Das heimtückische West-Nil-Virus ist auf dem Vormarsch. Nachdem der Krankheitserreger, der eigentlich in Afrika und Asien heimisch ist, vor drei Jahren erstmals in den USA nachgewiesen worden war, klagt nun auch Europa über erste Fälle.

Im letzten Jahr wurden mehr als 4000 Fälle von West-Nil-Virus-Infektionen bestätigt. Über 300 Menschen starben - Tendenz steigend.

Diese bedenkliche Entwicklung spielt dem australischen Unternehmen PANBIO in die Karten. PANBIO hat sich auf die Entwicklung sogenannter Diagnose-Kits spezialisiert, mit denen sich zahlreiche Infektionskrankheiten wie z.B. das Dengue-Fieber, Keuchhusten oder auch das West-Nil-Virus nachweisen lassen.

Mit der Zulassung des Tests zur Identifikation des Virus ist PANBIO ein Coup gelungen, der dem Unternehmen einen Umsatzsprung einbringt und die Gewinnzone näher rücken lässt, die nun voraussichtlich schon nächstes Jahr erreicht wird.

PANBIO financial update and strengthening of board

Australian-based, international medical diagnostic company, PANBIO Limited, today confirmed its outlook for profitable results in the coming financial year and, although results are not yet final pending audit, disclosed it expects a loss of approximately $3 million for the financial year ended June 30, 2003.

PANBIO CEO, Jim Porter said “The expected loss for the last financial year reflects one-time restructuring costs, the settlement of a claim made against the company in April 2001, and costs associated with the development, clinical trials and launch of the West Nile virus (WNV) diagnostic test in the US.”

He said “the company last week was first to receive US FDA clearance for its WNV diagnostic test, in time for the US summer season. The company is receiving a strong response from the market – in line with revenue projections”.

In addition to the WNV test, the company was also first to develop and commercialise a test for Ross River virus in Australia and first to develop commercial diagnostic kits for dengue fever, a potentially fatal disease that afflicts 100 million people annually in tropical regions of Asia and South America. All three viruses are mosquito-borne diseases.

The company also announced Mr Porter’s elevation to the Board of Directors and plans to appoint two additional independent non-executive directors.

Chairman Mr Ian Sandford said “the board wanted to strengthen its capabilities to support the company`s growth strategy for the next three years and beyond.”

He said “these appointments would bring a new perspective and extend the capabilities of the current board. A search process had been initiated with the objective of appointing at least one of the new directors by calendar year end”.
