Chile Senate advances talks over mining royalty bill
Zitat von Oginvest: Chile’s Senate on Tuesday pushed forward discussion over a controversial bill to increase royalty payments from mining companies that operate in the world’s largest copper producer, a legislation being backed by opposition lawmakers.

The Senate approved by 18 votes in favor, versus 16 against, to continue making modifications to the bill, which was previously passed by the lower Chamber of Deputies in May.

“I am voting in favor of the royalty bill and I have no doubt that in the weeks that remain where we are going to set the deadline for the presentation of amendments to improve this bill,” said center-left senator Yasna Provoste.

The mining industry has strongly opposed the idea of raising the tax burden, arguing it is already at its limit, and has said the bill could push some firms out of business.

Deputies of some parties on the opposition left have proposed increasing the levy to boost tax collection, which they say is key to funding more social initiatives as the Andean country rebounds from the coronavirus pandemic.

The discussion come with the global price of the red metal near decade-long highs.

Chile’s copper sector is dominated by state mining giant Codelco, along with multinational firms such as BHP, Anglo American, Glencore, Antofagasta and Freeport.

Zitat von Oginvest: NEW YORK – Mining company Vale believes iron-ore prices will increase after the Winter Olympics in China scheduled for February as Beijing is likely to allow more steel producers to regain production capacity.

China's government has been asking plants in several sectors, including steel, to reduce production to cut air pollution before the sporting event.

Vale's VP for Strategy and Business Transformation Luciano Siani told reporters after a meeting with investors at the New York Stock Exchange on Monday that he expects industrial activity in China to grow once the Games are over, boosting iron-ore prices.

Siani, however, does not see a large price gain, saying the tonne of steel's raw material is likely to stay between $90 and $120 or $130.

Spot prices of iron ore with 62% iron content for delivery to China, compiled by SteelHome consultancy, rose $3 to $105 a tonne on Monday.

Prices had been falling heavily from a peak of above $230/tonne in May.

Siani also talked about the future of some business units at the company, such as coal and base metals.

He said that discussions about the sale of the coal business are progressing and that an announcement is likely around the beginning of 2022.

About the base metals unit, the executive said the company is working to make it more independent from the rest of the company, so Vale could have the option to sell it if it decides for that path.

But Siani said a decision regarding base metals will not come before 2023.

London's FTSE 100 flat as losses in miners overshadow Shell cheer

Reuters) - UK's FTSE 100 was flat on Monday, as gains in oil major Royal Dutch Shell on plans to ditch its dual share structure were offset by subdued miners hit by global moves to reduce coal use and a big drop in China's steel production.

The blue-chip FTSE 100 was unchanged at 0817 GMT, with miners Anglo American, Glencore and BHP Group down between 0.7% and 1.2%, after U.N. climate talks ended Saturday with a deal that for the first time targeted fossil fuels as the key driver of global warming.

Data also showed crude steel output in China, the world's top producer of the metal, fell for the fifth straight month in October amid curbs.

On the bright side, Shell gained 1.8% after the energy giant said it will scrap its dual share system in favour of a single class of shares to boost shareholder payouts and simplify its structure.

BT Group gained 1.8% after Reuters reported citing sources that telecoms tycoon Patrick Drahi is looking to increase his stake in the British company, betting its fibre-optic rollout will boost value.

Cineworld jumped 5.6% after reporting an improvement in October box office revenue as COVID-19 restrictions eased.

Russia's Alrosa posts profit jump on recovering diamond demand

MOSCOW (Reuters) - State-controlled Russian diamond producer Alrosa on Thursday said recovering sales helped it to more than triple third-quarter net profit to 25 billion roubles ($354 million).

The world's largest producer of rough diamonds, which competes with Anglo American unit De Beers, is gradually restoring output after last year's 22% reduction to 30 million carats when global diamond sales were hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Demand for diamond jewellery grew in double-digit percentages in the third quarter, said finance chief Alexey Philippovskiy, adding that global diamond output would remain 20–25% below the pre-pandemic levels in the coming years.

Alrosa's third-quarter sales rose by 83% year on year to 9.2 million carats of diamonds.

The company also said it raised its 2021 production estimate by 1 million carats to 32.5 million carats and kept its capital expenditure forecast unchanged at 21 billion roubles.

De Beers tightens full-year output guidance at 32m carats

Diamond miner De Beers expects to produce about 32-million carats for the full-year, which is at the lower end of its initial guidance of 32-million to 33-million carats.

Reporting on its production performance in the third quarter ended September 30, the Anglo American subsidiary said demand for rough diamonds remained robust.

Positive midstream sentiment also reflected strong demand for polished diamond jewellery, particularly in the key markets of the US and China.

      Diamonds, iron-ore drive 2% rise in Anglo American's third-quarter output ¨

Diversified miner Anglo American achieved a 2% increase in production for the third quarter, ended September 30, which CEO Mark Cutifani largely attributed to planned higher rough diamond production at its De Beers subsidiary, as well as increased production from the Minas-Rio iron-ore project, in Brazil, and improved plant performance at Kumba Iron Ore's operations, in South Africa.
