By Marijn van der Pas
FRANKFURT, June 14 (Reuters) - Swiss film licence dealer Highlight Communications expects a 2000 net profit of 17 million euros ($16.38 million) boosted by a recent capital increase, its chairman said on Wednesday.
"We expect earnings per share to rise to 35 eurocents this year, including the new shares. This is 17 million euros," Chief Executive Bernhard Burgener told Reuters in an interview.
Highlight posted a net profit of 7.7 million Swiss francs ($4.74 million) in 1999.
The company said earlier this week it had reaped "far more than 100 million euros" from its capital increase at the beginning of this month. The group plans to use the proceeds from the cap hike to expand its business.
Burgener said 75 percent of funds would be spent on buying entertainment content like movie licences and sports broadcasting rights. With the rest of the proceeds Highlight plans to acquire technology and content companies.
"We are in talks to acquire home entertainment content and technology companies," Burgener said.
Highlight is expanding its licence business with a data compression division to offer its customers digital content in a compressed format. This would enable users in the future to download movies and sport events via a high-speed Internet connection.
"Our technology differs from others because it doesn`t reduce the quality of the picture and because it is full-screen. We are talking to key distributors about offering our compressed library of films," Burgener said.
The company made its first move into its new media compression business in April when it bought a 20 percent stake in German Vidair AG, a camera systems company.
"We count on 35 million euros extra turnover with our new business activities in the next year," Burgener said. He expected the new business to account for 40 percent of the company`s total turnover in the next three to five years.
