China PC maker Legend creates Net company

BEIJING, April 6 (Reuters) - China`s largest personal computer maker Legend Group is splitting into two parts -- a traditional manufacturing company and a newer one that will focus on Internet products, Xinhua news agency said on Thursday.

Legend Group has shares listed through its Hong Kong company Legend Holdings Ltd <0992.HK>.

One of the new companies, whose name was not disclosed, will concentrate on bread-and-butter PC manufacturing.

The other, to be called Legend Shenzhou Digital Co Ltd, will focus exclusively on Internet-based services and e-commerce products, Xinhua said. "This restructuring means the PC giant has begun its march into the increasingly hot fields of the Internet and e-commerce," it said. Yang Yuanqing will head up the PC making side, and Guo Wei will run the Internet business, the article said. The two are in their 30s and have a decade of experience in their respective fields, it said. The article provided no further details.

hier bezüglich der jüngsten Geschäftszahlen ein kurzes Statement
von Goldman Sachs:

HONG KONG (AFX-ASIA) - Legend Holdings shares were higher after Goldman
Sachs upgraded the stock to its Recommended List, dealers said.

At 11:20 am, Legend was up 1.45 hkd or 15.93 pct at 10.55 hkd on trade of
37.02 mln shares.

Goldman Sachs, in a note to clients, said the company`s business momentum
continues to be extremely strong.

It said the company had restructured its operations to give more autonomy
to emerging businesses.

Goldman Sachs said that based on the company`s strong March-quarter
performance, Legend is on track to exceed its previous estimate by 50 pct.

Goldman Sachs said it has raised its March quarter earnings estimate from
88 mln hkd to 135 mln and has raised its year to March 2001 and 2002 earnings
estimates by 24 pct and 37 pct respectively.

The note said Legend shipped 420,000 PCs in the March quarter, up 141 pct
year-on-year.

"March was the first month in which shipments exceeded 200,000 units, and
year-on-year growth was the strongest in the company`s history," the note
said.

Aktien im Fokus: Deutliche Erholung bei den asiatischen Technologiewerten

HONGKONG (dpa-AFX) - Angeführt von dem chinesischen Computerhersteller Legend Holdings Ltd. haben sich die asiatischen Technologiewerte am Donnerstag deutlich von ihren Vortagesverlusten erholt. Am Dienstag sei es nach den massiven Kursschwankungen der amerikanischen Nasdaq bei den asiatischen High-Tech-Aktien zu einer regelrechten Ausverkaufsstimmung gekommen, sagten Händler. Die Panik habe sich nun gelegt, die ersten Schnäppchenjäger seien aktiv geworden. Hikari Tsushin International , das Hongkonger Investmentvehikel der japanischen Hikari Tsushin , hat gegen 16.00 Uhr Ortszeit 17,58% auf 5,35 HKD zugelegt. Next Media , die Internetgesellschaft des Pressemagnaten Jimmy Lai kletterten um 25,00% auf 2,15 HKD. China Telecom gewannen 2,55% auf 62,75 HKD. Legend Holdings zogen 19,55% auf 10,70 HKD. Pacific Century Cyberworks gewannen 4,68% auf 15,65 HKD. Der Hang Seng-Index gewann gleichzeitig 1,06% auf 16.491,39 Punkte. Insgesamt lieferten die steigenden Kurse noch keinen Hinweis auf eine generelle Trendwende, sagte Kitty Chan von dem Hongkonger Brokerhaus APC Securities zu den Kursgewinnen bei der Internetholding Pacific Century Cyberworks. die Neuigkeiten werden die Zahlen fürs erste Quartal (???), jedenfalls werden es Geschäftszahlen sein, die positiv ausgefallen sein sollne. Desweiteren wirken immer noch die beschlossenen Umstrukturierungsmaßnahmen weiter auf den Kurs ein. News sollen angeblich um 09:30 unserer Zeit bekannt gegeben werden (ohne Gewähr).

J.M. hatte vor einiger Zeit von ca. 22:15 - 23:00 Uhr im Deutschlandstudio von N-TV ein Interview gegeben.
Ich hatte damals schon darauf hingewiesen und Folgendes in Frage gestellt:
Wie schafft man das, von ca. 23:00 Uhr aus Deutschland bis ca. 06:00 nach Hongkong zu kommen um einen Thread zu eröffnen mit den Worten "Guten Morgen aus HK nach Deutschland" ... ?????

Hab leider nie eine Antwort von J.M. erhalten - hat sich wahrscheinlich ein bisschen auf den Schlips getreten gefühlt....

Legend has recognised the impact of internet usage on its hardware sales ¡V 50,000 Internet-enabled Conet PC`s were sold 1Q00 out of a total 420,000 PC`s sold ¡V and is using its installed customer base of some 4m users to develop e-commerce services. The Group plans to become a major mainland Chinese e-commerce player. Longer-term, this market could provide the earnings growth going forward as downward pressure on PC prices strengthens over time.

