AMD: We need a chipmaking partner
By John G. Spooner, ZDNet News
The company is considering a deal with United Microelectronics to boost manufacturing capacity for its Athlon and Duron processors.

      (CNet/ZDNet Privacy Policy)

Advanced Micro Devices is headed toward a chip-manufacturing deal with United Microelectronics, expected to be announced Thursday,
according to sources familiar with the agreement.

The PC chipmaker and the Taiwanese chip foundry have scheduled a conference call for Thursday afternoon. During the call, the
companies are likely to say that UMC will manufacture PC processors for AMD, the sources said.

The companies could also announce a much more extensive relationship, including a joint-manufacturing agreement, the sources said.
Under such an agreement, the companies would split the cost of a new manufacturing facility, known as a fab, or possibly add on to an
      existing AMD facility.

Through such a deal, AMD would be aiming to boost manufacturing capacity for its Athlon and Duron processors and reduce the costs
involved. AMD declined to comment, and UMC could not be reached for comment.

AMD gave notice last fall that it would be moving in this direction, even though such an arrangement goes against the company`s long-standing
preference for building chips in-house. CEO Jerry Sanders is famous for his 1989 declaration that "real men have fabs."

But in November Sanders acknowledged the usefulness of chip foundries and said AMD would seek partners for future fabs. The company
already has such deals in place to manufacture flash memory. "It would be foolhardy not to take advantage of the capital expenditures of the
foundry industry," Sanders said at that time.

AMD also said a year ago that it would seek a partner to build a new PC processor fab in 2004. The company could use the extra manufacturing
      capacity, analysts said.
"There`s an argument that if (AMD) had a few more wafers, it could sell them," said Dean McCarron, a principal at Mercury
Research. "What`s in AMD`s interest is a slight expansion of its volume, quarter to quarter, so as to not affect their pricing."

AMD has been able to meet demand with its Fab 25 in Austin, Texas, and its newer Fab 30 in Dresden, Germany. However, Fab 25 is being converted
to produce flash memory, and Fab 30 is being brought up to capacity to produce more Athlon and Duron chips. Fab 30 is scheduled to reach full
capacity by the end of this year and should be able to produce 50 million chips per year in 2003, AMD executives have said.

AMD "doesn`t need to go nuts on building manufacturing facilities, but they do need to get their next facility under way so they can increase their
volumes," McCarron said. During the fourth quarter, AMD sold out of two Athlon XP speed grades.

"A million or so extra units could help" without creating a glut of processors that would cause the company to have to cut prices to move inventories,
McCarron said. "That`s one of the beauties of having foundry arrangements--that you can have shared capacity."

UMC, the second-largest foundry behind Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, already manufactures chipsets for AMD.

AMD kurz vor Ankündigung von "good news"?
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AMD and UMC to Collaborate on 300-mm Wafer Fabrication Facility in Singapore
Companies will Work Together on Technology Development and State-of-the-Art Manufacturing
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 31, 2002--AMD and UMC today announced a comprehensive alliance under which the two companies will establish a joint venture to own and operate a state-of-the-art, 300-mm wafer fabrication facility in Singapore for high-volume production of PC processors and other logic products. AMD and UMC also announced plans to collaborate in the development of advanced process technologies for semiconductor logic products. AMD and UMC separately announced a foundry agreement under which UMC will produce PC processors to augment AMD`s Dresden Fab 30 production capacity for devices produced on 130-nanometer and smaller-geometry technology.

AMD and UMC will form a joint venture known as AU Pte Ltd. to own and operate the Singapore facility. The two companies expect to begin commercial production in the joint venture facility on 65-nanometer technology in mid-2005.
