Erster ARM-Prozessor für FPGAs

ARM erweitert seine Cortex-Prozessorfamilie um den Cortex-M1, der speziell für die Implementierung in FPGAs entwickelt wurde. Als erster Lizenznehmer bietet Actel seinen FPGA-Kunden diesen Prozessor nun an.
Der 32-Bit-RISC-Prozessor auf der Basis des ARMv6-M-Befehlssatzes ermöglicht nach Angaben von ARM Kostensenkungen bei verschiedensten FPGA?, ASIC? und ASSP-Projekten, da OEMs ihre Investitionen in Software und Tools rationalisieren können. Durch die Verwendung eines Industriestandard-Prozessors kommt noch eine vermehrte Anbieter-Unabhängigkeit hinzu. Der Cortex-M1 wird durch gängige FPGA-Synthese-Anbieter, Softwareentwicklungs-Tools und Echtzeit-Betriebssysteme unterstützt, was FPGA-Designern zu mehr Optionsvielfalt und Flexibilität verhilft.
Laut Gartner Dataquest steht den FPGAs/PLDs eine äußerst vielversprechende Zukunft bevor: Die Analysten erwarten für 2008 die Rückkehr zu einem soliden Wachstum von 15,7% und gehen davon aus, dass der FPGA/PLD-Markt ab 2008 stärker wachsen wird als der Halbleitermarkt insgesamt. ARM will mit dem Cortex-M1 seine Präsenz auf dem FPGA-Sektor weiter ausbauen und somit seinem Ziel, „Prozessorlösungen für die gesamte digitale Welt zu offerieren“, näher kommen.
Actel hat als erster FPGA-Anbieter eine Lizenz für den Cortex-M1 erworben und wird seinen Kunden diesen Prozessor ohne zusätzliche Kosten zur Verfügung stellen. Nach eigenen Angaben gibt der FPGA-optimierte Prozessor den Anwendern der Flash-basierten Fusion Programmable System Chips und der ProASIC3 FPGAs von Actel einen Baustein in die Hand, der den Anforderungen zahlreicher Anwendungen gerecht werde. Actel wird den Cortex-M1 mit der CoreConsole IP Deployment Platform, der Programmentwicklungsumgebung SoftConsole und der integrierten Entwicklungsumgebung Actel Libero unterstützen. Alle diese Lösungen stehen kostenlos zum Download von Actel-Website zur Verfügung.
Tools und Peripherie-Support
Der Cortex-M1 wird von künftigen Versionen der ARM RealView Development Suite und des RealView Microcontroller Development Kit unterstützt. Die Development Suite wird ein komplettes Instruction Set System Model (ISSM) enthalten und Entwicklern die Möglichkeit zum direkten Erstellen und Testen von Applikationen geben. Der Debugger lässt sich dabei individuell anpassen, um die Peripheriefunktionen um den Cortex-M1 herum zu visualisieren und mit ihnen zu interagieren.
Die Partner der ARM Connected Community, zu der CodeSourcery, Express Logic, IAR Systems, Mentor Graphics, Micrium und Synplicity gehören, unterstützen den neuen Core. Im Interesse einer besseren Flow-Integration gibt es für den Cortex-M1 eine IP-Beschreibung gemäß dem IP-XACT-Standard des SPIRIT Consortium.
Der ARM Cortex-M1 ist ein rationalisierter, dreistufiger 32-Bit-RISC-Prozessor, der eine Teilmenge des codekompakten Thumb-2-Befehlssatzes implementiert. Damit lässt sich der Footprint sowohl des Prozessors selbst als auch der Software auf das Flächenbudget selbst kleiner FPGAs abstimmen. Die Aufwärtskompatibilität zum Thumb-Code für beliebige ARM-Prozessoren ab ARM7TDMI bleibt gewahrt.
Wenig Flächenbearf, hohe Taktfrequenz, einfache Anwendung
Der Cortex-M1 kommt auf Taktfrequenzen von über 170 MHz und nimmt dabei weniger als 15% der Fläche verbreiteter Low-Cost-FPGAs ein. Obwohl er der kleinste Prozessor der Cortex-Familie ist, erzielt er eine Leistungsfähigkeit von 0,8 DMIPS/MHz. Zu den typischen Applikationen dieser RISC/FPGA-Lösung zählen Embedded-Control-Anwendungen, Kommunikations? und Netzwerkfunktionen und Luft-/Raumfahrt-Applikationen.
Die Actel-Implementierung des Cortex-M1 wird ohne Lizenzen und entsprechende Gebühren ab April 2007 über Actels Website für die Kunden verfügbar sein. Die Bemusterung der für den Cortex-M1 geeigneten Bausteinfamilien ProASIC3 und Actel Fusion PSC beginnt im dritten Quartal 2007. Die RTL-Beschreibung des Cortex-M1 und die dazugehörigen EDA-Views für die FPGAs verschiedener Anbieter wie Actel, Altera, Lattice und Xilinx, stehen OEMs vom zweiten Quartal 2007 an zur Lizenzierung zur Verfügung.