The company visit also gave us a better picture about Legend`s Internet business development. Legend has recently announced three co-operations with international companies;-
Formed a joint venture with D-Link (Legend: 53%, D-Link: 47%) to produce networking products in China.

Co-operation with PCCW to produce Legend-NOW PC with one-touch access to NOW portal.

Co-operation with NDS to produce set-top boxes for digital TVs.
Apart from the hardware manufacturing, Legend is focusing on e-commerce business as a new development direction. It was reported that it planned to invest RMB700m in its Legend portal (www.fm365.com).

Legend just released its 1Q00 PC sales, with 420,000 PCs sold, making full year sales of 1.46m PCs, slightly above our forecast of 1.4m PCs (we revised up from 1.3m following the 3Q results). Legend reported a 27% PC market share earlier this year and we expect the share to approach 30% by the end of March. We also anticipate the Legend PC sales to reach at least 2.0m PCs in FY01 and estimate that Conet PC will account for 20% of total Legend PC sales.

The JV with D-Link; Legend holds 53% of the JV, with a registered capital of US$10m. The management is targeting a 10% market share in the networking product market in China. As of 3Q99, the market share of D-Link is 8% and that of Legend is 1%. JV sales are expected to be US$60m this year and up to US$250m in 2003.

The digital set-top box is used in ordinary TV sets to receive digital TV signals. The development of Internet access technology in China is still very early, uncertain and evolving quickly. Although cable seems certain to play at least some part, interactive video, which requires 2-qway broadband ¡V will probably not be possible in most cities for several years owing to the cable reconstruction and capital investment required. For this reason, Legend`s manufacturing project is in its initial stage, and the launch date has yet to be decided, pending the schedule of broadcasting digital TV signals in China. We do not expect a significant contribution in FY01.

Legend will team up with PCCW (1186.HK) to provide broadband multi-media services in the mainland market. The alliance, to be named Legend-NOW, will bundle PCCW`s multimedia Network of the World (¡§NOW¡¨) in Legend PCs, so that buyers of Legend PCs will immediately access NOW`s website online via a telephone connection arranged by China Telecom. More details are expected to be announced soon.

We see longer-term fast growth coming from Legend`s e-commerce and Internet activities, following the launch of the Internet Legend PC ("Conet PC) and its own portal (www.fm365.com). Legend will acquire significant and growing value once it enters the Internet service industry.

Conclusion

Our valuation for Legend consists of two parts. The first part is for its core hardware businesses, based on the valuation of 3.0x PER/growth ratio (48% CAGR for FY00-01 and 144x FY01 PER). This is re-rated from 2.0x PERG due to the faster take-up rate of Conet PC which commends higher gross margin of 20% compared to 13% for Legend ordinary PC). A premium is also justified for its fast growing market share in the boom PC market in China (IDC estimates that the China PC market will be growing at a CAGR of over 25% in the coming five years), while its rivals` shares are either steady or declining. This part will translate to HK$12.50 per share.

The second part is the hidden value for its Internet & e-commerce development. We estimate the Internet value to be HK$4.30 per share, based on the projected EV/sub of US$8,000 (a premium over cable & mobile subscriber) for Legend`s estimated 500,000 Internet subscribers by the end of FY01. We therefore reiterate our BUY recommendation, with our revised 12-month price target of 16.80.

HONG KONG, April 7 (Reuters) - Shares in personal computer maker Legend Holdings Ltd soared on Friday morning on expectations of good 2000 results and market approval of the company`s restructuring plans, brokers said.
Legend leaped to a morning high of HK$13.10 then eased late in the session to trade at HK$12.55, up HK$1.95 or 18.4 percent on heavy turnover of HK$632 million.

"The market is saying that the company`s first quarter sales are beyond expectations and that they also managed to achieve fatter margins," said Jason Ho, sales trader at BNP Prime Peregrine Securities. The share was the most actively traded issue in the morning session, and led the rebound in quality red chip technology stocks, Ho said.

The company, whose financial year ends on March 31, will be reporting its full year results at the end of May, assistant manager Jenny Lee told Reuters.

She would not comment on the sales results for the first three months of 2000.

The company on Wednesday announced a group restructuring that split the company into two distinct entities, allowing "the subsidiaries` management more autonomy and flexibility to respond more quickly to the market", Lee said.

Legend, China`s largest maker of personal computers, planned to split the company into two divisions, one concentrating on PC manufacturing and the other focused on Internet-related services and e-commerce products.

The company had no plans at present to seek a separate listing for the e-services side, Lee said.

The share has been especially volatile in recent weeks.

It was boosted to a record high early in March following news of a stock split of one-into-four, and the announcment of a strategic alliance with high-flying Internet and media services firm Pacific Century CyberWorks (1186.HK: news) .
