Index Changes in March 2000: Who Might Be In? And Who Might Be Out?

In early February 2000 (most likely on 8 February) Deutsche Börse will for the first time decide on the changes to the constituents of the Nemax50, based on end of January data. The main criteria for the selection of companies are market cap and turnover. The changes will become effective on 20 March 2000. Based on the criteria Deutsche Börse could replace up to 15-20 companies in the index, but we believe it will limit the changes to 10 companies.
We have official turnover data for almost all Neuer Markt companies and have considered both market cap and turnover toselect the companies. To be included in the Nemax50 a company has to beamong the top 60 companies both by market cap and turnover. Apart from that a number of other qualitative and quantitative criteria (eg. free float, sector)apply. A company can be excluded if it misses one of those criteria.

The companies most likely to be included (with rank by market cap as at 20/1/2000 and estimated annualised turnover as at 30/12/1999) are:
      BroadVision (1, 37),
      The Fantastic Corp.# (7, 55),
      Pixelpark# (10, 7),
      Direct Anlage Bank (17, 4),
      Dialog Semiconductors (18, 46),
      Trintech# (20, 30),
      MWG-Biotech (24, 57),
      ricardo.de# (25, 23),
      Integra (30, na),
      Plaut (26, 31)

      Further candidates could be:
      Parsytec (39, 50),
      Constantin Film (40, 59),
      Balda (50, na),
      Evotec# (53, 14),
      Pandatel (55, 12),
      RTV (56, 51), Poet Holdings (58, 17),
      NorcCom (60, 20)
[We believe that some of these companies rank high in turnover because they have been listed only since October or November 1999]

The companies most likely to be excluded are:
      artnet.com (148, 124),
      NSE Software (144, 88),
      CineMedia (130, 78),
      Endemann (127, 102),
      Brain International# (120, 85),
      BinTec (118, 70),
      mb Software (114, 39),
      i:Fao (111, 71),
      Cybernet (110, 25),
      Utimaco Safeware(104, 72),
      infor (100, 84),
      Micrologica (98, 49),
      Jumptec (97, 96),
      Pfeiffer Vacuum (94, 77),
      CPU (89, 76)

Prior to the decision Deutsche Börse does not comment on any possible index changes, so it is still too early to present a final list. A lot will depend on a more
strategicly motivated trade-off between index continuity and rendering the index representative of the market as a whole.
So far there is no future on the Nemax50. We expect a future to be launched some time this year. So far Deutsche Börse / Eurex still seem concerned about the liquidity of the product.

      • Looking at market cap and turnover Freenet is clearly a candidate for the Nemax50. However Freenet does not qualify for inclusion as MobilCom, another Nemax50 company, holds more than 75% of Freenet. After talking to Deutsche Börse, we think it now seems likely that Freenet is not going to be included in the Nemax50.
      • Trintech should be among the Nemax50 candidates. Now Deutsche Börse will adjust the number of registered shares for Trintech. That makes Trintech now officially one of the candidates.

      Update

Deutsche Börse Released Ranking Lists for End of January

On 8 February Deutsche Börse will for the first time decide on the
changes to the constituents of the Nemax50, based on end of January
data. The relevant ranking lists have been released yesterday evening.

Based on the criteria Deutsche Börse could replace 18 companies in
the index. It now seems likely to us that Deutsche Börse will exchange at least 10 companies. A company will need a minimum market cap of around Euro 550 m and an estimated average daily turnover of at least Euro 1.25 m to fulfil the Nemax50 criteria.

Regarding the possible candidates there have been some minor
changes to our last list based on 20 January 2000 data.
      Systematics,
      Emprise and
      Gauss Interprise
      are now among the candidates
      ,

      whereas
MWG-Biotech:O, RTV:O and Plaut:O have dropped from the list.

The companies that fulfil the criteria for the Nemax50 (with rank by
market cap as at 20/1/2000 and estimated annualised turnover as at
      30/12/1999) are (in alphabetical order):

      BroadVision (1,17), Balda (48, 19), Constantin Film (30, 42), Direct
      Anlage Bank (19, 4), Dialog Semiconductors (14, 59), Emprise (54, 40),
      Evotec# (44, 7), Gauss (37, 48), Integra (24, 52), NorCom (56, 29),
      Pandatel (47, 21), Parsytec (36, 58), Pixelpark# (10, 8), Poet Holdings (59, 9), ricardo.de# (28, 22), systematics (58, 33), The Fantastic Corp.# (7, 41), Trintech# (17, 43).
