L&H plans speech deal with Microsoft
Free language translation service will be offered

IEPER, Belgium (CBS.MW) -- Speech-recognition software maker
Lernout & Hauspie plans on Wednesday to announce that it will offer a
free language translation service through Microsoft`s Web site, sources
close to the company told CBS.MarketWatch.com.

The company plans to
offer its ITranslator
Online service to
consumers for free on
the Microsoft Office
update Web page,
where Microsoft sells
upgrades to its popular
suite of word
processing,
spreadsheet and
presentation software.
Financial terms were
not available.

L&H (LHSP: news, msgs) already sells its its ITranslator software to
corporations. CBS.MarketWatch.com reported in November on the
company`s plan to start a free Internet-based language translation service.
In addition to offering the software as a service through the Microsoft site,
L&H wants to offer it through its own Web site by year`s end. The
company will call its service ITranslator Online.

The service from the Microsoft and the L&H site will be able to bridge
communications in English, French, Spanish and German. Visitors to the sites will be able to translate up to two pages of text at no cost.

From the L&H site, the company plans to offer
service for translating additional pages for a fee. The
service will require that consumers register with
Lernout & Hauspie. Company executives weren`t
immediately available to confirm whether Microsoft
also plans to offer added services for a fee.
"The (L&H) site gives a rough translation; the goal
is to get the gist of a document," said Randy Morris,
an L &H product manager in an interview with
CBS.MarketWatch.com in mid-November from
the Comdex computer trade show. "It’s a good was
for us to attract small company business."

Morris said ITranslator Online should help drive
down the cost of language translation -- including the
cost of L&H’s human translators, which can charge
35 cents a word or more. Customers can use site to
get a rough outline of what they would like to say in
a foreign language, then have a human translator
clean up the grammar.

Other free translation services already exist --
including one from Compaq Computer Corp.’s
(CPQ: news, msgs) AltaVista. But Morris says that
most Internet sites don’t offer more complex services for a fee.

Shares of L&H rose 3/16 to 37 7/8 ahead of the news. Shares of Microsoft fell 1 1/2 to 98 15/16.

Ich schätze, auch das wird allenfalls nur 1$ intraday bringen (leider!).

Bei LHSP muß man einen sehr langen Atem haben, obwohl ich glaube, daß die Hauptdurststrecke überwunden ist. Was mir allerdings in der letzten Zeit gut gefallen hat ist, daß die Aktie nicht mehr unter 37$ zurückgefallen ist, und das, obwohl die Umsätze teilweise >500000 waren. Glaube nicht, daß das alles Eindeckungen von Shorties waren, dafür sind die rates noch zu hoch.

Wer nicht investiert ist: STRONG WATCH!
