Google might not realize it, but Project Glass isn't alone in the patent race these days. Sony has quietly applied for a patent on a familiar-looking smart glasses system whose advantage over Mountain View would be an emphasis on things in twos. Eyepieces are the most obvious, but Sony is also keen on sharing data between two friends: transmitters on a pair of glasses would send personal info through a likely very uncomfortable glance at someone else with the same eyewear. If your friends are more than a little weirded out from sharing by staring, the proposed glasses could still pick up information from visual tags on posters, products and virtually anything else. There's even the obligatory connection to a watch for sharing data with the rest of the world. Whether or not the patent leads to Sony head-mounted technology more advanced than a personal 3D TV is still up in the air, especially with Google currently hogging the spotlight... not that existing, more conservative designs have ever stopped Sony from rolling out wild concepts before."

"Augmented Reality combat technology, similar to what is seen in numerous combat games like Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter & Future Soldier, that feeds soldiers with real-time Intel form UAV’s, sattelits and other solderers is not far from being a reality.

Display technology firm Vuzix have created a number of previous versions of its augmented reality glasses for military uses that are already used by the US army and special-forces. But these models use a single-eye non-transparent lens to watch drone surveillance footage in real time on the ground.

Vuzix have a new prototype which at the moment is a single lens rigged to a tiny portable projector the video image takes up around a quarter of the entire lens and appears to hover around 10 centimetres in front of your face, making it is easy to see your surroundings at the same time as viewing images and data being displayed on the lens.

The lens uses optical waveguide technology to display the images. Light from the projector enters the side of the lens and is split into vertical and horizontal components that pass through tiny optical channels in the glass before being reconstructed in the opposite corner.

Vuzix will be going had to head with Google, the search giant announced in April its planes to manufacter AR glasses. Vuzix hopes to get a jump on Google and plans to release a single-eye version of its new transparent lens for military and industrial applications, with full consumer glasses to follow next year.

Although it is still to been seen what these augmented reality glasses will be capable of I have high hopes and can not see why smartphone style apps could be a possibility."

Carmack erfindet die Ego-Shooter neu

Er hat eine Tür geöffnet, die in die Zukunft der Videospiele führt. Mal wieder. Mit seinen 40 Jahren ist John Carmack einer der Veteranen der Branche. Er ist mit seinem Studio Id Software dafür verantwortlich, dass Ego-Shooter eines der führenden Genres der Spielewelt geworden sind. Er hat "Doom" und "Quake" programmiert und so die 3-D-Darstellung von Spielen groß gemacht. Sein letztes Spiel war "Rage", im Herbst wird "Doom BFG-Edition" erscheinen, eine überarbeitete und an Spielekonsolen angepasste Version der drei bisher erschienenen "Doom"-Teile. Im Zuge der Restaurierungsarbeiten an den Klassikern ist etwas anderes entstanden: eine Virtual-Reality-Brille, die tatsächlich funktioniert ( wow diva). Auch wenn Carmack hier nur einen Prototyp zeigt, von dem er nicht weiß, ob er jemals Serienreife erlangen wird.

"Nachdem ich 'Rage' fertig gestellt hatte, wollte ich mich mal wieder einfach mit Technik beschäftigen," sagt Carmack. "Mich hat interessiert, wie sich die Virtual-Reality-Brillen seit den neunziger Jahren verändert haben." Gar nicht, wie er zu seinem Entsetzen feststellte ( upps - wo hat nachgeschaut?? diva ).

dann sollte er vielleicht mal aus seiner spielewelt auftauchen .... die welt hat sich weiter gedreht ...
