Chile SQM Operations Partially Disrupted, Some Product Loss On Quake
By Anthony Esposito
Dow Jones Newswires SANTIAGO -(Dow Jones)- The powerful earthquake and ensuing tsunamis that struck the central-south of Chile late last month disrupted part of Chilean fertilizer and speciality chemical producer Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile SA's (SQM, SQM-B.SN) operations and damaged a portion of its stored products, the company said in a statement.
The natural disaster devastated large portions of central-south Chile, and according to government estimates, total damages could reach $30 billion.
SQM estimates that it lost no more than 30% of 27,000 metric tons in products it had stored at warehouses at the Penco port in the Bio Bio region, when these were slammed by tsunamis. The company said it, along with an insurer, will take some 40 days to evaluate total losses at the warehouse, adding that the insurance policy will cover damages and lost product.
The Penco port is still not fully operational, as only ground transportation is running normally, so SQM is using a neighboring port to unload some ships, according to the company.
Most of SQM's operations and facilities were undamaged, as they are located in the nation's first and second regions, some 1,600 kilometers north of the epicenter. SQM's operations at the central San Antonio and southern Puerto Montt ports and warehouses are running normal, the company said.
Considering most of SQM's installation didn't feel the effects of the quake or tsunamis, analysts don't expect its share price to react unfavorably to the news.
SQM's more liquid B-series shares gained 0.2% to 20,100.00 Chilean pesos ($37.63) in late morning trading, as the blue-chip Ipsa index was also up 0.2%.
