Stocks May Celebrate Florida Court Ruling
By Denise Duclaux
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks are poised for a bright opening on Tuesday as the cloud of uncertainty that had hung over Wall Street lifted a bit after Republican George W. Bush (news - web sites) appeared one step closer to winning the battle for the White House.
``People are glad that the end is in sight,`` said James Volk, co-director of institutional trading at D.A. Davidson and Co. ``It`s positive for the markets when you get everything settled.``
A Florida judge`s ruling, following the close of regular trading on Monday, rejected Democrat Al Gore (news - web sites)`s legal challenge to Florida`s presidential election results, giving Bush a wafer-thin lead. If that ruling is not overturned, that would remove the uncertainty that`s been weighing on Wall Street for a month now.
The decision followed a U.S. Supreme Court (news - web sites) action on Monday, in which it set aside a ruling that extended the deadline for hand-counted Florida ballots and sent the case back to the Florida Supreme Court (news - web sites) for more proceedings.
With more than an hour to go before the opening bell, the Nasdaq 100 index futures rose 77.50 points to 2,635.00, indicating a gain of 3 percent in the tech-heavy market`s 100 biggest stocks. Standard & Poor`s 500 index futures climbed 10.90 points to 1,341.40.
The election news already boosted sectors like pharmaceuticals and tobacco, which are expected to benefit from a Bush administration, in pre-opening trade. Drug giant Merck & Co. (NYSE:MRK - news) traded at $92-11/16 before the opening bell from its $91-15/16 close on the Big Board. Cigarette maker Philip Morris Cos. Inc. (NYSE:MO - news) rose to $38-3/16 from $37-11/16 on the Nasdaq. Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news), also thought to benefit with Bush in the White House, climbed to $59-1/8 before the open of the regular session from $56-7/16.
European shares were muscling ahead on Tuesday, as techs and telecoms tracked the surge in Nasdaq futures. Mobil phone giant Nokia (NOK1V.HE) (NYSE:NOK - news) led the charge after a bullish revenue forecast. The FTSE Eurotop 300 (^FTEU3 - news) put on 1.7 percent and the DJ Stoxx 50 (^STOXX50 - news) gained 2.0 percent.
Wall Street is still left to grapple with its fear over the repercussions of a slowing economy. The slew of companies that warned quarterly results would land short of expectations continued after the closing bell on Monday.
``People are still talking about a slowdown in the economy or even a hard landing next year, so there are still some problems there,`` Volk said.
Data networking firm 3Com Corp. (NasdaqNM:COMS - news) warned of lower-than-expected sales and earnings in the second quarter, citing widespread sluggishness in the telecoms industry. The stock closed on Nasdaq at $13-3/8.
Supermarket chain Albertson`s Inc. (NYSE:ABS - news) reported a slight rise in third-quarter profits but fell short of Wall Street estimates, and slashed its fourth quarter earnings estimate by a third. Its shares closed at $24-1/16 on the Exchange.
Specialty semiconductor maker Xilinx Inc. (NasdaqNM:XLNX - news) cut its outlook for revenue growth in the current quarter, due to weak orders from its large North American customers. Xilinx shares closed at $41-11/16 on the Nasdaq.
But Lucent Technologies Inc (NYSE:LU - news), the networking equipment giant which has been floundering near its year low, offered welcome news to investors. Lucent said it had won a $780 million contract to supply equipment for a wireless network to be built in Germany. Its stock had closed at $15-5/16 on the New York Stock Exchange (news - web sites) before the news.
Blue-chip stocks had climbed on Monday as investors, spooked by reports of slowing U.S. economic growth, scrambled to buy shares of companies that have produced consistent earnings over time. Manufacturing, consumer products, chemical and drug stocks all charged higher, while technology stocks again foundered.
The Dow Jones Industrial average (^DJI - news) climbed 186.56 points, or 1.80 percent, to close at 10,560.10. The blue-chip index was boosted by gains in stalwarts like DuPont Co. (NYSED - news) and Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing (NYSE:MMM - news).
The broader Standard & Poor`s 500 Index (^SPX - news) was up 9.74 points, or 0.74 percent, to finish at 1,324.97.
But the Nasdaq Composite Index (^IXIC - news) limped down 29.54 points, or 1.12 percent, to 2,615.75, weighed down by lingering fears that many high-tech companies will be left high and dry as the U.S. economic expansion runs out of steam.
High-tech giants like Cisco Systems Inc. (NasdaqNM:CSCO - news), the world`s No. 1 provider of gear that powers the Internet, and Intel Corp. (NasdaqNM:INTC - news), the world`s No. 1 chip maker, led the tech-stacked Nasdaq lower.
