"Government mulling on new policies to aid automobile industry in China
      By Carmen Lee From Gasgoo.comMay 29, 2012
Gasgoo.com (Shanghai May 29) - The Chinese government is currently working on introducing new policies aimed at stimulating growth in the automobile industry. According to a report appearing on Gasgoo.com (Chinese) today, these include new 'old for new' and 'down to the countryside' policies.

The government has taken particular notice of the worsening state of the economy, and particularly the automobile industry, over the last year. In order to prevent actual decline from occuring, it is currently considering introducing policies to encourage long-term growth. According to informed sources, the 'old for new' and 'down to the countryside' policies will primarily target low emission vehicles, with the goal of improving environmental consciousness in the country. They will both adhere to their respective 2009 standards. The latter policy, which was drawn up to improve traffic conditions in villages, will give farmers a ten percent economy subsidy, allowing them to save up to 5,000 yuan ($790.47) on new purchases.

Other policies to increase production and consumption of new energy vehicles have also been drawn up. The government hopes to use them to promote further developments in technology research and development, as well as make new energy vehicles more attractive to consumers. The government has already set aside 36.3 billion yuan ($5.74b) in subsidies for energy-saving electronic products, which includes new energy vehicles. The investment is hoped to increase consumer demand by up to 450 billion yuan ($71.14b).

Following the announcement, stock prices for Changan, Sinotruck and other domestic manufacturers all rose rapidly."

"The Chinese market for mid size sedans is strong and always has been. Mid size bland mobiles have been the driving force behind China’s car industry since VW arrived in the mid 80’s and decided it was going to build the Santana in China, from then on it was sedan mania. Initially it was government use that drove the demand for mid size vehicles, but later business users and then personal users hooked up on mid size drugs. Later, lifestyle vehicles such as SUV’s or MPV’s, chipped away at the sedans success and became dominant players in their own right.

Who are buying mid size sedans in China? The biggest buyers are still government, business, and those personal users that wish to have a ‘dual use’ vehicle, different from a business user that would have a driver that collects them every morning and prefer to use their car for family outings at the weekend. Traditionally, these buyers are a traditional bunch, they know what shape they like – a three box design, they know what color to buy (black), they want the engine to be sub 2.0L but want the cars body to be as big and powerful looking as possible (Hence the last generation Buick Regal coming in 2.0L 4 Cylinder with a manual despite the car being a giant road beast). Business and government users are the most likely to buy the biggest bodied cars with the smallest engines, they want the most bang for their govt/company dollar and as they have a driver to do the gear moving capabilities in rush hour traffic whilst they linger in the back seats, a personal user is the exact opposite, he/she will probably want something with an automatic and a decent sized engine, likely a 2.0-2.4L. V6 power is now yesterdays news since fuel went north of 5RMB a liter.

With VW’s early entry into the Chinese market it got an excellent idea as to what Chinese consumers at government, business, and personal level wanted in their mid size vehicles, the Japanese got there too, the American’s floundered but eventually used their European offerings and the Koreans are starting to figure things out – the Chinese remain hopelessly lost in their own segment.

Is it a branding issue? Do consumers that are generally depositing north of 180,000RMB care about the brand of their car? Yes, likely even more so than those spending less than those 100,000RMB on a basic small car, hence Chery, Geely and especially Hawtai are gaining little traction in such a brand orientated segment. In China, as elsewhere, the further you go up the automotive pricing ladder the less likely you are to see Chinese and Korean mid size cars, once you pass 700,000RMB for a sedan you are in German and British automotive territory.

Not all cars are born equal in the above chart, they entered the markets at different times with the Malibu being one of the newest, most were launched in 2012 or the last quarter of 2011, the Roewe 750 was of course launched way back in 2006, the MG7 shortly afterwards in early ’07, the EC8 in late 2011, the Accord in 2010, the Teana in 2009. Some will note that BMW’s 3-Series is not listed, that’s because all 3-Series models are imported from Germany, as the Brilliance-BMW factory is being refitted for an expansion ahead of the introduction of the new 3-Series and other models (the first batch of new 3-Series sold in China are also expected to be imports as well).

The Kia K5 is arguably the best looking car on the list if you did a price:looks ratio, the equivlant Hyundai isn’t far behind, but looks don’t sell in China, branding does. Chinese consumers are very outwardly focused, they care what people around them think of them, what better way to say you are well endowed in the wallet department than buying a safe choice of a VW or Audi? The top 5 models on the list have been on the Chinese favorite lists for almost half a decade, and it doesn’t look like a situation that is going to change any time soon. Some people may appreciate that Kia and Hyundai are a brand that are certainly going places, but until they have actually arrived at the desirable stage, Chinese mid size consumers won’t be trading their Passat, Camry or Accord’s in for anything Korean, or Chinese any time soon.

Hawtai’s B11 is a cause for concern, the introduction of the sedan was for Hawtai going to be a watershed movement as they transitioned from being primarily an SUV manufacturer into a true passenger car maker, instead it seems the plan has backfired despite the millions Hawtai must have put into developing advertising campaigns across China to highlight the B11′s thrifty diesel economy and powerful turbo gasoline engines. The BYD G6 has come out as a winning model for BYD especially after the early success of F3 which drove the company’s fortunes, and also dragged them down when quality issues came to light. Hopefully Chinese models such as the G6, which seem to be following the Korean model of offering high value for little money will ramp up the charts relatively quickly."

      Textauszug vom 29.05.
