My dear Heimdal, there is absolutely no evidence as of this date that Saddam Hussein has anything to do with Al Qaeda or the attack on the U.S. There is no evidence that SH is producing or developing chemical, biological or nuclear weapons. Yet, we are told that Iraq must be invaded because SH is developing precisely such weapons.
Germany has been America`s faithful unquestioning ally ever since the end of WW2. When America says jump, Germany asks how high? During the Cold War, Germany was the corner stone of the NATO defense in Europe. Without Germany, NATO could not have come into being. Germany has the largest military contingent in both Afghanistan and in the Balkans. Ten years ago it was told by the U.S. to pay for more than one fourth of the costs associated with the Desert Storm war of 1991. Although Germany had not been asked how it felt about the war or whether it would make any contributions, it complied grudgingly.
Now, Germany is once again expected to contribute to a war effort in a major way. It has not been asked how it felt about going to war against Iraq. It has not been asked to participate in the consultations over the war planning, nor does it participate in the UN security council deliberations because it has no seat on the council.
The truth is that Germany is only tolerated as long as it follows Washington`s orders. It has never been recognized by the U.S. for its contributions in the past. Instead, it is still viewed with disdain by most Americans as an untrustworthy evil doer. It is frequently ridiculed in the American media which goes out of its way to keep the memories of the NAZI years alive in the minds of Americans. As a result, most Americans, including the president, have a negative view of Germany. They only read and hear negative things about the country and its people. It is foolhardy for Germans to believe that they are recognized or appreciated for their loyalty to America. Schroeder understands that.
Sadly, almost sixty years after the end of WW2, there is still a discernable breech in the relations of Germany and the victorious allies. This is once again coming to the fore as Tony Blair and Jacques Chirac find it politically expedient to align themselves with the U.S. while pushing for Russia to do the same. Initially, Chirac was opposed to the war as much as Schroeder, but as soon as the chancellor publicly voiced his strong opposition to the war, Chirac saw an opportunity to let Germany hang high and dry, all by itself. Obviously, the "German problem" in Europe is still well and alive.
Gerhard Schroeder seems to have grasped the situation. For him it is time that Germany assert itself and demand an equal place at the geopolitical table of decision makers. He has rightfully concluded that it would be a thankless effort for Germany to participate in this war of aggression, which goes counter to its constitutional principles, and would impose a heavy economic burden on the country. Germans should not loose any sleep over a damaged transatlantic relationship unless they are comfortable with playing the role of a lackey.

Und über die Zuverlässigkeit der Angaben über die irakische Bedrohung:
"This administration is capable of any lie ... in order to advance its war goal in Iraq," says a US government source in Washington with some two decades of experience in intelligence, who would not be further identified. "It is one of the reasons it doesn`t want to have UN weapons inspectors go back in, because they might actually show that the probability of Iraq having [threatening illicit weapons] is much lower than they want us to believe."
