U.S. biotech company reports new way of making stem cells without harming embryos
NEW YORK, Aug 23, 2006 (AP Worldstream via COMTEX) -- A U.S. biotechnology company has developed a new way of creating stem cells without destroying human embryos, billing it as a potential solution to a contentious political and ethical debate.
"This will make it far more difficult to oppose this research," said Robert Lanza of Advanced Cell Technology, the Alameda, California, company that reported the new method Wednesday.
Stem cell researchers were impressed by the new technique's ability to produce two robust lines of stem cells without requiring the destruction of embryos, and a White House spokeswoman called it encouraging. However, few on either side believe the new procedure would end the long-running bitter impasse over the science.
Stem cells have become a sort of holy grail for advocates of patients with a wide variety of illnesses because of the cells' potential to transform into any type of human tissue. But the Vatican, U.S. President George W. Bush and others have argued that the promise of stem cells should not be realized at the expense of human life, even in its most nascent stages.
"The science is interesting and important," said John Harris, a professor of bioethics at the University of Manchester in Great Britain, commenting on the biotech company's efforts.
But a representative of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops rejected the method as "gravely unethical."

Shares of stem-cell company quadruple
Advanced Cell said it had found a way to produce cells without destroying embryos.
By Paul Elias
Associated Press
SAN FRANCISCO - Shares of pioneering stem-cell company Advanced Cell Technology Inc. more than quadrupled yesterday after the announcement of a breakthrough by its scientists.
Executives hope its announcement that company scientists have discovered a new way to produce human embryonic stem cells without destroying embryos will persuade a large drugmaker or biotechnology company to invest in the financially struggling company.
Advanced Cell hopes to begin testing a human embryonic stem-cell therapy next year on patients with macular degeneration, an eye disease.
Shares of the company rose 358 percent in heavy over-the-counter trading yesterday closing at $1.83, up $1.43.
However, until yesterday, political uncertainty, a skittish investor community, and the company's near-term outlook had sent Advanced Cell's stock hovering near its lowest point since it first publicly offered its shares in February 2005.
The company clones human embryos not for reproductive purposes, but for extracting stem cells for use in the research of potential therapies. Stem cells are the building blocks of life, and Advanced Cell hopes to use them in new treatments for diseased organs.
Worth billions
Analysts predict such a breakthrough could be worth billions in annual sales, but the field has been politically charged almost since 1997, when University of Wisconsin scientist Jamie Thomson became the first to isolate the cells that create the entire human body. That's because embryos are destroyed during research. Many conservatives, including President Bush, argue that life begins at conception and say the work is immoral.
Advanced Cell's chief executive officer William Caldwell said the political clouds hanging over the work had kept larger, cash-rich companies from investing in Advanced Cell, which employs about 27 workers.
Caldwell hopes the company's ability to now generate human embryonic stem cells without destroying embryos will lure deep-pocketed corporate partners who can help get experimental drugs to market, an expensive proposition. An average of $850 million and 15 years are spent developing a single drug, according to Tufts University drug economists.
"Big Pharma and the big biotechnology companies haven't publicly got involved because of the ethical concerns," Caldwell said. "That's one of the reasons we pursued this research."
Ethical concerns allayed?
Whether the new technique alleviates ethical concerns and is commercially viable are still open questions, analysts said.
"The political overhang isn't holding anyone back," said Ren Benjamin, an analyst with Rodman & Renshaw. "What's holding back alliances is the early stage of the research."
Benjamin and others also said stem-cell products were still at least five years from market. No human embryonic stem-cell-based drugs have been tested on patients.
Investor interest in the sector waned soon after President Bush severely limited federal funding of stem-cell research in August 2001, and Advanced Cell has lurched from one cash crunch to the next. In 2003, ImClone Systems Inc. wrote off a $1 million loan to the company as a bad investment, and Advanced Cell sold its promising animal-cloning business to stay afloat.
The company, which was racing to develop cloned human embryos as a stem-cell source, teetered on the brink of insolvency after South Korean scientist Hwang Woo-suk stunned the scientific world in 2004 with his claim to be the first to clone human embryos. Hwang has since been exposed as a fraud and his work a sham, which helped breathe a new round of venture-capital investment into the company.

Max-Planck-Direktor zweifelt an US-Stammzellerfolg
