Alexander For Leonardo DiCaprio

In the latest salvo in a war to produce an epic about Macedonian conqueror Alexander the Great, Initial Entertainment Group has paid a mid-seven-figure sum to snap up Peter Buchman and Christopher McQuarrie`s "Alexander" as a vehicle for Leonardo DiCaprio to topline and Martin Scorsese to direct.

The project was originally slated for acquisition by producer Mark Canton and his German backer Senator Entertainment, which announced the purchase late last year. Canton and Senator have since split up.

McQuarrie was originally attached as the script`s director but stepped aside when Scorsese expressed interest in the project.

U.S. sales and production company IEG has snapped up the spec from writers Peter Buchman ("Jurassic Park III") and Oscar winner Christopher McQuarrie ("The Usual Suspects") for a mid-seven-figure sum, billing it as a "multimillion-dollar epic" for Scorsese to direct and DiCaprio to topline, the company said Monday.

The script details the story of Alexander the Great, crowned King of Macedonia after the murder of his father, Philip. The story centers on Alexander`s ambition to conquer the world, which ultimately leads to his downfall.

"Alexander" will be produced by IEG CEO Graham King in association with Buchman, McQuarrie and Kenneth Kokin, as well as DiCaprio`s production company, Appian Way. Scorsese`s production company, Cappa Prods., also will produce, with IEG fully financing and handling worldwide sales for the project. There is no start date set.

The deal, announced during the London Screenings informal film market, stems from IEG`s three-year production agreement with Appian Way (HR 8/6).

DiCaprio and Scorsese are repped by Artists Management Group, McQuarrie and Kokin by ICM and Buchman by UTA. Negotiating on behalf of IEG was chief operating officer Colin Cotter.
