
5) CEO interviews (average 3,300 words). Top management of twenty-one sector
firms examine the outlook for their firm and the sector. Firms include:
Adatom.com, Bluestone Software, E Com Ventures, Hypercom Corporation, IXnet,
Mercator Software, Metretek Technologies, SOS Staffing Services, zebramart.com,
Andover.Net, Ashford.com, Bluefly, FTD.COM, Garden.com, HeadHunter.net, Juno
Online Services, Promotions.com, QuickLogic Corporation, ShopNow.com,

RESEARCH ALERT-FreeMarkets, Ventro, VeritcalNet started

NEW YORK, April 24 (Reuters) - Credit Suisse First Boston
said Monday it started coverage of FreeMarkets Inc.
and Ventro Corp. as a buy and VerticalNet Inc.
as a strong buy.
-- said it set a 6-12 month target of $85 to $90 a share for
online business auctioneer FreeMarkets.
-- said FreeMarkets has created substantial industrial
purchasing expertise and has turned that expertise into large,
long-term engagement contracts.
-- said the market opportunity addressed by FreeMarkets
purchasing solution is perhaps the largest possible B2B market
for direct materials and services purchasing, which is at least
a $1 trillion market in the U.S. alone and more than $5
trillion world-wide.
-- said it set a 12-month target for Ventro, which operates
a business-to-business electronic commerce marketplace, at $45
a share.
-- said Ventro looks attractive at current much-reduced
levels.
-- said Ventro has announced four additional B2B e-commerce
companies beyond Chemdex, its initial company.
-- said it set a 12 month target of $110 to $120 a share for
VerticalNet, which runs business-to-business Web sites.
-- said VerticalNet`s recent strategic partnership with
Microsoft should guarantee its $220 million of high
gross margin revenue over the next three years.
-- said it currently dominates the online market for
dissemination of supplier information and the managing of
e-commerce transactions in 57 vertical trade in communities.
-- shares of FreeMarkets closed at 59-13/16; shares of
Ventro closed Thursday at 29-11/16 and shares of VerticalNet
